Be serious, follow your heart - Honda Jazz

First things first; thank you Team-BHP, for the immense help in making the buy decision (+ subsequent buy process).

Last Friday, drove home a taffeta white Jazz after waiting 2+ years for a new car.

Love: super silent & smooth drive, gear-shift, top quality all around, looks, heavy car feel (?), stock audio.
Miss: electric fold mirrors, USB. I totally miss electric fold mirrors.

The Safari Story
In Aug-08 had suddenly quit my job to pursue a start-up dream. Over the next 1.5 years had to give up a lot of small/medium luxuries, but the first one was to cancel the booking of a Safari LX.

Things got a little desperate and I got into a regular job early this year.
With a regular paycheck, came back the buried "new car dream".

Tried getting a used Civic (inspired by GTO), but couldn’t get a nice one.
So, new fatty it will be.
Started visiting all Tata dealers to get the best price.

The jinx returns. Photos of a new Safari. Expected launch April-11.
If it’s going to be finished like Aria, it’s going to be awesome.

But we just can’t wait until April, knowing Tata, there will be delays.
And my current 2002 Alto has become so long in the tooth that it’s a tusk now.

The Large Hatch Story
Lets buy a large hatch that meets our needs for the next 2-3 years minimum and after that we get the fatty home.

Expectations:
- I am lazy. This means, service station visits only as per schedule.
- Don’t care about brand, especially in this price range. To me, a few lakhs here and there doesn’t make a social statement.
- Resale is important.

Shortlist: i20 Asta Petrol, GP E+ MJD, Jazz.
Why i20 Petrol, but GP Diesel? – coz it’s difficult to sell petrol Fiats.
Why not Fabia? – Skoda??
Why not Figo? - don’t like looks.
Why not Polo? – don’t know, didn’t like it, neither the cocky dealer. Waiting period.

After about 2-3 TDs each, eliminated i20.
- Despite electric mirrors….I miss I miss.
- Too many lines on the body & felt underpowered.
- Most important – I did not connect with the car. Can’t explain.

Finally, after 2 more TDs of GP & Jazz, decision was made.
We liked GP soooo much that, even after booking the Jazz we went for are-we-sure TD of the GP.
Dilemma was –
- I felt connected and happy in both these cars. Me as driver and the wife as passenger.
- Friends & colleagues would say – “Both options are useless, one’s overpriced and the other’s a Fait”. “Both are market failures”. “Who buys these cars?”. "C'mon, get the City"

Finally, interiors, passenger legroom & boot space confirmed our decision. Simply put, Jazz would hold-off the need of a sedan for much longer than the GP would.
The big discount also helped.

Purchase
Booked on Sunday, took delivery on (last) Friday with 35 km on odo.
Got the VIN checked by wildon, confirmed to be Nov-2010 make. (important since many dealers have much older stocks of Jazz sitting)
Did two rounds of checks, one before VIN assignment, second before delivery.

Issues:
Dealer did not give Honda Assure, saying that will cost extra. Offered me Reliance or ICICI, I chose ICICI.
Gave me hardly 1 liter of petrol, instead of promised 10 liters.

Freebies: Active kit (alloys & parcel tray) & spoiler. + usual stuff like mud flaps and carpets.

Need your inputs on the sunfilm – what brand, type/grade, costs & shop (in Bangalore).

thanks for reading.

Re: Be serious, follow your heart - Jazz

Congrats Lazy!! JAZZ is the best hatch with a little over price. Those who can afford Jazz are lucky!!! It's nice to drive rare cars like Jazz and Punto!

Re: Be serious, follow your heart - Jazz

Congratulations.

I have a Jazz too. Bought it in May this year. The Select edition. Paid 8.6 on road.

Got the side step garnish for the doors (all four, front 2 are lit up), fog lamps with the car.

I've done close to 7K kms. Mileage varies between 11 - 13.5 kmpl in city.

Highways best I've got so far is 18.4kmpl and worst is 13.7kmpl.

Third gear I've taken it up to 110kmph. Its smooth as silk.
Top end I've touched 140kmph so far.

Changed to K&N OE filter about 2k kms back. It does make a difference to the initial acceleration.

Ground clearance is bad.

All round visibility is excellent.

Have fun.

Regards
Ravi.

Re: Be serious, follow your heart - Jazz

Congrats and welcome to the jazz club!
tafeta white seems to be the fav color for jazz at least among the TBHPians.

Do post some pics and your initial driving experience.

Sunfilms - you can go for 3M CS series for sides and back, and 3M CR70 for the front. Cost will be around 9K I guess.

@iridium - Regarding the K&N filter, what is your experience? Is there perceptible difference in the performance. I guess the low and mid-range performance should have improved a lot. Is there any difference in the FE?

So far, done 125 kmph in 3rd and 185 kmph in the 5th. The car likes to be revved and it flies after 3000 rpm.

Enjoy your car and drive safe!

Re: Be serious, follow your heart - Jazz

Hey Lazy, Congrats on the great buy. I am in a similar dilemma. Its a shoot-out between i20 diesel Asta Vs Jazz for me. But slightly inclined towards Jazz!

How much did it cost on the road? Can you share the details of the deal?

Happy Driving.

Does K&N OE filter make a huge difference in initial acceleration and what are the effects on FE?

Excellent reasoning in the elimination process. Loved it!

Enjoy the car. I too love the Jazz but it is way out of my budget to be my next car.

Lazy: congrats for your Jazz. Drive safe mate. Think of upgrading to better tyres in the future. Will be a wise decision.

With regards to the GP MJD e+ who says its cheap? Almost 8 in Mumbai selling almost as the Jazz.

Not sure about the price in Mumbai, (8L is kinda big money) - however, its called cheap coz of the features it offers at that price. Nothing else.

Re: Be serious, follow your heart - Jazz

Congrats dude! It definitely is a 'premium feel' car
I agree with the cocky dealer part about VW. What is it about some cars that their dealers behave like this across the country? I have heard similar stories from other cities too.
pics please!
