I have heard that Jazz makes has a lot of cabin noise after 120kmph? Is this true?

The last time I drove the Jazz I felt very unsafe..

@MG5, 120 kmph on the Jazz is approx 3500 rpm in 5th gear. The engine noise can be heard at those rpms but it increases to a nice sporty roar above 4000 rpm. I like it personally, as when I am in the mood to rev, it gives that sporty feel. But that might not be the case for another person.
Below 3000 rpm, you can barely hear anything.

About the tire and wind noise, I would say it is good if not great. All cars I have driven get noisy after 120 kmph. But, to be frank, I found the insulation to be good and never bothered me. May be the other Jazz owners can throw more light on it.

@Driving jazz at 120 kmph or more - I have done it so many times and never felt unsafe. I graduated from a bike and then a Santro. So, Jazz feels lot more stable. Jazz IMO is pretty stable at high speeds with the stiff suspension and good chasis, definitely better than the tall boys. At the same time, I feel the Polo/Punto/Fabia offer a more planted feeling on the highway.

@MGM5, i don't agree with the above. I think Jazz does not make a lot of cabin noise at higher speeds.

Also at 120kmph Jazz does not feel unsafe. Last week i was on a trip with my friends and they were surprised to see that we were cruising at 120kmph and all were of the view that it did not feel like we were going at 120kmph inside the car.

16kmpl is great mileage. I have been only able to readline for 2nd and 3rd After that road runs out. :Frustrati

Hope i get a road where i can readline 4th and 5th also..

Hey Scrooze, good that you too feel the same. I don't trust myself on the same as I didn't even used to feel unsafe on my Santro at high speeds. lol:

The car will hit the redline at 4th but won't do so at 5th, as it is a overdrive. 5th gear max rpm is around 5300 I guess, and the speedo will be around 180-85 kph.

By the way, take care while driving at high speeds.

I have never redlined my Jazz yet at the 3rd to 5th gears. Probably because I have never crossed 100 (or had the confidence to cross) on Indian roads in any gear. I am a very suspicious driver and expect something to jump in front of my car anywhere anytime.

I guess I should start by trying to redline in the 3rd. I will see how that goes and then decide if I want to the 4th and the 5th.

Driving to BLR in Feb, I consistently did speeds over 120, regularly hitting 140 - 150 in my Jazz, I did not notice any undue noise nor did it feel unsafe. My 2 cents.

Jazz is extremely stable at high speeds, and in fact this is one hatchback which feels less Japanese and more European (due to its solid feel, stiffness and road manners)

Just a question though – why are we getting so concerned about the car’s ability to do speeds above legal limits? :)

Hi adimicra& selfdrive,sorry I couldn't reply earlier to that query. Mine is 16" alloy with tyre size 195/60. Ride is not so harsh over potholes,though I just speed through potholes rather than go slow,not fast,but just enough to glide through,that way I find it less bumpy,correct me if I am doing the wrong thing.

well said. Right from the build quality, Jazz feels more European than Japanese. And it is extremely stable at high speeds. May be a tad below the Europeans like Punto or Fabia, but better than other Japs and Korean cars.

Its all in response to the questions from @MG5. But, you are right speeds above 120 are not safe even in the highways.

Hey Ramesh, 195/60R16 is not the correct size for tire upgrade of jazz.See this -

Original tire - 175/65R15
Sidewall: 4.48 in
Radius: 11.98 in
Diameter: 23.96 in
Circumf: 75.26 in
Revs/mile: 841.86

New Tire - 195/60 R16
Sidewall: 4.61 in
Radius: 12.61 in
Diameter: 25.21 in
Circumf: 79.21 in
Revs/mile: 799.92

Speedometer reading with new tire is 5.24% too slow.
When your speedometer is reading 60mph you are actually traveling 62.99mph.

Anything more than 3% difference is not recommended, AFAIK.
The ideal size for 16" wheels in Jazz is 185/55 R16, which is available in international models. But, I won't recommend it for reasons mentioned before.

I think 195/60 R15 will be a ideal upgrade, though the stock size of 175/56 R15 is good enough if you get good quality rubber like Michelins.

As long as you are reasonably slow over the bumps, it should be fine. Otherwise, the suspension might get damaged as well as you back :)

Alright, so when I switch to alloys, I should look at 15" and get the Michelin XM1 in the size 175/55. In essence this will be only changing/ switching and not upgrading. I presume this will only increase the ride comfort without compromising on handling?

Looks like I will book the Jazz this week, I have two important questions for you.
1.) Do you have an idea of the total maintenace cost (labour + consumables) during warranty period (4 years/80000 kms)?
2.) Did you spare a thought for the resale of jazz after 5 years of ownership? What would be the expected price, a range would help?
3.) What all accessories to push for as freebie :-)?

yes. but it is 175/65R15.
I think in technical terms, it is called upgrading.
Changing to thicker/bigger tire is called upsizing.
It's fine as long as we understand the point :D

Michelins will improve ride comfort and also provide better grip (handling) and have less tire noise. Basically, better in all aspects. They claim to provide better FE as well due to less rolling friction but not sure about it.

1) Jazz is only a coupe of years old. So, difficult to answer the question.
My service costs so far have been -
1st service at 1 month - nothing, just a check up
2nd free service at 3 months - included oil change - bill approx 900/-
3rd free service at 6 motnhs - included oil change - bill aprox 900/-
4th service at 9 months - include oil change - bill approx 1700/-

About the 3 month service interval, I have spoken to Honda and the Service Manager. They have agreed to not change the oil before 5000 km ( or 6 months). But servicing is required every 3 months for other checkup.
I think annual maintenance cost will be around 5-6K.

2) No idea but should not be very bad. People know it is a good car and Honda has proven reliability record. So, people who have bought/considering buying at good discounts should be fine. May be @selfdrive can help.

Thans adimicra! IIRC, I also read somewhere (maybe one of their ads) that they also enhance braking. Apparently, cars using Michelins stop upto 3m earlier than those using other tyres. A good way to advertise reliability/ grip.

Well, when I bought my preowned Jazz she had already done 26K in a little less than 2 years. I was very skeptical as this seemed high to me, but had no choice as I could not afford a new Jazz at the time (with the Nano and all). My thoughts then were that I will sell it off and upgrade within the next year or two.

I have done another 3.5K kms in around 2 months time, approaching the 30K mark soon! When I bought my Jazz, the dealer had already ensured that it was serviced. However, I had another service done just for my peace of mind. The only thing that needed to be changed was a wiper blade.

My experience has been so good that I have now cancelled all upgrade plans. The only way I will upgrade is if a 1.5L stonker is launched here. Else, I guess I will keep her for as long as she runs fine. I hope this should not be an issue considering its a Honda :)

Feel free to ask any specific questions that you have about the car itself and also any offers that you have received as a prospective buyer. Prices of course will be subjectively dependent on how the car has been maintained.

Thanks adimicra for your inputs. Your description of service interval is true, today i enquired again & if i opt for synthetic after 10k kms, I can push it all the way to 20k kms. But you say there is a regular checkup every 3 months which sounds more frequent, is it only till 10k km?

There are chances that I may have to move out of the country for around 6 months down the line. Under such cases, won't my warranty be void if don get it serviced?

We jazz owners will now have something to cry. Honda has reduced the price of jazz by 1.75 L ! The resale value of our car must have dropped down like anything. Honda just cheated on us. Just imagine,Honda making a cool profit of about 2L from the jazz we bought. But who knows, there might be a price war in the offing. And it also makes us wonder, are petrol cars not selling much nowadays?
