Trip to JLR River Tern Lodge, Bhadra (August 13 - 15, 2011)

During the August 15th long weekend, we went to JLR's River Tern Lodge, Bhadra at Lakkavalli. This place is about 45+ kms before Shimoga and right on the banks of Bhadra reservoir. They have 25 rooms there, 10 on one hillock attached to the mainland and 15 on a island hillock.

The view from these rooms is breathtaking and each cottage has a great view into Bhadra reservoir.

Here are some snaps from this trip. Will upload more in the evening.

Nice teasers. Must be quite an experience in those lodge rooms on the hillock. The butterfly and moth are real nice catches. Looking for more.

Great shots! This is one of my favourite properties of Jungle Lodges. The views from the balconies are awesome. By the way, how's the road towards Lakkavalli these days, once you take a left from the SH?

Thanks canonguy. The roads towards Lakkavalli were decent. Considering that the time we went was the fag end of monsoon, they were parts/ patches that were bad, but in all the roads were decent.

muralisk...all the way amazing man, hats off. You got quite a hand at snapping. The butterflies, moths, birds, and those waw dragonflies, just spellbound. Must admit you make the Red Mud look beautiful. You must have immense patience to catch all these. Those Eagle and the bird flights are nicely caught. Do they have Jungle Safari in Jipsy or you have to take your own vehicle inside?Looking at the tracks, dont think they would allow personal vehicles though.

Wow, you went in the rainy season and still saw more animals than we did in dry season. In my trip 3 years back, we only got to see birds and birds.

Thanks parsh, I am glad you liked my shots. Yes, JLR has a guided Jeep and boat safari's and the drivers are quite knowledgeable and does spot these birds/ reptiles and animals very well. And no, they don't allow private vehicles as these are reserve forests.

Thanks to you for sharing such wonderful creatures and shots. I couldn't get anything even closer to this in my trips to Gir, Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh and Kanha yet, just could get a couple of them, and spotting was a big problem too. Luck is definitely one part but one also needs to act at jet speed to capture such shots even if you spot these things. Keep them coming if you have more.

Re: Trip to JLR River Tern Lodge, Bhadra (August 13 - 15, 2011)

Amazing pics, muralisk!
We are planning to visit River Tern lodge next week (5-7 Nov).

1. Which camera is it- and can you get the butterflies with a 250mm zoom?
2. How much time would the travel take? My friend, who had gone earlier, says he took 8 hrs.... but couple of posts in tripadvsor says 5 hours!
3. Can you suggest us any good stopover restaurant- firstly for breakfast and then later, may be , for a coffee?
4. Shall I go for old or new (in the island) huts? Which ones has good view?

Thanks-

Bumping into a old thread.

Is it possible to visit the JLR river tern lodge and take the boat ride, jeep ride and have food without staying. Stay is quite expensive.

Any ideas . Await replies.

I went there in December 2013, doubt if such an option is available. Just call and talk to them.

The boat ride was at 6 AM in the morning and the safari was in the evening. I would not recommend the safari as we could not spot anything other than deer and elephant, that too far away. Boat ride was decent. The highlight of the place is the view from the cottage. Food is just average.

Thanks mate. Wifey is from Chikmagalur and she hates staying at an expensive resort closer home as she is used to the usual hills & plantations. So, I was just thinking of doing a day trip just for safari, boat ride & some play time for the kids. I will call and check with JLR for options.

Saw this TL bump up and got reminded of my visit some 4 years back. Witnessed some amazing colours here in the month of October. Posting a few here.

During the morning boat ride

Though there were many birds, I did not have the lens to shoot them. This is the best I could manage with a 70-200.
