Hi, Catalyst_delhi for acquiring new XL6. It looks definitely much better now, with the smart alteration of rear lights and slight uptick in its stance. It surely seems to be a substantial upgrade, with the addition of features as well as improvement of the suspension system.
While the review clearly reveals that the engine in this version of XL6 though has better fuel efficiency but it has lost its verve and become rather boring to drive. I would like to hear your opinion on this, in real world driving conditions
thanks.

I can absolutely vouch for the mileage factor. The engine is pretty refined and silent. Coming to the performance part, it has more than ample power to potter about town on 4th or 5th. Cruising at 100 - 120 kmph is not an issue and feels pretty confident and planted. If you are looking for outright performance, this wont be the engine for you. So far i have not faced any issues w.r.t pulling power or overtakes.

Would have loved to meet you too. We stayed at Pune for 3 days, wasn't a mere stop over.

Not sure if I mis-understood it - you drove down from Indore to Pune and then visited Shani Shingnapur on your return leg?
Yes Shani Shingnapur was done during the return leg.

I'm not sure if it's open for public, Although the Shelu Bazar-Nagpur stretch is now complete.

I am sure this would have been a fantastic trip. Did you feel the difference after the upgraded suspension?

Thanks

Yes the suspension swap did wonders to the comfort and high speed stability. Gone is the high speed up-down motion and it now rides flat. There is a bit of firmness to the overall demeanor but the improvement is immense.

I need to get the UV cut upgrade done soon, because that's one thing which troubled us the most in this trip. Also retractable sunshades from factory would have been a blessing.

Update: Since the car had done 5.4k km since last service/oil change, I changed the oil myself at home(sticking to 5k change intervals). Also cleaned the air filter and the entire engine bay.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Hi Shashi, great to know that the Suspension update has helped in controlling the up-down motion during highway runs.
I have one query though, how are you able to get such good fuel economy? I own a 2020 XL6 and I am hardly getting anything above 13kmpl on highway drives and 10-11kmpl in city. I had an Ertiga (diesel) before this and me & my dad both have changed our driving style to be more gentle on the throttle compared to what we were used to with the diesel but still not getting any significant improvement in mileage.

-Accelerating hard, reaching the desired speeds and then feathering the throttle to maintain speed, is what helps me on highway.

-Cruise control till 100kmph gives decent fuel economy. Anything beyond that, and you'll get pathetic mileage

-In city, I shift as per MID recommendations.

-Keep air filter clean. Removal is easy, I don't wait till it gets clogged. For example, when I got my car washed at Pune during the trip, I removed the air filter and asked them to clean it with compressed air which they did happily. Hardly took 2 minutes but the amount of dust which came out, was insane.

-Ensure your brakes aren't dragging. This was the cause of FE loss in a friend's City.

Hi Leoshashi,

I too was hoping to get those new 16 inch wheels on my XL6 ever since I saw the new car and later saw you get it done brilliantly with the required updates. I had actually even waited without buying the car till 2021 hoping and believing rumours then that Maruti would bring in an updated version with 16 inch wheels.

Then today morning, while driving in the rain, the rear wheels went out of line after hitting some oil or diesel slick on a fast corner. Managed to get the tail back in line and the car was surprisingly composed through it. It wasn't nasty and I'm used to this stuff from younger days on the track but it did scare my wife a bit.

I think it's time I got the 16 inch wheels along with some better tyres and upgrade the suspension like you did for better ride quality, more ground clearance and overall dynamics.

And since the car's just done over 6k kms on the odo, I think I can sell the old wheel set on OLX for a fair price as well.

Could you please help me and share the part numbers for the Alloys, struts, rear shock absorbers and coil springs? The Maruti Suzuki ASC here near my home told me that they could get it in their inventory in a month if I place the order and that they could also do the swapping on my car.

Definitely, I was busy with a few things, thus the update got delayed. Thanks for reminding me. So here goes the entire saga:

21st April 2022: XL6 2022 gets launched, and the itch began. I approached my trusted tyre shops for a quote and they all dish out pathetic rates. I was getting around 3k per "wheel(tyre plus alloy), which would have been 15k return on perfect scratchless alloys and 20k km run Michelins which had no puncture and minimal wear thanks to my 5k rotation schedules. I was heart broken and the plan to swap wheels was nearly scrapped.

23rd April 2022: 2 days post launch and MSIL still hadn't launched the updated part numbers for alloys and suspension. This was unusual since Maruti usually updates the service side with these details before the actual launch. Meanwhile tyre shops quote me Rs. 9600 for Michelin P3ST and Rs. 9500 for Continental UC6s in 195/60R16 size.

29th April 2022: Part number of alloys come out, and they are priced at Rs. 9990. Thus as per these details, just the tyre and alloys(5 sets) would cost me near 1 lac. The suspension part numbers aren't out yet.

30th April 2022: I post an ad on OLX for selling my wheels, and since it's the norm on OLX to haggle hard over the quoted price, I price it at Rs. 45k for the set. My mental target was to sell the wheels if I get Rs. 35k. Unexpectedly, I start getting calls from pan India. Gentlemen from Chennai and Bangalore wished to buy the wheels, and so did a gentleman from Punjab who wanted just the tyres for his Altis. Shipping for sure was going to be a hassle.

