HVK took details about Mughal route and also about Gurez. We were advised not to go to Gurez since there was a bandh and a shoot out the previous day. Mughal route was given a green signal by the taxi guys.

Day 5
27 - July - 2012

After lunch we decided to get a new tyre for the Scorpio.

After spending a few hours waiting for the tyre to arrive listening to funny conversation between HVK and the tyre dealer we left to get the tyre fitted.

One interesting conversation between HVK and the Tyre fellow went like this.

HVK : I need tubeless tyre
Tyre dealer : No problem I will take out the tube and give you tubeless

After fitting the tyre we reached Dal Lake back by 19:00 hours.

Suddenly two traffic cops jump out of nowhere and asks us to stop. HVK showed all documents and toll tickets. Every document was in order. The cops did not like that. They started finding fault like the number plate is muddy and not visible etc..etc.. and started harassing. Finally they left only after taking some money. It was intriguing to see the traffic cops splitting the money in front of us and putting in their pockets.

So much so for an outstation vehicle. Instead of welcoming the tourists and helping them these low lifes are resorting to such acts. It's a shame for such a place.

We put the incident behind us and got ourselves a room in Hotel Malik overlooking Dal Lake.

Sad yet reality. Not just in J&K but mostly every state in our country is in the same condition w.r.t outside vehicles and foreigners. And then we say
"Athithi Dhevo Bhava" I guess the police understands it as
"Athithi Diyo (mumbai colloquial hindi for "do" - give!) bhava (Telugu its father, correct?)" = Begging! (bhagwan ke naam pe dede baba! style!)

Not insulting the people who are really poor and are forced to beg, but only nitpicking on the corrupt Police and other such low lifes.

@HVK and @laluks - Hats off for sucha thrilling commentary and documentation of this arduous trip. Tofu kubul karo jahanpanah!

Simply loved the TL and scared stiff on those cliffhanger roads. No way, I am thinking, and I see the video showing the vehicle speed to be around 30kmph!

Loved many parts so far.
1. How HVK upset the hafta collection at the Rajasthan border with "Docs kyon dikaoun" and riding away unscathed.Bravo, boss.

2. The scenery was mindblowing. The greens almost blinded me. Sure, there is no HDR/auto touchups on these gorgeous pics?
@Laluks - simbly awesome and inspired by Kunfu Panda - There is no charge strike strike.. price for such awsomeness.

3. The nick for HVK should stick. Indeed - he surely is the High Voltage Kumar - The human GPS

4. A company like Mahindra is so damn stupid, that they do not see the diamond in this man and his machine and his magellan travels all over India. Either those idiots have no clue or they have their noses buried in the ground like ostriches.

5. The conversational format was superb. The explanation which differentiated the driving holiday vis-a-vis the laid back version, could not have been succinctly put even though both have a different mission.

6. Yeah, I just wished you guys did have the chai-bhajjiya like any Mumbaikar would.

7. The maggie atop the summit, is a classic. Should send it Amitabh Bachchan for the Maggie stories, since he is looking for one.

Thanks a lot and look forward for more.

My mind has become like Bomman Irani's in Munnabhai MBBS - Shivers in the spine like a Hitchcock novel and blissful wilting in the fresh air of the magnificent Himalayan landscapes.
