The work I did a few years ago involved me choosing colors based on how they looked on a computer screen. The fact is that every colour will look different in real life as compared to a screen. Not only that, it will look different on every computer screen.

There is no getting away from the fact that for a bigger purchase like a car, its highly recommended to see it in real life rather than go by the pics.

Was it the Camping Co. Travel agency that provided you that vehicle. I follow them on Youtube and is nice to see the couple venturing into Overlanding as a business.

I do not expect there to be any professional setups similar to the Wranglers to be made for the Thar. The necessary epxertise and budgets just do not fit in with the Indian market for leisure vehicles.

Also, anything involving drilling holes in the fibre hard top is just asking for trouble during the Indian monsoons.
Yes, I agree, the finesse and the expertise required doesn't exist in India. Even if it exists, the lack of scale makes it a very bespoke and customised build which will skyrocket the cost.
How much I wish overlanding in India could pick up

Mods on Thars have mostly been hard top builds and related stuff uptill now, or some garish builds up in north with insane tyres etc. Nothing functional for everyone in the market. But if I take an analogy from bikes, with the launch of Himalayan and more adventure oriented bikes, the market of customizations has evolved a lot. Could the Thar do the same in the market? Not an apples to apples comparison, but hope it does.

Till then it's what we have from factory,.

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

Front portion of the HT variant roof can be easily removed !

Just unbolting few screws can easily remove the hartop area in the front portion. I checked it out myself at PPS Bangalore and confirmed it with their senior technician. Iam sure, Mahindra will be selling this as a separate accessory soon with latches inside to remove the FRP area in the front portion and use it as as a sunroof. Pics are attached for proof !

Interesting. Any information about the sealents used in the corners/joints for waterproofing? If we take it off and put it back, how effective is the waterproofing going to be?

Thats a great find, thanks a ton for your efforts! In fact the only thing that was holding me from booking the Thar is the absense of a sunroof or a removable panel + the initial niggles from the first couple of batches.

I cant wait for Mahindra to come up with some easily operating latch mechanism for both front and rear panels, if not atleast for the front!

This way we can use the Thar for highway touring as well remove the roof panels for trail driving.

Great - but without taking care with the sealants etc leaks would be a problem.

An easier opening mechanism would really make this the best option something like the Hyderabad Hard Top https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-t...-top-thar.html (Hyderabad Hard Top (Thar)) along with provision for water drains is needed.

M&M never said that it cannot be removed. They said that you will have to get the removal and re-fitment done at a dealership to ensure it is done properly. I guess the concern would be water-proofing once you put it back on. I would take a dealer's word with a pinch of salt for obvious reasons

I had asked this earlier and trying once again. Has anyone tried removing / re-fitting the doors ?

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

So I got the my first glimpse of Thar.

Caution: All below points are biased as I have fallen in love again, so please excuse. Issues will be looked as features, and compromises will be looked as change in lifestyle.

After many days of calculations, forum viewing, being a pendulum between indecisiveness to decisiveness, I went to Sireesh Auto Silk Board, here at Bangalore to see the beast.

My few thoughts:

1. As I entered the showroom my eyes were greeted by, no, not Thar but a XUV3OO. Not sure why is that the first vehicle in the showroom in these times. Nonetheless, eyes turned around searching for the beast and there it stood, in black color, in a rather low lit corner. It looked menacing, imposing and I fell in love. Yes, it was love at first sight and I told that to my wife standing next to me.
The vehicle is huge, the R18s are massive and stand near the tailgate, you realise how big the tyre is. Wheel changing will be some gym work.

2. Lost in love, I climbed inside, there is no ingress feeling here, you climb into it. Me and wife are lean built individuals, and the front seats were very comfortable. It was hard plastic all around, but everything felt in place.

3. Storage places inside are limited, meaning you will have less opportunity to keep trash in the car, travel with needed stuff only will be learnt.

4. Back seats are comfortable, enough room to sit. I was gleaming in love so I was overlooking the blacked interior specially making it dark at the inside of rear side. Wife did point that out and yes, it indeed was dark. I will complain the exterior lighting more for that to quite an extent.

5. Golden issue of climbing into and getting out from backseat. When you go on a safari, you have an option of doing that on an elephant or in the comfort of a jeep. Hope you get the drift. Climbing out is tad more difficult than climbing in, period. Primarily because the side step is not that protruded out as you would expect while stepping out. You will realise, 226 cm of ground clearance is quite some height.

6. Boot. Yes it has a boot space. As I said earlier, you will learn to travel light. Yes you will. Travel even lighter if rear passengers want to recline seats. But it is liveable (for me atleast). You have to be smart with your luggage choices, period.

