Why is it that almost all Gompa's have two antelopes look at a wheel as the emblem? -

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-dsc_2617.jpg

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-dsc_2618.jpg
I can't but keep thinking about the similarity it has with Onathappan / Thrikkakara appan - which in Kerala is used alongside the floral decorations during Onam. This structure represents Vamana - an incarnation of Vishnu. It is a pyramid with four faces depicting four stages of life of a man.

Copyright of the above picture lies with respective owners. Used here only to represent the case in point.
Please tell me more about all these if you know. There's a lot to learn!

Another view - The structure looks a lot like the vilakku in south India

Re: HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)

To add to what Lalu has said, let me give you some more info:

- Khibber used to be the highest motorable village in the world. On an earlier visit, villagers told me that temperatures dip to as low as (-) 35 C

- The Chichim road has been under construction for some years now, and from there I believe it will link up to Hanse village on the Kaza-Losar road.

- Nowadays, gompas have started charging fees for entry

- Most of the important rooms in gompas are locked up since they have lots of precious paintings and ancient manuscripts, besides gold idols, etc, so whenever you go, someone opens it up and shows you around.

- Lalu, the similarities with symbolism in Tibetan and Kerala religious ritual/ festivals are striking, am sure that they are all bonded by the same origins and belief! Sharp of you to point out the similarities.

The interesting thing about Kaza is, that if you take the road upto Kaumic, you get some real nice green meadows, with stunning views.
I found these backdoor villages much more scenic as compared to standard tourist locations.

Yes, I agree with you. It is a surreal experience to be climbing up beyond Langza and reaching the plateau with the snow peaks suddenly coming closer. I loved it, and we were the only people around except for some pea farmers gathering their produce and awaiting the collection trucks!
