Re: My Deep Forest Mahindra Thar RWD Review

Just to share something I learnt about car insurance when I bought my Brezza a couple of years back.

I had a Fiat Palio which I sold at the time of the purchase.

I sent a mail to SBI General Insurance - to transfer and retain the NCB component of the Fiat Palio insurance to my name. I had a 50% NCB component.

There are applicable charges to retain / transfer the NCB, it was about Rs 600/- in my case in 2021.

So, I was able to transfer the full 50% NCB component of my insurance to my new Brezza.

I ended up paying about Rs 24000 instead of the Rs 42000 which was the insurance without the NCB.

The insurance company person initially told me that such a facility does not exist. When I told him that insurance policy permits the retention of the NCB, he reverted that, yes, the same is permissible.

The NCB can be retained for a period of 12 months from the sale of the old vehicle, till you buy your new one.

You might want to speak to your Mahindra SA and get hold of your Brio insurance papers and mail your insurance company to transfer the Brio NCB to your name.

Once that happens, give the NCB transfer letter to the Mahindra SA, and claim the NCB amount from what you have paid for your Thar.

70mai Rearview Dashcam installation:

After reading Dr.AD's thread where he mentioned this dashcam, I decided to buy one. The rear visibility is actually a big pain considering the spare wheel blocks most of the view and if there are passengers behind, they block the view too.
I bought it on Amazon and went to Auto Style, Koramangala for the install since it had good reviews from many BHP-ians.

Some pictures from the install:

I have not yet found an ideal position and do face some glare during the day. Others who own this dashcam, please do give some insight.

The rear camera for the dashcam is actually fitted outside on the bumper due to it's wide angle lens.

The car hit a 1000 kilometers on the way back from a trip to Mysore.

Also had a small pooja at home a day after Ayudha Pooja:

The two cars looking good together

The Thar will head out for service next week since the service center was closed due to the holidays here in Karnataka.

Until then, thank you!

Re: My Deep Forest Mahindra Thar RWD Review

Looks stunning in the green shade. Could you please share your experience with the brakes of the 2024 Thar? My test drives on two different Thars have been extremely disappointing as the brakes didn't inspire any confidence at all, felt really weak even at 40 kmph . This has been a deal breaker as I really wanted to get my hands on the Thar.

NCB reservation letters are valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

Thank you. It sure is a looker!
Coming to the brakes, I find it more than adequate. I had to do a hard brake when someone decided to cross the expressway. The car was at 100 km/h and came down to about 35 km/h without much fuss. I personally don't feel the brakes are an issue. Were the Thars you drove TD vehicles?

Yes, Sir.
Both were test drive vehicles, 2023 models. I watched a plethora of videos on YouTube, some reviewers have mentioned that the brakes are lacking. But these were all 2023 and earlier models. This has left me confused. I am fairly new at driving and Honda City and I20 are the only cars I've driven, the brakes felt crisp on both.

@ brute_forz

I own a RWD Diesel Thar and the brakes are more than adequate. It is 18 months and 24000 kms up and the brakes are very very adequate.

Cheers

A Jeepy thing with its boxy build is inherently non aerodynamic. Its behaviour under braking and its braking characteristics themselves are totally different to the Honda City and I20.

From a cruising speed of 100 kmph (which in my opinion is the max one should drive the Thar at) the distance under braking, which one will cover, to come to a complete halt, is considerably more than in a Honda City or I20.

Having owned an ‘early Thar’ (2021 Feb) for 3 years and 30,000 kms with a lot of highway driving, until I sold it in Feb 2024, I tell you that the front disc brakes of the Thar are ‘bitey’ and pretty effective from normal speeds in the plains highways and in the hills too. The rear drums do the job quite fine and in my experience have never locked and caused ‘fishtailing’ .

The brake disc rotors are tough and do not warp easily. Mine was on its first set when I sold it and there were no scratches nor scoring marks. The brake pads are also heavy duty and give lasting service. Again these things are dependent on the usage and maintenance.

However, while the Thar is a very powerful vehicle and has lovely engines, being a big huge square box, it is simply not worth driving it at very high speeds, considering the above facts coupled with the sheer unpredictability of our roads, highways, traffic conditions and crowds.

But there is no reason to be fearful of its braking abilities under normal usage conditions, especially when considering the physics of such a vehicle type.

I agree with Rajeev and Shankar below, the brakes are more than adequate. Not sure how well the TD vehicles are maintained. Do ask them if it's possible to drive a 2024MY car.

Appreciate the detailed response, Shankar ji.
I barely touched 50 kmph during my two TDs and still found the braking sub par. At higher speeds, I do agree with the boxy shape and higher weight coming into play and affecting the braking performance.
Based on the responses from yourself, Rajeev ji and yuvmudapa, this could be a case of heavily abused TD cars. I'll try to get my hands on an MY24 TD vehicle if possible. Haven't had any luck yet.

Thank you.