7. No point in talking about the looks. It looks awesome. While the previous Thar was beautiful in its own sense, this one does not look agricultural or utilitarian. This one looks like a modern 2 door SUV, and looks good in that avatar. And no point in comparing it with creature comfort toys in that price bracket. It is a big boy toy and looks like one. It is a jeep and it looks and feels like one.

8. Love is blind they say, may be. The world of a blind man (no offence to be taken please) is very different. He experiences the world in his own colours. And I have fallen in love.

9. Big Boy Toy. Yes, at 17.5 lacs on road in Bangalore, it is a BIG BOY TOY. But one that brings the kid out in you. Every day, every moment when you see it. A toy you won't hand over to anyone, no one.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw it and I fell in love again and again. Yes, it's a romance, and if you can afford (financially, mentally) to fall in love, you should.

By the way, they are already talking of 3 months waiting for Diesel auto. Let's see, I intend to book mine tonight.

Of course yes, any part on a car should be easily removed with right tools and skills. However point here is whether the front portion alone in the HT can be removed or not. I guess no one discussed it before and hence I posted it. So my point is, with right tools and skills, one can easily remove the top in front and hit the trail with that so called "wind in the hair" feel !

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

I’m finding it so hard to stop my dad from booking one. We decided on getting the LX diesel AT hard-top in black shade. Generally, it’s always the father that stops their children from making impulse decisions, but when it comes to the Thar, it’s the opposite. He saw one today and he calls me and tells me “I saw one today and we still don’t have one, WHY?”

He can’t wait to drive it to his farm. Following is the picture of a shortcut to our farm and connects our farm to the main road. Our Innova obviously can’t make it through this. So, my dad wants to drive through this as many times as possible before the government builds a road.

Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive-cf8e6c55b28d43f99fa9ceafb077f803.jpeg

Damn these niggles or else I would have booked one by now.

We’ve been seeing M&M test the new Thar for a long time and I’m surprised the car still has niggles. What’s with Indian manufacturers M&M and Tata and quality problems? Why can’t they figure it out in even in 2020? We all already read about the electrical issues, the other issue is the brakes that I mentioned in my earlier post. I 100% trust GTO’s review and he said the brakes were fine and another BHP’ian also said they were fine. However, 5 of my friends test drove the Thar and each and every one complained about the brakes. The only conclusion I can come up with is there might be a quality problem with the brakes. Maybe the one we drove here in Vizag has faulty brakes.

Another major miss by M&M is that there are no grab handles to climb in to the car. Either the A-pillar is weak and it can’t handle an average persons weight or someone at M&M is missing the basics about a tall car that you climb in to and not slide in to. Ridiculous. I’m 25 and I definitely can get in to one. But, my father is 55 and he certainly needs a grab handle. When I test drove the Thar, it was all dirty and the step provided to climb in to the car was also full of slippery mud. I found it extremely hard to climb in to and get off the car because the step was slippery and my pants would end up catching the dirt. I had to grab the steering wheel and climb in to the car. I didn’t expect M&M, a SUV specialist, to miss something so basic.

So, we’ve decided to postpone our purchase to Sankranthi January, 2021. I don’t think I can hold off my father after January. I’m hoping M&M will sort out the brake problem and electrical issues by then. I also wish they add grab handles to both the front doors. Although I doubt they’ll make such a change in a new car.

First the wait for August 15th and next the long wait for October 2nd and now the wait for M&M to sort out the niggles. I hate this.

Shade card is way off. Try the 360 degree view on the website

So I saw the aqua blue at a showroom. It looks very different than the Marazzo shade ( or maybe it was the lighting in the showroom that caused the offset, I infact confused it with grey

What is this snow chain provison that only AX has but LX doesn’t? I have asked this question to 3 different sales advisors but none seem to know

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

I believe snow chain isn't available in LX because of the ESP and the BLD. Their configuration has to be done properly to accomodate snow chains.

However, I am not sure if this is the exact reason.

The last thing one would want to do is pick the color based on how it appears on a screen. The way to go about it is to check out the color options in-person before finalizing. However having said this, Mahindra has no Thars lying in the stock yard in abundance as of now for a in-person check - unlike other models.

The only way one can get to see their color of choice if someone books that exact color variant and the car arrives for delivery at the dealer. I have explained my preference to the dealer and this is the best (only) way out as of now. I recon this is going to continue given the high waiting period as well.

I have seen enough of the black, aquamarine and the grey. Red and copper is something I don't personally like. So it's rocky beige for me. However, someone has to take that first leap of faith as far as the rocky beige goes - I am waiting for someone to do this for me before I take the final call.
