One Year and ~6400kms Update
It’s already been a year since we brought this car home and time is really flying!
Since the car was billed in end of May 2024, the 1 year service cycle will also be scheduled in May of every year. Had got a call to book the service anytime between 9th and 28th May 2025. Got the 1yr/10k km service done on 17th May 2025.
Toyota Service Centres in Mumbai have really dropped their ball hard, in the lookout for extracting the maximum moolah out of customers, they have dropped their service quality that they were known for at one time!
Hope Toyota India takes conscience and pulls up their socks up quick, before things really go downhill.
The SAs are smart to see that a chauffeur has brought the car for service and quickly give an almost ₹10k estimate. My dad lost his cool this time and blasted him, the SA called me begging for help to spare him. The bill was brought down to ₹2k post this and I added the rat repellent (since this car is more prone to rat attacks, especially the O2 cable that lies exposed beneath the car) worth ₹2.3k taking the total bill to ₹4.6k.
Since we had taken the 2 Years Toyota Smiles Pack, these were the things covered in it:- 1Year/10k kms Inspection
- Windshield Washer Fluid
- Synthetic Engine Oil 5W30 (Same as the HyRyder’s)
- Oil Filter replacement
- Gasket replacement
- 2 Wheels Balancing (Front Only)
- Wheel Alignment Inspection
I have had a much better service experience in a Tier-2 City, at Harsha Toyota, Kadapa, AP. I got my Fortuner serviced here and the overall experience is far superior to what Mumbai service-centres are peddling.
Coming to the car, it has been a city crawler for quite sometime now. Due to this reason, the range after a tank full has fallen to around 550kms only, compared to the previous 650-700kms.
An unexpected trip to Nashik came up towards the end of June. Took the Samruddhi Mahamarg till Igatpuri, but the road to join the Samruddhi Mahamarg is in absolute shambles!

The new tunnels inaugurated on the new stretch are state-of-the-art. With the Igatpuri tunnel being the longest tunnel in Maharashtra at 7.7kms. The paintings on each tunnel’s face is breathtaking to say the least, hope it stays the same way in the future as well.
The longest tunnel in Maharashtra currently, measuring 7.7kms
Sat in the 3rd row for the first time over a considerable distance and other than the small window, it’s a great place to be in!
Tested the Adaptive Cruise Control properly after setting it at 119kmph, it takes a lot of stress out of driving and Toyota has got the calibration spot-on.
On the way back stopped at the food mall in Igatpuri for some coffee before rejoining the Samruddhi Mahamarg back to Mumbai.
2 years ago, had clicked pictures of the X3 at the same spot. But this is India and you shouldn’t be in disbelief if you spot a building come up in the most unimaginable places… The beautiful valley and hills beneath and behind are now perfectly hidden
Amidst the clouds
Moving from Ladder Frame Petrol/Diesel Toyotas to a Monocoque Hybrid Petrol Toyota is not an easy shift! With low profile 18 inch wheels, have to slow down over every undulation on the road, still getting used to it! Example: With the Fortuner here in rural AP, where some road construction pops up in the night, I can go over that construction patch without battling my eyelid, which is definitely not thinkable with the HyCross.
The plasticky cabin drives me nuts sometimes when we are travelling as a family with no music playing in the car, the rear centre table creaks and groans over any road, even expansion joints and the front centre armrest is a squeaky affair from day one as well! If this is the state in 1 year and ~6000kms, I wonder how will it last over a span of 10 years.
I’m still not convinced 100% that this car can fill the void left by the Fortuner at home, as a dependable, ultra-reliable and tough-as-nails operator. The plastic quality and having to baby the car over bad roads is something I’m still taking time to get used to, even a year later! I have found that at 35psi, the car absorbs bumps much better than 33psi, that I was filling previously.
Of course there are positives like, the quiet cabin, comfort, acres of room thanks to the monocoque construction and Hybrid powertrain’s efficiency in urban environments.
There are two major Flaws I’ve read/found about from other HyCross Owners:- The front drive shaft, both right side and left side are going bust in no time. It’s a bloody expensive part at ₹80k for both the left and right drive shaft. Some people are on their 2nd replaced sets as well !! Once the car is out of warranty Toyota gets a cool ₹80k into their pockets for no fault of the customer.
- The O2 sensor underneath the car is exposed and is a very common spot for rats to chew on. Some dealerships have started selling a fabricated plastic cover to put on this spot to prevent rat bites. Costs about ₹7k.
Both these issues, just shows how Toyota India is silent, minting money left, right and centre from their cars and service centres. Toyota knows the issues very well, but is showing customers their cold shoulder. It’s a simple recall that they need to roll out, to make the amend, rather than customers coming into the service centre to get them replaced.
Upgrades Done on the Car in the 1 Year:- Aozoom FLP 2030 projector foglights installed replacing the stock candle-light foglights. Done from Lakozy Toyota itself, keeping my warranty intact, and have not activated the high beam function of the foglights as well for the warranty aspect.
Cost: ₹19,000/-

