One of my friends is planning to buy a car. He is confused between Nexon diesel and Altroz diesel. His primary criteria are good steering and handling. Out of these two, which one would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the booking!

No IRA does not lock/unlock the doors. You can only operate Hazard lights, head lamps and horn.

Either way, it is a beautiful car and the looker of the lot in its segment.

Hoping you have a long and happy ownership with this beauty!
Thank you for the wishes

Thank you !

I don't think the dust is from rear wheels. It gets dirty all along the top of the spoiler to the rear bumper. I guess it has to do with the design of the tailgate.

Indeed! All their recent launches have been stunning.

That is a tough one. While Altroz clearly wins in handling and steering, the nexon comes close, and with that 18 extra BHP and 60 Nm torque over the altroz, coupled with that 6 speed MT, it is one fun car to drive too. I loved wringing it in the sports mode.

Body roll will be more on the nexon, owing to the height and increased GC. At 120 kmph highway cruising, Nexon returns more fuel efficiency than the altroz due to the 6th cog. So it depends on what your friend wants. If he is into outright power and does not care for the looks- Nexon. If he wants a car that looks gorgeous as well as handles beautifully - Altroz. The sense of space in Altroz seems more than in Nexon, while Nexon's rear seats are more comfortable than Altroz (better underthigh support in Nexon).

If it wasn't for the looks and raised stance, I would have chosen the nexon over the altroz. I am not a fan of C-SUVs.

And let's not forget that there is almost 2 lakhs price difference between both the cars. At that premium, Altroz definitely is more bang for the buck.

Update

Odo : 4000 km

I tend to use Altroz totally. Safari saw less than 800 km last month, that too because of the 1 day 500 km drive to Sivakasi. Looks like Storme will have to wait another 3 years for clocking next 20k km. It was driven 22,000 km in 9 months this year since Ciaz was sold in Jan 21.

Getting used to Altroz's terrific fuel efficiency, refilling the tank of my storme is not a very pleasant experience

The big boy returned 11.5 kmpl. Honestly, It is very decent for a 2 tonne SUV with 5 on board, and being driven at upper triple digits 90% of the time.

While the Altroz returns 17 kmpl even when driven very hard. Here, at 90 kmph cruise control set, the car returns a full 30 kmpl on the highway

Tamilnadu saw heavy rainfall this monsoon. Roads are all messed up. The altroz has been driven over some worst roads and it has proved to be really sturdy.

First proper Wash and Wax polish

If you had followed any of my other ownership threads, you will very well know that I love to wash my cars myself. I get a deep feeling of satisfaction doing it. I also become aware of all the paint chipping due to stone hits (I drive fast on the highways), and other surface scratches if any while I wash the car.

Since delivery on October 27th, the rains were non stop till December 2nd. I naturally had no chance to properly wash the car to my satisfaction. I managed to wipe it clean when time permitted in November.

I was free today and used the time to do some minor detailing aka wash & waxing.

It took a solid 45 minutes to wash the car clean. Noticed a couple of minute paint chipping due to small stone hits on the front bumper. It's like 2 small dots one would not see if they aren't keen.

After washing, I opened the Car care kit pouch that was given with the car. They gave one to me last time after 40k km service of thr Storme. It had a windshield wash liquid, wax polish, a micro fiber cloth, dash polish and a sponge.

I thought the same would have been provided. Upon opening, I found that they have given a different set of stuff. It had a glass cleaner, dash & tyre polish and a car shampoo.

Prassy's 1st Small Tata | 2021 Altroz XZ+ 1.5L Diesel | Ownership Review | EDIT: 2 yrs/58k km update-20211205_104107.jpg

I had to use the kit I got for the storme.

I feel Tata's wax is not as good as MGA's wax polish. But it did its job. Took another 1 hour to complete the task.

He drove the Altroz and told me it was superb to drive. He drives an S-Cross. I got to travel in the rear of my Altroz for the first time. My shorter 6'2 frame was happy to be there too. I noticed that the rear ac is more powerful(more air volume) than the one in my ciaz.

Prassy's 1st Small Tata | 2021 Altroz XZ+ 1.5L Diesel | Ownership Review | EDIT: 2 yrs/58k km update-20211205_083607.jpg

Optimum tyre air pressure is 31 psi, as I travel solo most of the times. There is tangible change in ride quality. The car feels plusher with 31 psi vs 32/35 psi that Tata recommends for 2/4 occupants + luggage.

Some pics of the Altroz

With my friend's Polo 1.0 MPI. The car has decent low end driveability, but absolutely flat mid range and negligible top end

I believe it is the "Fuelio" application on Playstore.
I use it and find it extremely useful to track all my vehicle-related expenses.

