As far as I can make out, this is some new "feature" that VW has added! Take it to the workshop and get it fixed -- Others had the same problem and as far as I know, it has been solved by VW.

We are really enjoying our 1.6. The thing to bear in mind is that there is no heat-shield in the bonnet of the 1.6 (unlike the Tdi), so all sounds are apparent in the cabin.

Moreover the RPM range is high -- It red-lines at 6,000 with max. torque at 3,750 rpm. So you put in lower gear and let it rip and you can see it pull and break away.

Most of the time, people tend to change gears early on the Polo 1.6.

I suggest put your music in max and let it rip once you break her in, which incidentally is not a requirement as per the manual.

Same goes for overtaking. Down-shift when in doubt and you can feel the rocket take off!
Special Feature! Anyways, i did not have VW Service station nearby so i went to a tyre specialist and got it aligned. Some problem with the toe (as mentioned in the print report) and the car is running straight as an arrow.

Did you get the heat shield installed? Is it a plug and play kind of job?

I am used to revving the nuts off my old Swift 1.3 so that's what i'll do with this baby once it gets the TLC initially. Infact i don't think it's a slouch in 2nd gear as people in this forum & elsewhere consider it to be, it is as you say, changing gears early!

I know the manual has no run in instructions, but the pulse still rises when you rev it hard! Will wait for 2000 odd kms before i go ahead and drive it like it should be driven.

Looking forward for a long trip on the highway.

If he said its a camber issue, I'd say you visit them at once and get it checked and sorted out. An off center camber may damage your tire tread, ride as well as suspension in worst cases. Are you sure it isn't a steering rack calibration / play / alignment problem?
Eagerly waiting for regular updates about your ownership experience and of course, your DSLR at work!
Wishing you unlimited happy and safe miles with the German red devil!

Cheers!
Thanks! The Polo deserves nothing less than a 1.6, though a turbocharger is sorely missed.

As mentioned in the reply above, turned out to be a minor toe adjustment, just like you predicted!

Looking forward myself for a photo session of the devilish beauty. Expect it pretty soon!

Thanks! Well, i never took this car for the mileage, but going by the Trip meter, it should be 9-10 kmpl mostly driven in city.

We get 10.5 to 11 on ours in city bumper-to-bumper traffic, but my wife drives with a light foot. In the highway we have crossed 15.

You will get 9 with spirited driving. And really that's what this car is for!

Regarding the heat-shield, sorry to confuse you. The 1.6 doesn't come with one and it is not required as per VW.

But the sound makes you feel that you must shift early, even though maybe the engine is only screaming with excitement in anticipation that you will rev her high.

Performance, modifications & Tyre upsize queries for VW Polo 1.6

This goes to all Polo 1.6 owners. I am completely not interested in the FE, so wanted to know if there was OEM turbocharger that could be fitted directly! Has anyone gone in for any performance upgrades on the Polo 1.6 viz K&Ns, free flow exhausts & stuff?

Also, anyone who has upsized the existing tyres? I was considering Yokohama 195/55-R15 and i wonder if it will fit properly.

Has any of the owners tried sourcing EU spec smoked headlights with Projector lamps or even Projector upgrades in the existing headlight. I was skeptical of the proceedure shown on you tube where you heat the headlight, pry it open and adjust the projector. Worth the risk?

Woah! Honestly I am pretty satisfied with the Polo 1.6, so haven't thought of any upgrades yet.

Moreover there is the small issue of the warranty and I would be wary of making any changes during the warranty period especially since I am not 100% confident with my dealer.

The only change I have done is to get Philips Night Xtreme H4 bulbs, but I haven't put that in yet.

I think Chethan or someone else said initially in June or thereabouts that he will procure the new smoked headlights "at any cost" from the UK. Not sure what happened since.

Let us know of any modifications you do.

Hi Nowwhat - do you know whether the 9003/H4 bulb will fit in the Vento too? I was about to order the Philips extreme power from the powerbulbs website, and paused while considering the size. I recall reading somewhere else that Vento has H1 - which surprised me .. (can't see size myself since the car arrives on Monday, next week) .. TIA.

Re: Polo 1.6 Red Devil...the Germans got the better of me!

Hi vipin,
Congrats on the rocket hatch! Looks smashing in the glossy red! I'm glad that you picked Polo 1.6 over Fabia 1.6. Those clean and straight lines, wow!
Your second batch of pictures looks hot! That too, the 2nd & the 6th photos in particular, I'm floored!
You have mentioned that you're getting 10.5kmpl in sedate driving and 9kmpl with some heavy foot! Rip her apart at least on weekends then
BTW, 1.6 engine + turbo charger =

Do keep us posted and once again congrats on the car.
Drive safe.

Hello Vipin,

Congrats on your new purchase. She looks absolutely fantastic.
As you mention you want to replace your OEM stereo, I have a proposition. I recently purchased a Comfortline TDI Polo and am looking for a decent stereo. Since I am also located in Noida we can hook up and see if we can strike a deal. You can contact me on 9810566779.

Cheers,

Thanks! I also got the 3M coating done at the time of purchase, but the pics would'vr even better if the car were cleaner!
No offense meant, but i wouldn't be caught dead in a Fabia for sure. Somehow i feel it is an "uncle" car as compared to the "chic & urbane" polo.

The second batch was clicked in the basement of a mall with only tubelights and no tripod. Also i was using a wide angle lens whereas i would like to shoot during daytime with a 50 mm or something. The 3rd is my fav too. Like the way the car looks muscular in profile and the sixth took me a really steady hand!

