Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

How can I resist myself commenting on the thread. Great pics, and nice timing.

I was born in a place near Harshil, which is my ancestral village.

Though my dad worked in a bank in Uttarkashi town and have a house there, school holidays were spent in Harshil. Spent most of my years in Uttarkashi town before settling down here .

During my teens had trekked to Gaumukh( 18KM trek from Gangotri) twice , and the experience had been mind blowing.

On one occasion, stayed in a dhaba owned by a relative for some days in cheerbasa en-route to Gaumukh. Use to cook and serve tea there to all kinds of trekkers and had great fun interacting with them.

I started driving recently and ultimate aim is to take my car to Gangotri , hopefully by end of this year

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

Great travelogue, nicely written coupled with some awesome pictures. Your truck looks awesome in the picture with picture perfect background.

I must say gangotri surely looks beautiful in the pictures, i used to think that it is just another pilgrim place with lots of crowd etc, but the above pictures completely changed my mind.

I will surely visit this place once i buy myself a 4WD truck, as this type of terrain is a strict no-no for a sedan.

Thanks alot for posting the log, Do post more pictures if you have.

Cheers,
Sameer

Day 3 #6 : The journey back begins

It did not really snow. We ate, wa lazed around. Tilak left, so did the taxi arranged for others, but we stayed put till half past two.
Some snowflakes felt, but not really snowfall.

Eventually, we with our troupe of passengers, moved on. It was almost 3 now.

The road was icy and trecherous. The other had an hour of headstart.

At 3 we caught up with the others. They had hardly gone a few kms.
The road ahead was blocked, with a BRO truck.
We park and walk to see whats up
Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri-dsc3919lrl.jpg

The truck is 2WD, with bald tires, and carrying ballot boxes for the upcoming state election.

There is a lot of commotion
Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri-dsc3920lrl.jpg

The truck does not have any snow chains or shovels. And it cannot climb on those bald tires. Quite funny, if you are not in a hurry.

Tilak lends them his showel, and after an agonizing wait, we are on the move again.

Dark clouds threaten to erupt in the promise of snowfall, but its just light snowflakes

The river Ganga, and the ice road

It looks icier today

Some hairpins have now white cover, but the black ice is actually more dangerous

ITs quarter to 4 as we near sukhi top, and come to our next obstacle. However, the views are gorgeous

Lovely pics Tanveer..

I really miss staying near the mountains whenever I go through your travelogues.

With all rights to the you, I have made some of your pics as my wallpapers and screen savers, please forgive me for that.

Did u put any anti freeze or any other additive in your WE diesel to prevent it from freezing at these temp?

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

Absolutely amazing travelogue, its a pleasure to read and see the photos! The pics are very enticing, makes you feel like going there immediately.

The only scary part is that in some places, you can't make out where the road curves due to the snow; if you miss a turn, don't know where you will end up

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

Great to see the WE back in it's domain, with wings attached!

As usual, your (awesome) pics have taken me somewhere else and I'm loving it. It's been a big time desire of mine to explore UK during winters and your log has just given a boost to it.

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

Hi Tanveer...
Really nice article and awesome pics. I wanted to know if you needed to engage 4x4 during the trip. Do you think a 2WD can take the snowy curves, inclines, stretches? By a 2WD, I mean an "SUV" . (Something like a Renault Duster, which sadly is going to be just a 2WD in our country!!)

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

As usual a superb travelogue from Tanveer.

I enjoyed reading all your past TLs but this is just mind-blowing. Your pictures talk more than your words and they are just fabulous.

From your photographs it makes us feel the power of mother nature and how small we are in front of her.

Eagerly waiting for more pics from this trip

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

simply stunning, my morning started with this thread and the serene pics you posted here. Awesome I must say, I went to Gangotri in 1996 infact covered a whole lot of places then, Yamunotri-Gangotri-Kedarnath-Badrinath-Auli Garwal-Haridwar-Rishikesh-Agra, but like what Aniket da mentioned, it was peak pilgrim season and swamped with humans all around.
I am sure in winter as deserted it may look, as beautiful it gets... I wish I own a 4x4 soon enough.

Re: Soaring with the eagles : The ice road to Gangotri

All your travelogues have been fantastic and a lot of them have snow and they make my eyes

Beautiful and in many pictures it looks like it is just you and your safari. Is driving over the ice without snow-chains safe? Did the safari do ice-skating at any point?

Briliant job Tanveer and thanx again for pitching in for the help , brought back a smile on my face .
That haunted bridge is "Wilson's bridge" Hope you recall from the bonfire talks from a night prior to the Gangotri visit stories.
Keep going as I am hooked on to the narration
