Aloha from Hawaii - a photologue

Hi there, I had the fortune of spending 2 weeks in Honolulu In July this year. Was at the University of Hawaii at Manoa doing a course and with me were 22 other students from 14 countries. Mostly Asia Pacific region but 4-5 of them were from Honolulu itself so I had great exposure to the island since we were mobile and they had local knowledge. Classes were from 8 am to 4 pm and then we were out, hiking, surfing or checking out Waikiki.
Little background, Ohau is one of 5 islands in the chain where the capital Honolulu is located. The biggest Island is "big Island" which has an active volcano on it. Local inhabitants are Japanese and Polynesians. Unfortunately I had to fly Delhi Newark Los Angeles Honolulu and back the same way. Flying time 26 hrs
Now let the pics talk..

Shopping at the International shopping center in Waikiki, looks a bit like Calangute, Goa. This place is expensive, walk 1/2 km around and prices are more real.

There are quite a few homeless folks around in Honolulu. here is one with all his possessions in a strolly. In China town saw a whole line of similar folk waiting for a freehouse to open in the evening.

This is the fun here. Almost everybody takes to surfing, I tried my hand and it was not too difficult to manage for a few seconds before I tumbled off, felt like I was in a washing machine.

The weather here is fantastic, cool, not humid and occasional shower. The closer to the hills on the East more rain, away from the hills and it is dry. Throughout the year.

Re: Aloha from Hawaii - a photologue

The last set of pics.
Few things I observed on the driving there. Fantastic discipline lane, speed, parking all rules observed, with patience.
Honda Fit quite common, corolla very common, Prius common, Petrol is the fuel of most vehicles incl bigger SUV types.
Single driver (occupant) vehicles are so common, they encourage sharing of vehicles by making left most lane (fast lane) ONLY for cars with more than 1 occupant.

And finally a panorama of Dole plantation where pineapples are grown.

Thanks guys, it surely merits a visit BUT it is expensive, more than US mainland and Waikiki more than the rest of Hawaii. 95% of their stuff comes by sea. Fuel is almost the same cost as mainland.
Surprisingly, all hotels except 1/2 are located in Waikiki only.
Rajesh I have loads of pics but I put up the most representative of the lot. a video of a drive through the Pali tunnel is in store.

Thanks guys. FYI camera Panny FZ 35 with CPL filter, making the blue sky more saturated. Sorry for the delay as I was out of town with data card only. Here are some more pics. The course was "health emergencies in large populations" dealing with health issues related to displaced people and refugees.

you are welcome. There are two active volcanoes in "big island" and volcano tourism is a big thing there. Kilauea and Mauna Loa are the names of the volcanoes. BTW Hawaian language has only 14 alphabets and of them 5 are vowels so each vowel is pronounced separately, like this kila-oo-e-ah and ma-oo-na l-oo-ah
