Great fix. That chewing gum type material appears to be polyurethane sealant. I might be wrong here, but it looks similar.

I'm shocked to see that untightened screw on your dashboard panel, glad you found out the issue and fixed it. It is quite frustrating to hear squeaks on a brand new car, that too this being your first car on your own earnings. Another satisfying DIY for you and more knowledge for us.

PS: Feel free to ask any doubt. The issue is fixable completely, so there is nothing to worry.
Shashi, Very Happy to hear that you were able to fix this

Someone with your passion and eye for detail has been able to fix this, but I can only imagine the plight of a regular customer who will possibly get frustrated and eventually give in to it and try to drown the squeaks by keeping the speaker volume up

It is so disheartening to see the entire dashboard practically needing to be ripped open to fix this issue in a brand new car

The guard is holding up better than expected. I've also planned to refine the front arrangement when I go next month to get the cracked right part replaced. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately I have lost seller's number or bank account details. I have some unused rolls lying somewhere and will try to get contact details from there. Worst case- I'll help all needy BHPians with the stuff. So relax.

Took the XL6 on a longish Ranchi-Ramgarh-Ranchi trip(~140kms) and chose the scenic Patratu route. I was eager to know if anything else rattles. Happy to report that everything feels tight now, even when I jumped some horribly designed speed breakers. That rubber butyl has successfully damped all loose clips.

I cannot express how happy I am, that mild creak was driving me nuts from day 1. To be honest, this is the first time I drove without worrying about any rattle.

Took some pics on the way back.

Tried replacing the rear number plate lamps with led's from osram, the caps just won't close. Checked the stock halogen glass bulb and led, the led's are taller by an 'mm'. Tried a lot but did not work gave up frustrated. On the contrary I could open the caps without much fuss it was easy with just a twist.

While the LEDs might be taller(haven't checked), they sit well inside the lens/cap without any issue. Please see if the LED has gone completely inside the socket. Mine sat without any issue.

Great review - very, very detailed and comprehensive! Congratulations on your new XL6, Leoshashi, and wish you many, many, many happy miles and smiles with the car.

You do go to great lengths to keep your cars in top shape! Delighted to see that beautifully maintained 5-speed 12-valve M800 giving company to your new car. We had a blue 5-speed pocket rocket from 2001 to 2009 and I had a great time driving it. It's one rare car where you can actually max out the speedometer!

Just curious - why are the front struts on the XL6 different from those on the Ertiga?

Thanks Sashi, I was a bit hesitant to apply a bit pressure to seat the bulbs, also the accessibility is quite tight to maneuver with two fingers. However mission accomplished and here is a picture to demonstrate the result.

Quick question regarding the Butyl tapes, you said it will disintegrate and take the shape it needs. However if there is a need to pull out the panel in future, will it come out clean or it will break the clips?

Thanks again for your continuous support

Cheers!

Would love to see a pic of your erstwhile pocket rocket, if available.

I agree.

May be due to the increased weight. While the part number of the entire strut is different, its only the spring which is different in the XL6. Whatever reason it is, the front feels a bit tighter than the Ertiga. This is evident if you drive both back to back.

Congratulations! Looks cool now.

No, it will come out cleanly without damaging anything. The individual clips may appear messy initially, but it won't take you more than 5 seconds to clean a clip. It's that easy. Remember those chewing gums we used to love in our childhood, its exactly like that. And it doesn't harden either with time.

Shashi

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

When my XL6 was plagued with the dashboard creaks, I used to think if I made a mistake of not going with the popular Innova. A quick discussion with friends made me realise that whether its the Honda City or Jeep Compass, some kind of squeak or rattle is there in any modern car except the VWs, thanks to the heavy use of clips. That was heartening.

A close friend had booked a new Innova and I got to experience it closely. What thoroughly disappointed me was that the front seat travel was extremely limited and that I felt extremely weird even after pushing the driver seat all the way back. Just for the record, I find my ideal driving position in the XL6 at the middle of the seat range. I believe this is what makes the 2nd row of the Innova extremely spacious.

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_182537.jpg

-Also the width of the cabin from driver seat felt lower than the XL6. May be due to the dash design since top of XL6's dash is completely flat.

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_183041.jpg

-In terms of ambience, the top of the line Innova feels much richer. Seat comfort felt similar though. Ingress is easier on the XL6.

-A quick size comparo of Crysta with the XL6. XL6's face already feels Toyota-ish and should be fairly simple to induct in Toyota's lineup :

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_183145.jpg

Cabin size is more or less similar. Crysta is longer due to the larger engine bay as its evident here:

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_183156.jpg

XL6 feels almost similar to the Older Innova in size:

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_183326.jpg

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200929_183344.jpg

In short, Innova Crysta should have never featured in my shortlist, because I couldn't feel comfortable at the wheel itself. Other things remain immaterial. We own older Innova and I never felt this discomfort on driver seat, so its new model specific I believe.

Update on the rattle/creak: Everything is silent now, Touchwood!

Regards,
Shashi

A close friend has an Ertiga ZDI+ and follows your thread. He's quite enchanted by your license plate LEDs and wants to know the product number, where you got them, and for how much, if possible. Thanks.

Dealership workshop is offering anti rust underbody coating of wurth and MGA. Both are offered at price of Rs. 2000. Which is better??. I saw that you have used MGA anti rust.
