Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Hello LeoShashi, What brand and type of grease do you use for your strut mounts? I am having these replaced on my Esteem and will adopt this good practice from now on.

Any generic grease. Nothing fancy. Also opt for Swift 3rd Gen's strut cap if Esteem didn't get one originally. It's a perfect fit for my 800 and prevents grease to accumulate dirt and debris, if any. Also improves the looks.

Hi LeoShashi,

I've been considering an MUV like i mentioned in your thread and I prefer XL6, especially your version for the K15B and the 4AT. The only thing i like about the newer one is the suspension and 16 inch rims. So I'm considering a preowned XL6 and upgrade to the suspension of the newer one.
Can you please throw some light on what parts have been changed in the suspension and the part numbers.

Thanks in advance.

For everything stay tuned. You'll get detailed report on the same, hopefully by end of this week.

The most expensive component is the new Alloy wheel, costs 10k per piece, suspension is around 18k expense. That's all I know as of now.

Regards,
Shashi

PS: Maruti has launched incomplete parts details, even to its dealers. No one is aware of the new part numbers. Few part numbers like that of alloy wheel is known, others like suspension etc are not yet released officially. If for example anyone loses his glass/windshield, part number of new UV cut glass isn't known today.

Thanks you so much for inputs. Appreciate your quick response.
I will go with STP itself and update the outcome once done. Unfortunately the mech who was right next door shifted his shop to a new location. Else would have been convenient to check on progress and keep a tab on work done.

I have upgraded to 195/65R15 which is essentially the same wheel dia as the XL7. While my heart will always long for the sweet 16 inchers of the XL7, head says I now have the best possible alloy-tire combo. The increased sidewall surely helps in improving the ride.

A long awaited dream, finally fulfilled! My XL6 gets proper legs.

Since I'm yet to swap out the suspension, I'm refraining from posting a detailed report on the same. Suspension swap is scheduled for next Sunday as I wished to experience the 16s on stock rims once. Till then, enjoy some teasers:

Have been eagerly waiting for your post here since the day you've posted about your new tyre purchase from Amazon in the Tyre and Alloy wheel Section. Have been checking daily 3 to 4 times.

A quick word on Ride quality: It has indeed degraded, I could feel a lot more surface undulations and the potholes feel sharper(somewhat like 2015 Balenos on 16 inch rims, before suspension recall). For a people mover, it's surely not desirable to switch to 16s and retain stock suspension.

Shashi

May be the ride quality will improve post suspension upgrade and Maruti may have developed the new suspension keeping in mind the ride quality and lower profile of tyres. How is the steering wheel feedback? Is it the same or you can feel the weight?

Anyways the xl's stance is completely transformed now and looks real bad-ass.

The car looks totally transformed.

How about the spare tyre wheel. Does the 16 in wheel fit into the spare tyre holder?

Would you recommend going for 195 width or 205 width tyres on the 16 inch wheels?

Yes, the wheel is heavier by 1.5kg each, thus suspension tuning was anyways needed to counter unsprung weight. Suspension swap will be done by Sunday evening.

Steering weight remains same, perhaps because I was on 195 patch earlier too.

Thanks, I'd call the stance Confident now.

Hope this helps:

Spare tyre factor was one of the main reasons I never opted for aftermarket wheels since they are mostly 6.5J or wider.

While the 16 inch alloys can easily take 205 width tyres, it's not something I'd recommend because it's simply not needed. 195 is more than enough for XL6.

What is the total financial damage for the wheel, tyre, suspension swap. Can you share a ballpark figure.

I'll explain everything in detail, won't be proper to give a rough estimate for a project which is WIP. Request you to wait till Sunday.

There is a way, the issue is, Maruti is yet to launch part details for updated XL6 and Ertiga formally. I somehow managed to get part numbers of alloys and suspension components after some hit and trial method. The local MGP store from where I ordered suspension were so scared to order it that they called me 5 times to confirm and eventually took an advance before ordering it. Till now, the system doesn't show which model they are for. It was all an educated guess and it's correct, thankfully. The sticker on suspension components all read YHC MC which means XL6 Minor Change.

The speedo difference now compared to stock is around 2.9% so it's liveable. I was on 195/65R15s till now which itself had 2.5% speedo error. If you include the actual speedo error against GPS speed, vehicle speed is now exactly same as GPS speed.

Once the part numbers are out, fixing speedo reading should be an easy affair. This is the first time Maruti has messed it up so badly, they used to launch full part manuals days before actual launch of the car.

Regards,
Shashi