Trust me i am having a hard time controlling my right foot as the car really has very linear power delivery and feels eager to thrust ahead. Anytime soon!
Really wish there was a way to get the turbocharger installed by VW itself without voiding the warranty

Thanks! I am open to the idea. I might have someone visiting China in a few days. I will call you in a day or two and we'll discuss. Ciao

Do update me in case there is a way to get those. That should really distinguish the car from the crop of 1.2s.

Hey TBians! Need the help of people who might have got tyres upgraded or have any idea of the same. Was planning to upgrade to the Yokohama 'S' 195/55 R-15 on the stock alloys. What would you guys suggest? I ahve JKs 185/60 R-15 as of now.

Forgot to say Vipin, your Polo looks smashing in Flash Red! It's a great colour to have especially if you maintain it regularly.

Vipin: If all you are concerned about is the sound quality, I suggest you first try changing the speakers. Chethan saw a marked difference when he switched the stock speakers to Hertz.

On the other hand, he also found another marked difference after he upgraded the HU to Pioneer.

Sorry, no idea about the Vento headlamps. Your dealer can perhaps give you this information in a jiffy.

Philips Night Xtreme H4 is somewhat easily available in India. No need to order from the UK.

On the other hand, someone on Team-BHP did order from PowerBulbs.uk and the European-spec packaging was different and he felt it was better. But the price was almost double if I recall correctly.

Hey TBians! Need the help of people who might have got tyres upgraded or have any idea of the same.

I have JK Vectras 185/60 R-15 as of now and i checked on a few links of tyre upsize configurator and got this:

Stock Tire - 185/60R15 >Search Tires Tire 1 - 205/55R15 >Search Tires Section Width:7.28 in185 mmSection Width:8.07 in205 mmRim Diameter:15 in381 mmRim Diameter:15 in381 mmRim Width Range:5 - 6.5 inRim Width Range:5.5 - 7.5 inOverall Diameter:23.74 in602.99 mmOverall Diameter:23.87 in606.29 mmSidewall Height:4.37 in110.99 mmSidewall Height:4.43 in112.52 mmRadius:11.87 in301.49 mmRadius:11.93 in303.02 mmCircumference:74.58 in1894.3 mmCircumference:74.98 in1904.4 mmRevs per Mile:876.1Revs per Mile:871.3Actual Speed:60 mph100 km/hSpeedometer1:59.6 mph99.4 km/hSpeedometer Difference: -Speedometer Difference: 0.550% too slowDiameter Difference: -Diameter Difference: 0.55%

Was planning to upgrade to the Yokohama 'S' 205/55 R-15 or any other brand on the stock alloys. According to these guys anything lesser than 2% (some people say 3%) is a safe choice. Calculator shows it is 0.55%. My point is that speedometer error aside, tyre brushing against the wheel wells is more my concern and also the suspension and/or steering issues. What would you guys suggest?

Thanks nowwhat. Will try and keep it shining always.

Well, my main concern is that the aesthetics not be spoilt. I am looking forward to getting the Witson GPS touchscreen unit (like Ankit) for this reason and later if i need, the speakers. How much did the Hertz cost? What should i go in for if i want exceptional clarity at low to mid volumes?

Congratulations Vipin, wish you many many Exciting miles in your Polo 1.6.
You car is gleaming and I suppose you did the right thing by having the 3M treatment done at the earliest.

As you are aware, i booked the same at VW Gurgaon on November 23 and they commited me December 23 as my delivery date. As a result of days of praying to god and suddenly becoming religious, my prayers got answered and i got the car on Monday, December 06 (Car reached the dealer Sunday evening) as i could not let the baby be with them.
Wow!, yours is an exception, in the sense, got your Polo 1.6 within 2 weeks of booking and as per many posts in Team-BHP, members are awaiting car delivery for months.

Have you checked the VIN, can you please share the manufacturing date.
*Just to have an idea as many VW dealer informed Customer that VW stopped production of 1.6 for few months due to already pending deliveries (Vento launch!).

Can you please elaborate on this, it seems Polo doesn't have any tire/steering wheel alignment - as per posts in Team-BHP, if that is the case what was done in your car to rectify the "Pulling Left" issue, is it related to camber.

Thanks man! The red Polo deserves a 3M coat for sure.

I was really lucky to get the car for sure, but it was a really interesting story. I was driving to my office and saw a silver Polo in front with a VW Gurgaon dealer number. I called the landline number and took the Sales manager's number and to my surprise he said there was a red Polo 1.6 in transit! I was skeptical as i got varied (read funny and stupid) replies from both VW Helpline & dealers alike. After 2 days i went all the way to Gurgaon with my wife and was pleasantly surprised to see the delivery schedule. The rest is History my friend!

Will check the manufacturing date and confirm.

The left pulling was minor adjustment (toe adjustment) and the car is working fine now.

Polo 1.6 Red Devil...gets devilishly fast on the expressway!

That's exactly what i looked like just a couple of hours back! Took the car for a spin on the Greater Noida expressway to see what the Polo 1.6 is all about and i had a hard time trying not to floor the right foot!

It feels like it's driving at 70 while on 100 and feels 90-100 while at 140! I even overtook an Audi A4, Did a quick lane change at 100 and it was poised without feeling nervous! What a terrific handler the little red devils is. Seriously considering 205-55 R-15 Yokohamas for even more confidence at high speeds.

Check out the pics:
  1. 100 kmph @ 2200 rpm
  2. 140 kmph @ 3050 rpm
  3. Concentrating on the road
  4. and 145 kmph @ 3200 rpm
The best part is that the engine is not screaming like a puny 1.2 and is rather relaxed, even as the speed increases! Looking forward to go all the way upto the top speed in a few weeks (as soon as i log in a couple of thousand kms)
