Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Bad day for the XL6, and first dent: This chap was carrying a load on his shoulder, and was carelessly crossing the road and suddenly came in my way. I did manage to brake in time, but there was a WagonR which was tailgating me too closely and ended up crashing into me. The cladding did take a lot of brunt but the hood of WagonR touched my hatch and dented it.

The WagonR owner is a nice chap and was apologetic about the incident. He has promised to pay for whatever loss I incur.

Now options for me,

1. Try PDR. Mr. Mitra who does PDR opines that it can be done. There is just a single dot where paint loss is there.

2. Try conventional denting and painting. My Old mass said it can be done in around Rs. 2,500-3,000.

3. Claim insurance, get bumper, hatch etc replaced. But workshop guys are recommending to get this repaired from my own pocket and not claim insurance for this.

Which one would you guys recommend?

As for WagonR, initially it appeared as if it hardly sustained any damage. I could only see minor coolant drip. But the owner called me just now and said he will need to get following parts replaced and workshop has given him an estimate of ~30-35k with paint:

-Bonnet
-Grill
-Front Members
-Lower Grill
-Headlight
-Bumper
-One AC pipe
-Condenser
-Radiator
-Radiator shroud(fan was touching the gearbox and was unable to move)

Notice how much Headlight is protruding from bumper, the bumper was pushed almost 2 inches behind

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20210403_154937.jpg

Could spot lots of parts cracked and pushed behind in his engine bay:

Please advise what I should do.

Regards,
Shashi

Go for option one and if not satisfied, settle for the two. Well it's sad that the XL got damaged, it's good that no one involved in the incident got hurt.

Sad to read this. I'd go for option 2, don't opt for insurance claims unless your claim amount is much more than NCB. Mostly applicable to new cars where premium is high. Remember the clock is reset to 0 every time you make a claim on your policy.

Best option of all? Claim TP damage from the owner of the WagonR. That way your insurance record remains unblemished. As for the Waggy, the owner can get his claim along with yours.

I suggest go for PDR. Factory paint cannot be reproduced in dealership paint booths. It is better to live with a small area of chipped factory paint than a complete repaint. Maybe you can order a com paint kit to DIY touch up for the small area where paint is removed after the PDR process is done.

Indeed a sad day. It hurts to see a loved car getting dented.

Please do not go for this option. It can have various issues like paint mismatch, malalignment of boot door and malaligned rear glass fitment. Better to live with a small dent and a small chipped paint than to live with these issues. I've been through it, I'll suggest option 1 or 2 as per your convenience.

I have seen your DIYs, proper job is what is expected. PDR is a hackjob, don't do it.

Get it properly repaired and by the looks of it , can be brought back to new finish without much hassle, pay out of pocket and close the chapter. Car should go in and out of the service center within the day, and don't replace any bits unless they are beyond repair because factory finish is something we don't get outside.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

My advice: Option 2. Not much of monetary damage and perfect outcome is almost guaranteed. Negative- you lose original paint and knowing you, it may be a dealbreaker for you. But most of people including me would go for a proper denting + painting job at MASS. The cost is really reasonable and should be borne from pocket rather than claiming insurance.

Don't do PDR Sashi! Since MASS isn't quoting a prohibitive amount - get a proper paint job done.

I have done dent removal on the rear right door of the Punto once, which looked perfect for short term - but over the longer term - the paint shade over it started looking a bit faded and while washing the car I can definitely feel only that area flexing like my Hyundai. All of these sound silly, but if I noticed these - someone with your attention to detail will hate it later.

Just get a proper work done once and for all.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Thanks everyone for your timely suggestions. Have decided to try PDR first since Mr. Mitra is sure he can fix it to perfection. Second option is getting it fixed at MASS without insurance if PDR fails.

Some closeup pics I took just now:

Cladding has taken a real hit and helped negate a lot of damage.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Dear Leoshashi, it looks bad but it can be repaired easily. Hope it will come back to its full glory soon.

My brother’s Brezza was hit by a truck in 2018-19 while they were stopped in a traffic jam. Somehow the truck driver lost control of the stationary truck and the truck rammed into the Brezza with considerable force, denting the boot and breaking the left tail light. It was fixed by repairing.

Few weeks back, one moron taxi driver has ripped open the bumper. Maruti has a 2 part bumper and the replacement is quoted at 8-9k with painting.

We intend to repair it as one guy is confident that he can fix the bumper reasonably well for much lower price.

Dear Shashi, I would suggest to go for insurance claim. Get the repairs properly done at MASS.

After all, that is the purpose of insurance. If one knows what is going to happen in future, it may be fine not to make a claim now and hope world is that way. But, if there is further damage down the line, what should one do?

Hope you understand what I am trying to suggest

Shashi, get a louder horn. Something which can alert fools like this.

I have 2 horns in my SUV, the meek one is for inside city, the megasonics are for the highway. Can't think of driving on the highway without them.

Update: Managed to fix the sharp depression on the bumper, heated slightly using heat gun and pushed it from behind using a long screw driver.

I'll leave it at this. Regarding hatch, I have decided to go for denting and painting. There is already some paint loss and crack. Also since the damage is along crease and with some very sharp projections, there is a good chance that PDR may fail. Not going for insurance claim/hatch replacement option since that will uselessly mess up with the panel gaps and windscreen fit and finish. Denter himself recommended not going for it since it will never be 100% aligned, like how it is now.

Will give the car tomorrow morning for denting. Denter has said he will need an hour max. Since the car is ceramic coated, have asked the painter to wet sand a layer of top coat first before any kind of respray. Also since the hatch is divided into many sections, we will need to respray only the bottom part. Hope to get the car back by tomorrow evening or Tuesday morning.

Regards,
Shashi

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Update: Got the 3rd Free/10k service done on 2nd April. Booked home service via MS Rewards app and also requested Workshop GM of Hilltop Motors Ranchi, Mr. Rajiv Chakraborty to source 0W16 Shell oil for me. They usually stock Idemitsu, but he was kind enough to arrange that for me. I had also requested him to make sure they come with 16510M68K00 filter and not 16510M68K10 which is often used interchangeably by mechanics.

On 2nd Morning, I got a call from their mechanic that they are outside my house. They quickly drained the oil and allowed it to drip completely while they used that time to clean all filters and check other things. I provided them my torque wrenches and they were more than happy to use it. Total service was done in less than 30 minutes and they were on their way back after collecting service coupons for me.

Once they were gone, I jacked up the car and performed 5 wheel rotation myself. Again, torqued the wheels to 100Nm as per specs. Noticed a chip on the tread of one of the tyres and pinged DBHPian NikhilB for his advice. He assured it's good to go. Still as per norms of 5 wheel rotation, that tyre went to rear left.

Total Bill was Rs. 1,777 which included Engine oil(Rs. 1575), Oil Filter(Rs. 85), 4 Sachets of Screenwash(Rs. 68) and Drain bolt and washer(Rs. 42+7). They sent me a pic of the bill later along with payment link and everything went smoothly.
