Hyundai i10 Automatic - A Chennai experience

Hi BHP-ians,

I'm writing to you from Chennai. I bought a Hyundai i10 Magna AT 3 months back, from HMP. Just wanted to share my experiences so far.

Buying experience:
HMP at Chennai are truly the best professionals in the business. It is owned by Hyundai car company directly. I had absolutely no troubles whatsoever from the dealer. However, you must do your homework and learn to negotiate the best deal, in terms of price, free offerings like Stereo etc. You will get only what you asked for, the dealers are not going to suggest anything extra for your sake. That said, I have to say, HMP for me has been a dream experience.

Financing:
This has been a headache for me. I'm new to Chennai, and I had booked my car within 2 months of coming here. I got my loan form Axis bank. But the Bank representatives were horrible. At one stage, even the Sales Manger had the nerve to tell me that their bank deals with 70+ customers in a month, and mine was not a special case! Anyway, after blasting their Headoffice and GM with emails, finally I got some results (after one month though). So, be careful about the source of your loan.

Delivery and initial ownership:
My car was delivered within 10 days of receiving cheque from bank. However, the car had some stickers left over from the factory, on the front grille. There was no way to take it off by hand, without scratching the grille. I had to wait till the first service to get this fixed!!!

At the time of first service, my car had run only 50 KM! That's because I had to travel abroad for a period of 2.5 months. I don't know what effect this will have on the engine in future, but I felt it was better not to miss out on the first service.

After the first serrvice, my car was giving me only 7.5 KMPL mileage in Chennai city traffic. This was too poor, considering that first service is over. So I decided to take a short travel over the weekend to Bangalore, to see what effect the added Kilometers will have on FE.

I recently went on a road trip to Bangalore. The road from Chennai, via Vellore and Krishnagiri is absolutely awesome! It was a smooth road. It's only 350 Kms via this route (one way). I was careful never to exceed 2500rpm all throughout the trip. The average speed was 90 KMPH (between 80-100 KMPH, 2500-3000 rpm). The effect of this trip on the car was awesome. I got an unbelievable 18.5 KMPL mileage! This was without AC, full tank petrol and 2 passengers at the above-mentioned speeds. On the return leg, I used the AC and this time I got close to 16 KMPL. I couldn't believe these figures, but then I did double-check them by using the full tank method, and it is accurate.

As of now, my car is 3 months old, and has run 1100 KM. It is due for Second service only in April 2010. Nowadays, my city mileage is around 10 KMPL, using AC for 50% of the time driven. This is close to the average that most users of this car are getting. Maybe it may improve over the next service. Will keep you all posted.

Thanks and happy motoring!

Your figures are great. Quite a lot of early adopters here on T-BHP got horrid figures for the first few months, and then the FE picked up gradually. There's a thread running on this as well.

Where are the pics?

Congratulations on your i10. One of my cars is the i10 Magna though manual. Its a lovely car. Initial FE figures are usually low in the beginning. Hopefully they would improve further and should reach their optimum post-third service.

Congrats Renji,
I am driving my i10 for the last 3 months and have covered 2.5k. I am getting about 11km in hyderabad traffic as mine is manual. Auto is expected to give about 1km less. so about 10 km for auto should be fine. also the milage depends on driving habits. 7.5 km in city seems a tard less.
Sometimes I am getting a foul smell when I switch on the blower of AC. But tis is only sometimes and not always. It is there for about 5 mnts and goes off.(May be we get used to the smell in that period). I went to the showroom with the complaint but the murphys law prevailed and there was no foul smell there. The service advisor informed that if here was any dead rat in the AC dut, the foul smell would be continous and also there would be rattling sound.
Is any other i10 owner having this problem?
Pl advice
Thanks

1. Did not measure for sometime but I got around 12.5 kms in the city with my manual transmission i10 Kappa, with 100% AC on.

2. The horrible foul smell on switching the AC on first thing in the morning is a problem not just with the i10 but with other cars as well. In my i10 it was bad, like stale rotten food, but this got drastically reduced after the first service, and even more after the second service. Its winter here and the temp is 11 max and 3.3 min so there is of course no AC being used. I do not know what is in store for me when I use the AC first time sometime in end Feb/March maybe. Any case, it is always advisable to open the window before switching on the AC, so that the initial gust goes out since its toxic. But most people forget to do so, frankly so do I!!!

Hi Bala,

The foul smell is due to growth of fungus/bacteria on the Evaporator coils of the airconditioning system.

All airconditioners work by blowing hot air from the room/cabin, over a series of hollow copper coils, inside which a very cold refrigerating gas is flowing (the similar coils as those at the backside of a window AC - all AC's have them, including cars).

When hot air meets the cold coils, the water vapour condenses on them, producing the water that comes out of all Ac's. But unfortunately, in cars, the coils are tightly packed to save space. So the water tends to accumulate in between the coils, which encourages the growth of fungus and bacteria. This growth gets blown away the next time air is passed over them (eg. when you switch on the AC 1st time in the day). And thats what you are smelling everyday!!

I suggest you try to switch off the AC atleast 5 mins before your journey is over. This way, the water is evaporated off by engine heat, before it accumulates in between the coils. If you like, there are specialist workshops for car AC's alone, so try to find one and get your car AC serviced thoroughly, just like you service your room AC.

Congrats renji3 - 18 kmpl on i10 auto seems like a dream, be it on the highways.
You can hope the city mileage to increase to around 13 kmpl slowly.
Keep posting, and we demand a few pics of your prized possession!
