Spiti Sortie (8-11 Mar 2012)

Folks,

Simple plan - Ride as far as possible into Spiti - ideally upto Nako or such on day 2.

Broad plan:
8 Mar - ride out early morning (like 2am). Try and get as far as possible. Jeori would be the ideal stop, and Rampur is okay.
9 Mar - Reach as much into Spiti and chill out (stop for the day by 3pm).
10 Mar - Ride as far back as possible. Narkanda is the targeted stop for the day.
11 Mar - easy ride home, touch hatu if possible, else delhi border by 5pm.

Oh and did I mention the missus? She's coming as pillion. jalva is joining in on his CBR with his missus as well.

The plan is for a mostly boringly hectic ride-ride with a fairly disciplined riding day that starts at 7am and least possible breaks. This is not a count-the-butterflies or shutterbugs' ride.

Thanks. Actually i'm not taking the car up there till I get some rally mods done on it including sump guard and such like. This is 4 days, so much more convenient to take a bike up there and explore!

You can easily do Nako on second day and chill out for that day, i suggest walk around the place, do some trekking and then start back around 12 the next day, Nako is a beautiful place i could stay there for weeks

Looks like a ride, ride and ride holiday. Been eons since I did one like this. Would love to hear the tale and see some clicks.

Happy and safe riding.

Thanks to everyone for their wishes. It was interesting. We went till 6 km short of Puh (?) but ice had come down and it was impassable for a two wheeler. In the end we managed Gurgaon - Jalori - Puh return to Kalpa - Gurgaon. Jalva was a stud and his CBR flew all through. Our bike had aged and was plagued by electrical unreliability and non-existent shockers (the wife was troubled no end!).

Here's the pictures.
The ice wall.

Other clicks enroute to Puh:

The morning scenes next day at Kalpa (took 15 min+ choke to start).

CBR saying - No - I don't want to go anywhere. Can't you read my lips?

Ice Vistas (all melted by 11am):

The mountains (sorry, I had 18-55 only, no zoom!)

Then we got late riding onto Narkanda and took almost an hour for the last km or so. Why? See for yourself. The wife walked up - I was half afraid of getting crushed by a skidding truck (many such folks passed us).

In sum and substance - its worth visiting in winter if your bike is in shape. Summer cannot even come close to such vistas

Re: Spiti Sortie (8-11 Mar 2012)

If we were to drive from Delhi to the Spiti Valley in mid April, What all areas would be inaccessible? I havent done any research on the Spiti circuit yet. Was just trying too see what would be the best way to spend a week's break in April.
Was thinking of just driving around and going to Old Manali or Dharamsala. But now feel adventurous. Thinking of renting a Zoom Scorpio so that should help us reach places.

Thanks

Not really sure this year, but in 2012, we were told that most of Spiti would be open around April (from Shimla side).

as for a vehicle - the predominant vehicle in those parts is the humble Alto carrying entire families returning back to Spiti.
