Severe fogging of the windscreen

I acquired a new Palio last month and I've completed about 2000 km now. Two days back I had the first experience of driving in the rain and it was harrowing to say the least. The rain suddenly poured, and I immediately turned on the wipers to slow and then later medium speed. The rain stopped afer a few minutes but by now the windscreen was completely fogged. I could barely see anything and I was almost in panic and managed to pull over to the shoulder. I had turned the blowers to the defogging position but still nothing helped. I then tried wiping the screen with a piece of cloth and discovered that the misting was happening outside. Now unsure what to do, I by chance turned the AC to heater position. Initially the windscreen got even more misty but seconds afterward the glass was completely clear.

I've now learned to do this all the time. Once the glass starts to mist up, I just turn on the AC to heater and let it that way for 15 to 20 seconds until it completely mists up. And then I turn off the AC. Within seconds the glass clears up completely. Needless to say, I dont do this while driving!

Hope this helps any one in a similar situation someday. I wonder how this happens though.