Altroz is one the best looking hatches available currently. Rightly said - red hot beauty. With 1.5L engine, this should be a pocket rocket!

Many congratulations on putting 4000 trouble-free kilometres on this red beauty, sir. Your regular updates with those press-worthy images are just a treat to read! You're investing a lot of effort in the splendid upkeep of the car, and I hope it reciprocates similarly by staying trouble-free!

I was wondering if you considered installing a stone guard / underbody plate, like a few BHPians have done one their cars. As stiff as the Altroz's suspension is, nasty roads are a given in every corner of the country, and the added peace of mind would go a long way over the years of ownership. I'd request other Tata Altroz owners on our forum to please weigh in on this topic as well!

Update

Odo : 5100 km

Prassy's 1st Small Tata | 2021 Altroz XZ+ 1.5L Diesel | Ownership Review | EDIT: 2 yrs/58k km update-20211218_174512.jpg

It has been 52 days since Altroz became my daily driver. I have used my storme and kwid for about 10 days in between. The altroz has been an excellent primary ride for the other 42 days.

The 5k milestone!

Prassy's 1st Small Tata | 2021 Altroz XZ+ 1.5L Diesel | Ownership Review | EDIT: 2 yrs/58k km update-20211218_115433.jpg

The fuel efficiency has stayed impressive. Overall tankfull to tankfull fuel efficiency for the entire 5100 km is 18.9 kmpl.

Never believed cruise control can be useful in Indian conditions. I was wrong and how! I have been using cruise control even in rural roads I can cruise as low as 30 kmph in 3rd gear.

The boot is being used more than I thought it would be.

Be it Christmas sweets for my staff

But everything in between, the car is exposed. In my opinion, the altroz looks sweeter in the wild. I just hope no kid keys it when parked out on the roads. That bright red can be inviting!

Instances like this makes me diss Tata for not giving 195 section tyres for diesel models. My next tyre upgrade will definitely be 195/60 if not 205/55 R16. Normally the stock 185 section tyres don't look undertyred at all, but such exceptions like this makes it look puny.

The inlet had a plastic mesh to filter particles that might clog the wiper spray nozzle. Good job Tata!

As usual, some pics

At the time when both the brothers decided to refill our steeds at our regular bunk at the same time. You might notice the absence of the front number plate in the Harrier. That is the result of some aggressive water wading by him. Asked him to not do that again. Lol.

I have not seen a manufacturer with an obsession for rear fog lamps like Tata. Altroz gets just one, while the Storme gets 2

With 3.5 hours of average daily driving, the car becomes sort of a second office, often times seeing the coffee breaks. The altroz interior is one nice place to be.

Next update will be the 2nd free service update, which is scheduled at 6500 - 7500 km. I might be doing it in the first week of the New Year. One more cool stuff I like in the Altroz - Cornering fog lamps. Really useful! I will try to capture a shot clip of cornering fog lamps in action along with the 2nd service update.

Thank you for the kind words!

Now it has completed 5100 trouble free kilometers. I am sure (hope) it will stay so for 50k, 100k, 150k and so on.

The altroz has a partially covered engine bay. I drove a ciaz without any engine cover for 1.34 lakh km over some really bad roads and managed it fine. I plan to follow the same with the Tata

Excellent ownership experience

Your thread is constantly pushing me to move the Altroz back into contention. A silver iTurbo was a dream but the underwhelming powertrain of the iTurbo(than what I was expecting) and TML's service stories had pushed it out.

Will follow your journey, thanks for sharing.

An ownership review from you was something the Altroz needed badly. People ought to know how good a car Tata has built

Great photos and words to match the beauty that the Altroz is. Could be camera angle doing the trick, but the Altroz looks huge when next to the Kushaq

That kind of average you are getting, puts it in Maruti's range but with full 5 stars of GNCAP . Best from both worlds! And she is a looker anyway . I think you should consider doing a gloss black roof for her , will look more attractive.

Thank you!

Surprisingly my experience with Tata A.S.S has been problem free.

Thank you!

It's the camera angle and the fact that the kushaq was parked 2 ft behind the altroz. Nevertheless Kushaq is one compact car though.

I think the last few posts of mine didn't show the car from the top view. It is already gloss black on its roof for the XZ+ variants.

Hatchbacks like Altroz , i20 and Jazz have better road presence than Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun. Tata should introduce diesel AT and the sales will skyrocket

Nice ownership review! I see an exact same red ALTROZ XZ+ in my parking lot everyday & cant help but notice that it has good road presence, very smart exterior design and equally good interiors. I am eagerly waiting for its diesel AT variant as my father in law's i10 is due for a replacement soon.