2nd May 2022: I get a call from a known chap who owns First gen Ertiga for tyre recommendations. His steel rims were bent and rusty too. I told him about my intentions and he jumped at the proposal. He was getting new tyres(Yokos) at Rs. 38k, and here he was getting Michelins in excellent shape, plus 5 scratchless alloys for 40k! He blocked the deal. I was taken aback at the promptness because I hadn't even ordered the new alloys or tyres nor was the part number for new suspension known till then.

Still the deal was quite tempting and that chap also wanted the wheels ASAP, so I took a call and parked my XL6 in a corner, jacked it up and removed the wheels. It was a funny scene to see the car standing on jack stands for more than a month. I took the wheels to my trusted tyre shop for removing the TPMS sensors and sold the wheels there itself to the fellow. He was extremely happy with the deal he got, and even today after almost 2 months of usage, he is extremely delighted with the setup.

5th May 2022: During the Amazon sale, I placed orders for 5 Continental UC6s using 5 different credit cards. Had 2 cards within family while others were sourced from good friends. Because of this, the Continental cost me Rs. 6500 per tyre, and that was a significant saving compared to the initial budget. Also, I didn't opt for Michelin this time because A. 3ST pattern is old and discontinued, and may be replaced by P4ST anytime and B. supply isn't as smooth as Made in India Continentals. DBHPian Parag who is using them also assured that the Contis are as good as Michelins.

The tyres got delivered on 13th May. Entire experience listed here (Continental tyres) and here (Review: Buying Tyres on Amazon.in).

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20220513_103042.jpg

20th May 2022: Surprisingly, the new alloys came in stock on Boodmo and I placed and order during their 12% discount weekend. Also used Credit card for extra cashback. Thus the alloys cost me Rs. 43,920 for set of 5.

22nd May 2022: I approach my MSIL friend to arrange part numbers of suspension for New XL6. Even till today(30th June 2022), Maruti hasn't fully updated the part numbers on their internal system. He arranges the part numbers within a day and an order was placed with local MGP dealer for the same. The dealer was so scared to place an order for unknown part numbers that he took a 50% advance. Parts arrived in 7 days, and I also got 10% discount on the MRP as per our equation.

31st May 2022: I got the tyres mounted, install the wheels and the XL6 comes down after almost a month.

6th June 2022: I install the new suspension. While the front struts and rear shocks were quite easy to install, the rear springs proved to be a tough nut, and had to take help of my dad to install it cleanly. Highly recommend doing these exercises on lifts and not jack stands like I did at home.

25th June 2022: I had told my contacts at workshop and other places to find buyer for my old suspension components. Got a lead about an Ertiga Taxi owner who was interested for his car. He came to my place and had a look at the suspension and paid me the amount. He was happy to find these for 8k, when the new suspension would have cost him upwards of 17k.

I requested for a day since I didn't wish to give the shocks to him in that dirty state. Got it washed and delivered them to his place the next day.

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20220625_171641.jpg

Thus the entire project came to an end.

Economics: Initial projected cost: Rs. 1.2 lacs. Alloys: Rs. 49950, Tyres Rs. 47500 and Suspension: 20k(guessed)

Final Spent: Rs. 43920 for alloys, Rs. 32500 for tyres, Rs. 15390 for suspension, (-)Rs. 40,000 for old wheels, (-) Rs. 8000 for old suspension=Rs. 43,810

The final economics worked extremely in my favour and it was a win win for all parties involved.

Small yet significant things:

-Highly recommend not to go only for wheels upgrade. The ride becomes too harsh and that's something not desirable on an MPV. It had to be a functional mod for me, and thus I waited for so long.

-Part Numbers for easy understanding:
Alloy wheels: 43210M72R70-QC8(x5)
Front Struts: 41068M51U00 and 41069M51U00
Rear Springs: 41311M51U00(x2)
Rear Shocks: 41800M51U00(x2)

-Have driven more than 5000 km since the mod(thanks to our Ranchi-Delhi-Pune-Ranchi trip), and am extremely satisfied with the setup. Ride quality is much improved and settled compared to previous version. There is a significant increase in ground clearance too.

-My suspension warranty stands cancelled, and rightly so.

-Maruti networks are still unaware of the new part numbers. Heard the hard copy manual is now in circulation, and should reach them soon.

-Replaced the Tyre Placard too, part number of new one=79161M72S20

After:

-Weights of different wheel configurations I've experienced till now:

1. 185/65R15 Bridgestone Ecopia on Steel rim:

2. 195/65R15 Michelin XM2 on stock alloys:

3. 195/60R16 Continental UC6 on new alloys:

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain everything in great detail.

Then I too will upgrade it only along with the suspension upgrade. My only issue would be finding takers for the old parts.

I also have two small queries, the hub centre caps on the new alloys, They don't actually come with the alloys do they? Shouldn't we place a seperate order for them? Are they the same ones as seen on the 15 inch wheels?

And lastly, I don't mind using a 16 inch steel wheel for the spare tyre. Does the new XL6 come with an alloy for a spare wheel or a steel one?

Once again, thank you for helping me out.

You can reuse the hub caps of older alloys, they are same.

XL6 2022 comes with 16 inch steel rim for spare tyre. Part number for steel rim is: 43210M72R10-09L, costs Rs. 1960. You may also retain 15" spare as the change in tyre size is very negligible and you can safely use it like a space saver is intended to use. That way you save some more.

Since I follow 5 wheel rotation every 5k km, I got 5 alloys.

Shashi

@leoshashi
Curious to know what was the odo reading before the suspension swap. You mentioned about deterioration in ride. Wondering in what mileage/odo this started and any thoughts on longevity of normal XL6 suspension. Thank you
