Delhi to Leh (further till Nubra) & back on my Thunderbird

Part of the Himalayan Odyssey 2011.
2500+ kms covered in 12 days with about 100 hrs of saddle time.

Day 1: Delhi to Chandigarh
Day 2: Chandigarh to Manali
Day 3: Manali to Keylong
Day 4: Keylong to Sarchu
Day 5: Sarchu to Leh
Day 6: In Leh
Day 7: Leh to Hundar
Day 8: Hundar to Leh
Day 9: Leh to Debring
Day 10: Debring to Keylong
Day 11: Keylong to Ambala
Day 12: Ambala to Delhi

Passes crossed: Rohtang-la (13051 ft) , Nakee-la (15574 ft), Baralach-la (16040 ft), Lalchung-la (16615 ft), Tanglang-la (17582 ft), Khardung-la (18380 ft)

Day 0: Full of excitement, last minute checks, meeting fellow riders AND as always almost no sleep!

Day 1: Was up at 4.30 with hardly any sleep. Rule number 0 in a bikers life - went down the stairs to check the bike for any punctures, the motor started nicely and all seemed good. Went back to the room, got ready and came down at 6 to a hot cup of tea. Weather seemed to have listened to 72 (60 riders + crew + media) people and it became cloudy with a slight drizzle. The tee off for India Gate started from the Internantional Youth Centre in Chanakyapuri at 7.30.
72 riders in a 2X2 formation; REs thumping, lovely!
A small welcome and send off PR exercise for RE at India Gate and off we went around 8ish flagged off by Dr Venky (CEO of RE). A re-group 40 kms from Delhi for breakfast. Regroup for lunch and then finally received by RE dealer in Zirakpur. In the hotel in Chandigarh by 3 PM.

Day 2: to be updated.

Wow, excellent pictures of another Leh TL. When was this? Dates of travel along with Day numbers schedules would have helped. Waiting for further posts

PS : Just searched on google, was it from June 25 - July 10. I guess i saw some bikers on Leh and Khardung La together.

Hi Mayank - Thank you. Yes, it was 25 Jun 11 - 10 Jul 11. However, on the way back I headed from Keylong to Ambala-Delhi instead of Keylong-Kalpa-Kaza-Narkanda-Parwanoo-Delhi. Sure, soon to be updated!

PS: Mods can you please correct the spelling of T"h"uderbird in subject line?

Nitin
looking forward to read your travelogue.
One of my friend was also planing to be in your group. He had some fitness issues because of bad knees at last moment.

Did your group stick together all the way or had to regroup at various designated places?
Regard
Dinesh

This was Khardungla, officially the highest motorable pass (not technically though). The snow wall pic is Baralach la (a real toughie after Tanglang la). Wasnt sure which pic you were asking about.

Ask your friend to do it this year buddy. It's worth it! Yes we had regroups else it would have become difficult for the lead riders to ensure safety of the entire group - fast vs slow riders.
