Re: 7 Days in Heaven : The Ladakh Escapade!!

Firstly, I would like to thank Team-BHP team for approving my membership. This is my first post.

@MadBiker - I have heard some good reviews about ARIA. How was the vehicle's overall performance?
Beautiful pictures. I have just started my interest in Photography and after going through your posts I feel I have a lot to learn.
Do you mind sharing the details of the camera and lens used?

Hi,

Thanks for the compliments.

The Car was good, But not great. It had good torque range - but power delivery was not enough in many inclines. For a normal family, it is very spacious and interiors were decent enough.

I used a Canon 40D + Tokina 12-24 and a Canon 500D + Canon 70-200 F2.8 L combo for the trip.

We stopped by The Magnetic Hill, the place which people claim that the road defies gravity. There were a lot of cars stopping by, taking pictures of signboards and surroundings. Nothing really happened to defy gravity and we knew it.
I am surprised! I have lived there for 4 years and seen this innumerable times. Basically, at the spot where the road is painted, there's a slight incline. If you park your vehicle in neutral and release the handbrake, the vehicle moves up the slope. I have heard explanations that the magnetite content in the nearby hill is many times over normal and hence the phenomenon. The movement is slow but definite, almost at the pace at which two people would normally push a vehicle.

Just to quote Wikipedia..

Quote:
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_Hill_(India)

Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference. In reality, the effect is an optical illusion and there is no magnetic disturbance in the area at all.
It seems like a incline, But it is not. Rather the road goes down. Now they have relaid the road, and the same is clearly visible.

Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. But definitely not anything magnetic in my opinion. Just my opinion

Thanks for reading !

will have to check this one next time I'm there. I don't know about the road re-laying part, but there was a definite incline (or else an excellent optical illusion)

you may be right, but then I guess i have had a 100% hit rate so far
BTW, there are other places like this much publicised one the world over.Aircraft and ships are forced to avoid these places or disregard the readings of the magnetic compass altogether eg In India itself, just off Grandi Island, Goa is a place called buffalo rock which makes your magnetic compass erratic (A documented fact and included in the 'advise to mariners'). this is again due to Iron ore.
while I have not read anything like this with respect to the 'magnet hill', I just thought this explanation might be plausible.

Thank You!

Good Luck for your Ladakh trip - Just be prepared - You never know when Ladakh calls you!

P.S: I tried around ~ 4 years to goto Leh, But only the 5th year i managed to ride down (In 2010). So be patient, the opportunity will come soon.