Only the Low Beam of the headlamp is switched on here

With the low beam of the headlamps + foglights switched on. Got them properly aligned at Lakozy Toyota, when the car went in for its service, since there was a hotspot being created by the left fog projector after the initial installation
- Non-illuminated Master Window Switches Upgraded to OEM Toyota Japan Illuminated Master Wjndow Switches. Part No.: 84040-42150 & 84040-30330 both will work. First one belongs to the RAV4, meanwhile second one belongs to the Corolla Cross.
Cost: ₹13,200 (Part Cost + Shipping) + ₹4,800 (Custom’s Duty) = ₹18,000/-
- Non-illuminated Individual Window Switches upgraded to Illuminated Switches as well. These individual switches require a coupler to light up the switch unlike the Master Window Switch, which gets it from factory.
Cost: ₹6,000/-

A collage of all the illuminated window switches
- All Exterior Bulbs (except the puddle lamps) upgraded to white LEDs.
Cost: ~₹5,000/-

- Photochromatic Film (Black) for the headlights and front logo. It serves a dual purpose for me: acts a protective film against stone chips and at the same time gives the car a stealthy look once sunlight (UV rays) hits the film. Got this done from Carzspa Goregaon.
Cost: ₹5,000/-

Installation in progress including on the front logo

The film being applied on the headlight

With sunlight hitting the headlights and logo, the film has turned smoky, giving the car a very stealthy-look
- Maybach-esque pillows for the rear seat headrests. The primary reason for ordering these were that when the seats were reclined, the back would be in contact with the backrest but the head wouldn’t be, so these pillows bridge that gap perfectly, at the same time being softer and comfier.
Cost: ₹2,400/-

On camera, the colour of the seats and pillow looks different, but in reality it’s pretty similar. This was an impulsive buy, that turned out to be exactly what I was looking for
- Ceramic coating for all the glasses, making them water repellent.
Cost: ₹5,500/-
I had ordered the Master window switches from YoshiParts.com on 21st Feb and after a long and gruelling wait with Mumbai customs the package was delivered from Japan in April.
I finally installed both the Master Window Switches and Individual switches once I was back home end of May.
The entire set of Illuminated Window Switches
Stock Master Window Switch Part No.: 84040-VT010. Only the driver’s window switch is illuminated
Have to pry open the Master Window Panel from the top and then slide it out from the bottom end
Once opened, there 2 couplers present: Top coupler is for the Mirror Adjuster Switch and Folding/Unfolding the Mirrors and the bottom larger coupler is for the Master Window Switches, Window lock and Lock/Unlock buttons
Have to unscrew 3 screws holding the master window switch panel together
The Passenger Window Switch panels need to be pryed open the same way
Unlike the master window switch panel needing 3 screws to be unscrewed, there is no screws holding the individual switches. Just three clips that need to be undone to change the switch
The individual window switch with a chrome tip
Here I haven’t installed the individual switch in the panel, but the coupler needs to installed between the stock wiring and the new switch for it to illuminate
The complete ambience of the cabin has been uplifted thanks to the illuminated window switches. Also these switches feel a lot more premium to operate and look as well thanks to the chrome tips
It was a simple 30-45 mins swap, tools required were a ‘+’ head screw-driver and a prying tool. Have made a small video, tried my best to show the steps required to change the Master Window Switch panel.
Upcoming Upgrades:- Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) Compatible Blue background logo for Hybrid Toyota vehicles
Procured this TSS Compatible Hybrid Toyota logo from EBay USA. Fun Fact: A new TSS Compatible front Toyota logo costs ₹28,000!!
- At some point this year, I plan to get a ceramic coating done. This colour is spectacular but needs additional attention and care to ensure it remains the same way. After some bird droppings on the bonnet, I am noticing some marks that didn’t go away even after a meticulous wash, which would’ve otherwise not been visible on a lighter coloured vehicle.
I noticed a dent on the driver’s door, right at the edge where some paint had chipped off as well. Don’t know where it happened, even my driver was clueless. I had availed the PDR (Paintless Dent Removal) services of Mr. Sushil Gaikwad in 2023 for my X3 and Fortuner and promptly called him to get it fixed. He brought 50mL of Blackish Ageha Glass Flakes (colour code: 221) along with him and after pulling out the dent to his best satisfaction, he touched-up the paint with a thin brush.
Before: The dent on the driver’s door, where some paint had chipped off as well
After PDR and a little touch-up, this is what it looks like
Had the opportunity to go for an airport run recently and the boot with the last row folded down is no joke. It swallowed 2 Large suitcases, 1 medium suitcase and a cabin-sized bag with absolute ease, with some space still to spare!
The boot is massive and the low loading lip helps a lot
Overall this has been a great purchase and we’re really enjoying the car, major thanks to the hybrid powertrain, which keeps the cabin quiet at all times and delivers some impressive fuel efficiency figures in the city. Only if the plastic quality was better, this would’ve been one perfect car.
Never in my life did I imagine one day I’ll be getting 20kmpl from any of our car, that too in urban conditions Quote:

Would love CEFBeasts to shed some light on this model. |
As you’ve already mentioned and guessed correctly, Toyota India makes this variant only for fleet operators. It’s basically the GX variant but with the inclusion of the hybrid powertrain.
