Excellent Review Sid! I guess was not expecting much from Fiat India, so i am not very disappointed with them on putting 90hp together!

Peter if you're listening , Its upto you to do what Fiat failed to do so.
Give those "extra horses" the appreciation they deserve.

P.S i know there is an existing Box for the Linea but i would prefer a "customized" version for the GP with better performance figures .

I have a question on the ARAI FE figures quoted for this car. I remember reading in this thread somewhere that the FE stands at about 20 kmpl. But always the real FE figures as noted by the respective owners of the car is less than what is quoted by ARAI. Is there any specific reason for it?

The figures which we quote are average figures. But the ARAI figures are probably best figures achieved under test condition which normally corresponds to driving techniques for maximizing efficiency which in normal life we don't really follow.
These are only my thoughts.

I really don't belive this, as my car's ARAI figure is 17.6kmpl, but I always get 20 or 20+, it also depends on what filter/engine oil/tyre/type of fuel some one uses, with proper driving habits.

I've been hearing for a week from the dealer (Concorde), that the registration formalities of the 90HP Punto (TD car) has not been completed because they are 'yet to receive some papers from Fiat'. I remember that when Punto was launched, people had trouble getting the car registered because some paper had not reached the RTO. If it's happening again for the 90HP Punto, then that's very bad management on the part of Fiat.

Speeds(in kph) Punto ==== I20

0-100 (in secs) 16.21 ==== 12.75
20-80 (3rd gear) 13.97 ==== 16.61
40-100 (4th gear) 14.72 ==== 20.55
Above figures of Punto 90HP compared to i20 CRDi, do they tell anything good about i20 CRDi? Or they only tell how slow the Fiat Punto 90HP is!!!

Actually Hammer Head as per the figures posted the Punto should be more drivable than the I20.

Somehow in the case of Punto we can have an expectation of the car performing much more closer to the potential on the spec sheet after about 5000 kms. We have been hearing report of how all the diesel cars perform after 5k kms, but have been hearing of especially improved and refined performance for the punto diesel after 5k kms. So maybe if we had a run in I20 go head to head agaist a run in Punto 90hp it might make sense.

Watched the OD review of the 90Hp Punto on CNN-IBN the other day. They cribbed about the gearing, saying the first two are too short and the third is too long ! As usual praised the Punto for its ride and handling. 0-100 timings was mentioned as 15.xx and they mentioned it being 3s faster than the FGT Punto. They concluded saying that this is the best Punto you can buy in India today.

One thing it clearly tells is how different the gear ratios are for both cars. I20 inspite of having a clearly better outright acceleration, fails to impress in drivabability.

Of course! When you have a donkey and mule to choose from, its much easier . No offense to Punto owners!

The new Punto 90hp with a 0-100 time of 16.61secs is just as fast as the Polo and Figo, they have a 0-100 time of 16.69 and 16.26secs respectively. Figures from ACI.

Engine and Gearbox:
The engine idles much more silently than the 75HP variant, thanks to the VGT and additional sound deading material. The cabin is much more silent. The gear box is a bit notchy and is absolutely not best in the class. Moreover the icrease in HP cannot be felt at all in the first gear. The fun begins only after you slot the second gear.

Steering feel:
The steering is amazingly light. It requires absolutely no effort. This is a major change compared to the lesser powered siblings. However it weighs in perfectly as you attain the speeds. So parking the 90HP variant will be lot easier.

Chassis and Suspension:
There is no marked difference here. The handling remains amazing as well as the ride quality.

Fit and Finish:
There is 30% to 40% improvement in the fit and finish. The panel gaps of plastics have improved and have a bit of soft touch to them. The body paint is immaculate as ever.

Verdict:
Most asked question- "where have the 15 horses gone?". The answer is they have gone in improving the in-gear acceleration. Don't be fooled by acceleration or lack of it in the first gear. The fun begins in second gear and onwards. Here are the additional 15 horses.

Will I buy if I were in themarket now? The answer is a resounding yes.
Nicely put MCR! I have the same thoughts. Why do people think that the 90 HP will suddenly become a rocket? Well it won't.

Straight line acceleration is not the strength of Punto, but driveability, ride, handling, braking & high speed stability are its forte - any challengers?
