Khajjiar- Switzerland of Himachal

I had been to Khajjiar this summer and it tryly lives up to its name- Mini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh. It is at a height of 6500 feet above sea level and surrounded by dense forests and green meadows.
The best way to enjoy Khajjiar is by doing nothing and just gazing at the idyllic pastoral scenery featuring a lake, grazing sheep & horses, pine and cedar forests and snowcapped mountains. There is Para Gliding and Horse Riding for the rest less!

A Discovery
Khajjiar was officially baptized as Mini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh by Mr. Willy t. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India on July 7, 1992! The Counselor also took from Khajjiar a stone which will form part of a stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to remind the visitors of Khajjiar as Mini Switzerland of India.

Tip for Stay
Khajjiar is best enjoyed by staying at the Khajji Cottage run by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Corporation Ltd. Have a look at the accompanying photograph. The setting is idyllic and perfect for a relaxing holiday far from the crowds.

Khajjiar enjoys an Alpine Summer from April till June and that’s the best period to plan a visit here. Monsoons follow from Jul-Sep. Khajjiar witnesses a bitter winter from November to February.

Reaching Khajjiar
Khajjiar is just 22 KMs from Dalhousie, the nearest major town. The nearest airport is at Gaggal, in Kangra 180 km away, while the nearest railhead is at Pathankot, 120 km away.

Lovely !! This place looks quite like Baisaran in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The grass was very finely trimmed as though someone had run a lawn mower over. Amazing meadows !!

Re: Khajjiar- Switzerland of Himachal

Beautiful pictures, and lovely place too. Hadn't heard of this place before and i am glad now i can see pictures of it and maybe plan a trip to this place.

Please post more pictures, and i am not sure why the pictures are coming small on the browser. Larger pictures will look better.

Maybe next Summer vacations i should plan a trip to Khajjiar. Any idea what's the winter temperature like?

Re: Khajjiar- Switzerland of Himachal

Thanks for the beautiful pics sudden!
I had been there some 8 years back during winter when the weather was dark and cloudy. You've been a lot luckier! Someone was complaining to me that the place has now lost its beauty due to too many hotels having come up all around the grassland but your pictures suggest otherwise.

We were there for a day about four years back. The place is very scenic, but the environ leaves a lot to be desired. Dog dung all over the place and it smells. Of course humans also litter all over. Peanut shells and worse.

I only wish it was maintained better, and people were more civil!

The place becomes crowded during holidays and weekends. I was lucky to be there on weekdays. On a weekday especially early mor or late eve, its is really beautiful with no soul on sight.

@sgiitk,
Add to it slush in the center. Amazing place brought down by sheer negligence.
Even I was there some 5-6 years back. Brings back lots of memories!

Re: Khajjiar- Switzerland of Himachal

Been there twice and the pictures are so very inviting that I won't mind going there again. Adding to it the drive to Chamba valley from Khajjiar..an experience you will never forget.

Re: Khajjiar- Switzerland of Himachal

Amazing Place. You have my eyes to your thread. Keep them coming.

As pointed out by earlier, its very sad people don't care to protect such a beautiful place. The same person who litters in India becomes careful when abroad. Not sure if punishment and penalty can help and I seriously don't think its possible for the local civic authorities to maintain unless people are cautious. Its not possible to keep a tab on everyone.
