Is there a chance of getting a remap to unleash the full power of that engine ?

I think those who think of buying a 4x2 Safari will now seriously look at the the top end Sumo Grande (GX). Its amazing VFM at 7.49 lakhs. Top notch features, great looks with that 2.2l engine (albeit detuned). Its seating arrangement is also highly configurable. I believe finally Tata will manage to get the personal car buyers to seriously consider the Sumo as an option.
By the way what is this Phoenix thing in this URL? :) Its Grande they have put in the main pic... However the Phoenix is visible in the three small frames at the bottom. Wow!!! Just see those frames. Amazing is the word. Looks like some brute American SUV. Tata is going to rock the Indian car market at this rate.
Anyone seen this URL? ;) haa haa haaaaa |
Seriously guys, doesnt that rear look very very CARish?
Thats doesnt really gel with the aggresive front and side.
But hay, the package on the whole is really tempting.
Wouldnt the new Grande also kill safari (Unless tata does some thing different to safari)? Grande has better interiors, better manevourability and cheaper than Safari.

ballkey : 250Nm from 1750 RPM? Revenge of the taxi drivers...

Not so fast. The Ex-showroom price of about 6.5L translates to about 7.25L OTR. The Victa GX Turbo was available at 7.10L OTR in Bangalore. Almost four years since the launch of the Victa GX Turbo, I am yet to see a Maxi-Cab powered by 90 horses. All the Sumo Maxi-Cabs I have seen have the NA engine.
Guess the Winger, with the NA engine is what these operators will (continue to) use. The Sumo Grande will be targetted more at individuals & the luxury taxi segment. Not the regular taxi / Maxi-Cab segment.
Tata motors today announced the commencement of sales of its latest passenger vehicle offering, the Sumo Grande, in the domestic market. Sumo Grande, unveiled at the Auto Expo in January this year, will be commercially available from dealerships located in metros and select large cities from February 22, 2008, and progressively across the country in a phased manner.
The new Sumo Grande combines the looks of an SUV with the comforts of a family car. It has been specifically designed to satisfy the needs of city customers in the areas of driveability, maneuverability and fuel efficiency. The Sumo Grande sports an all new styling with clean chiselled looks mating with flowing contours. The tall aggressive stance is complimented by large clear headlamps, and a cutaway air dam in the front. The clean rear look, with the spare wheel tucked under the body, is accentuated by attractive tail lights and a chrome overlay.
Designed with a longer wheelbase of 2550 mm (existing 2400 mm), the Sumo Grande sports comfortable 3 row seating with best in class third row seats. Beige interiors are complimented by fire and stain resistant fabric upholstery. Dual HVAC with roof integrated louvers ensures personalised climate adjustment for the occupants in each row. Power steering, power windows, motorised ORVMs, height adjustable driver’s seat and a state of the art CD/MP3 music system further add to the comforts and convenience of a family traveling in the Sumo Grande. The vehicle is powered by the new generation 2.2 L direct injection common rail (DICOR) engine, fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger creating a perfect blend of performance and fuel efficiency. Maximum power and torque of 120 PS and 250 Nm, coupled with high torque levels over a wide RPM band enhance driveability in stop start city traffic. For a vehicle its size, the Sumo Grande is extremely maneuverable with the turning circle radius of 5.25 m, similar to a small car.
The Sumo Grande will be available in 3 variants – Lx, Ex and Gx -- all of which have two seating configurations – 6+1 and 7+1. The vehicle will be available in 7 colours, including 4 new shades, Sunset Orange, Zephyr Green, Mineral Red and Marine Blue. The Sumo Grande range is priced in the range of Rs.6.55 lakhs to Rs.7.49 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). It comes with an enhanced warranty of 2 years or 75000 kms. (whichever is earlier). An additional 2 years’ warranty can be availed through the extended warranty option.

Great one! They have benchmarked the Ford Escape the Ford Explorer and the Escape Hybrid upto the logo on the grille.
The Grande look great. Tata is surely bringing about an Automobile Revolution in the country. Kudos to them.
As far as the Safari is concerned, guys, TATA is a company run by professionals and not idiots. The management must definitely thought of something. They know what they are doing. The Grande is here to counter the prowls of the Scorpio and will not eat into the Safari's sales. After all, a Safari is a Safari :D
Did anyone notice that the rear suspension of SumoGrande is different from that of Safari. Are "parabolic leaf springs" really good or are going to break the 2nd and 2rd row seater's backs?
hmmm :uncontrol what if they introduce a 4th model of grande with abs+airbags+4wd with on road price of 9.99 lakhs

Oh no,no,no,no, please no. No decals please.
this package is too good to be true..!! what is the catch here ? isnt this going to kill the scorpio in one go ? and maybe even the low end variants of safari...
it could have been named simply tata grande rather than sumo grande, sumo has a taxi out look and this one is more stylish and should have been indented to the upmarket people who was going for the tavera just because a safari was not affordable.the name gives a taxi aura which many wont like -take the example of jk das .lol
