My friends had been to Mekedatu few weeks back, and their suggestions helped me shortlist Mekedatu for a weekend trip.

Travelers: Me and Wifey
Ride: Maruti Ritz VXI

Weekend Trip to Mekedatu-mekedatu_10.jpg

We started at about 9 AM on a Sunday morning. We went through Mysore road, then joined Kanakapura road, and then went to Kanakapura. Once in Kanakapura, there is a sign that directs one toward Sangam. It's required to take a left at this junction. However when we went there, the road was being repaired, and we were guided through alternate roads by locals.

We stopped by at "Paul's Hut" in Kanakapura road. This is a nicely maintained restaurant and the price is reasonable. We had an early lunch here, and packed food for our journey further.

The road from Kanakapura to Sangam is in bad shape, and it looks like repair work is in progress, since a major portion of this road was covered by gravel. By the time we reached Mekedatu it was almost 1 PM. We parked our car outside the KSTDC hotel gate. Parking is free here, and there is ample parking space available. We never tried the food at KSTDC hotel, but it is decent enough according to my friend who visited this place earlier.

From the parking lot, one needs to walk to the bank of the river. The Sangam can be actually seen from here. It's the place where river Arakavathy meets river cauvery. It is necessary to go to the other end of the river via carocles. There is no other option available. It costs 50 bucks per person for a return trip in the carocle. After crossing to the other end of the river, one need to go the "Mekedatu" place in the private buses that keep plying the island regularly. They charge 50 bucks for a return trip, and the buses are in extremely bad shape. It's suggested to sit at the front portion of this bus. The journey to Mekedatu in the bus takes about 20-25 minutes.

Few snaps of Mekedatu:

Note: Do carry your own lunch and water bottle to Mekedatu. Only biscuit, chips, mineral water, and soft drinks are available for a high price in Mekedatu.

Some more snaps captured at random locations during the journey:

Hi Scorpion,
Thanks for the nice little travelogue.
Your Ritz looks good with the scenic backdrop.
Beautiful photographs.
Good to know that repair works are being done on Sangam Road.

We travelled on Oct 2nd to the same place! When the day is observed as alcohol free everywhere, it was very easily available there. There are areas strewn with glass pieces on the bank and saw atleast two people getting bloody cuts.

Fortunately for us, when we visited the bank was clean. There were no glass pieces or garbage around. The tourism department can really improve this place. There are so many visitors during weekends and holidays, and still the place is in such bad condition.

I think you crossed the river and took the bus to Mekedatu. If you walk along the bank there are lot of glass pieces. It doesnt look like they have cleaned the place for a long time. Even the shelters built for a picnic kind of things are totally neglected.
But for king of good times being available on Oct 2nd takes the cake for law enforcement, who cares attitude and lethargy in our country. Most deaths have occurred here when intoxicated people take to water.

How many kms are there from Bangalore to Mekedatu.

The distance is about 100 kms. You'll have to reach Kanakapaura, and then take a deviation toward "Sangama". Just check your tyre pressure before you start. The road toward Sangama from kanakapura (first few kms) was in bad shape when I went. The road was full of loose stones and gravel.
