Hi,
We just completed a Pune-Goa round trip on the Punto.
Its an absolute blast to drive on the highway. One of the best cars I have ever driven on a highway.
Rev-happy takes a new meaning when moving from 3k-5k rpms. It has a lovely roar which makes my heart flutter with joy.
We completed the Pune-Goa trip in 12 hours with 5-6 stops.
The way back saw us reach Pune in 12.5 hours with an hour long stop at Mahabaleshwar.
The average hovered somewhere around 13-14. It really isn't very fuel efficient.
Lugging the engine hits the mileage hard, but we saw our loss due to higher speeds.
Best mileage figures were returned at 100-110 in the 5th gear.
The ECU seems to be weirdly programmed on the Punto.
The torque curve seems to be very quirky. Of course all this is what I gathered from driving and not off a dyno.
Their is a jump at 2100 rpm and then another one at 3000 rpm. The second one is very subtle, however the first one is what has been annoying people.
After the long highway drive (we covered 1200 kms), I have changed my driving style for the city too.
With things about the lack of torque at low end becoming clearer, it has becoming much easier to drive it in the right rev range in the city. As a consequence, drive-ability in the city has improved by over 50%.
Would recommend all 1.4 owners to rev their machines hard without worrying about the mileage (by hard I mean keeping it in the 2500-5000 rpm range). It makes driving it a great experience.
The suspension and the legendary handling was put to a rigorous test and came out with impressive results.
After hearing the engine note, I just wish we had a bit more power on tap.
The car isn't exactly underpowered, it just feels like more power would do justice to the character of the Punto.
We faced no rattles after the trip. The build quality is solid and the vehicle felt very poised on the road.
One thing is clear, the 1.4 is not for people looking for fuel efficiency. Its a nice, high-revving engine and a awesome suspension to boot.
Let me know if anyone has any queries about the car.
Cheers!
