FE Update after 600 km - single day

-Air pressure : 34 & 39
-4 adults + 2 children
-10 kg of bags mainly water bottles

Had a single day pilgrimage trip to Kumbakonam from Chennai yesterday. Started at 5.15 am.

Filled Diesel at IOCL ( I follow IOCL and do not want to change till FE check after 1st service) at Vandalur - southern outskirt of Chennai on NH 45. Filled to the brim. The bunk has lost business due to a newly constructed fly over and it was confirmed by the pump man. So I had bit apprehension about the quantity and also quality, but as already low fuel warning has come I filled there itself.

-Trip meter set to "0" But the DTE showed around 670 (I forgot to note exactly )

-Good quality NH
-2 Toll
-6 speed breakers
-Max speed 80
-Early upshifts
-Shifted to 5th exactly at 65kmph
-Maintained 2k rpm at 5th gear which equals exactly 80kmph
-Complete A/c except at 2 tolls

-Drove exactly 88.9 kms and filled again till the Brim (allowed Diesel to overflow a bit) in IOCL at Minnalur before Tindivanam.

It drank exactly 3.44 litres of Diesel. 88.9/3.44=25.8 km/l

I was terribly excited and surprised. Even though DTE showed a lower value at the 1st fill and after driving 89 kms, the DTE value got reduced by 1/3 of the 89 kms which is around 25 kms.

Continued driving till 160kms in NH and took a left for Kumbakonam. The road became bad and the small towns are full of traffic.
Drove in village road ( mostly in 2nd gear and sometimes 3rd) and reached Kumbakonam.
After temple visit and lunch started again back to chennai. After travelling 110km took a village road. Road is extremely pathetic and did the entire 12kms in 2nd gear.
Hit the NH again and reached chennai around 10.15 pm. While nearing chennai, there were lot of heavy vehicle traffic so need to shift gears as some truckwalas do not stick to a single lane.

Again I missed to fillup tank before entering chennai.

Did some city trips in Chennai today at medium traffic and filled Diesel again in IOCL.

Drank exactly 29.04 litres and the tripmeter showed 596.

Two ways of calculating:

1. 596-89= 507 (I did not Zero the tripmeter at the 2nd fill at Minnalur)
507/29.04=17.4
2. 596/(3.44+29.04) = 18.3

My conclusion - In highways min of 20km can be achieved if you drive in 80km/h

-Total NH, SH and village driving.
-No bumper to bumper traffic more than 1/4 a km at times
-Lots of idling
-Switching off the eng after 30 sec of idling always
-Complete A/C
-Max speed 82 (reached 90 once to overtake a truck)
-Climate Hot & slightly humid

Observations:
-Vibrations noted in door pad after tire pressure is kept 34 & 39
-Rear windows come down 1 or 2 mm after driving 2 to 3 hours
-Underscrapped in a illegal size speed breaker in SH. In the next one I took a diagonal crossing to avoid.
NOTE: Under scrapping also happens if there are multiple big potholes at both sides. running board hit one (luckily I was slow)
-The carpet mats are dust inviters
-The OVRMs can be positioned to note whether rear tires are deflated due to puncture or not if you feel any odd in driving. (1st time I found this. If guys already done this - hats off)
-While dim/dip, left lane change indicators works some times
-A/c fantastic - water bottle was cool -kept in parcel tray

My odo reads exactly 1900.

Will add later the forgotten points

Congratulations for getting extremely good mileages. The high air pressure in the tyres also contributed to the same.

I am in 5th gear once I cross 50kph!

Thanks trrk. Yes. My normal air pressure was 32 all tyres. Since around 5 people are planning to travel - I kept 34 & 39 even though 36 & 41 was recommended. But I feel some door pad vibrations once tire pressure was increased.
Credit must go to the good NH and less traffic on my onward journey.
Since the car had 4 adults I did not shift 5th bit early. Normally I do between 55-60kmph if I am alone.

Excellent figures. Another proof that that engine is quite capable but the variance is quite high for the liking of an owner.

I normally maintain around 28-29 all around. Anything above that i feel that the car becomes bouncy and i can know each an every unevenness of the road.

Gemi, but the ford manual says 30 all around for unladen weight!!! So may be you should try at least 30 psi!!

Gemi - Slightly lower inflated tires give better grip and comfort, but FE and tire mileage would take a beating. As anil says better to have 30 or bit more.
