Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Day 6: 3rd June. Next day our plan was to drive to Munsiyari from Kausani after breakfast.
Woke up early to view the sunrise. Took some snaps from the balcony of KMVN.

The scene was very beautiful. Breakfast was complimentary. After breakfast we checked out from KMVN and got our luggage loaded.

Our route plan was to go via Baijnath-Bageshwar-Kapot-Dana-Tejam-Birthi-Munsiyari as it was suggested by Google Maps. The road till Bageshwar was good but as we moved towards Kapot we could understand that this was not the route followed by other local travellers. Actual route was to go back to Almora from Bageshwar then go via Kaluwa Khan.

We decided to move on. The road was completely broken and went via severe landslide zones. Figo did well with full load.

There were some places where my wife had to get down and check the road ahead. The experience was out of the world as the road seemed to touch the sky in some places. If anyone wants to travel through this route it is suggested to travel in a group of atleast two cars and during the day.

It took us around 5 hours to reach Birthi Falls. We had our lunch at Birthi KMVN. The food was not as good as we expected from KMVN.

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

It was 4 pm and it had rained an hour back. Just when we reached Kalamuni Temple we were all spellbound by the clear view of Panchachuli peak. The scene was captivating.

I wanted to stay here for some time and enjoy the view but others suggested first to reach the destination and then enjoy. From Munsiyari the view was supposed to get closer.

We reached Munsiyari at 5:00 pm and checked in a KMVN Munsiyari. Our plan was to stay here for 3 nights. After having tea we walked around in the campus and enjoyed the sunset.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_0899.jpg
The food was not good and the rooms did not have clear view. I would rather not suggest KMVN Munisyari to others.
The next two days we did not get any clear view of the peaks.

Excellent excellent excellent photos of Panchachuli! That too in June!
You are indeed lucky to have got clear views during your short sojourn here.

IIRC, the other place to get grand views is from the edge of the hill on which sits the ancient Nanda Devi Temple.

Allow me to share a couple of snaps from yesteryear, october 2011 to be precise.

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Loved reading through your travelogue.

We did a road trip to that region this Dushera. If someone is travelling in that side, another route to Munsyari from Bageshwar is via Chaukori -> Thal -> Tejam -> Munsyari.

This route is much shorter than going all the way back to Almora then via Kaluwa Khan. This route is quite good except a few rough patches here and there. Of course, if coming from Nainital / Bhimtal side, then Almora -> Kaluwa Khan route is the one to take.

Next day we went to Nanda Devi Temple and drove again to Birthi Falls. There is only one re-filling station in Munsiyari and that too doesn’t have diesel most of the time. It is highly recommended to refill in Bageshwar.

Day 8: 5th June, We actually started to get bored in Munsiyari hence planned to move to Chaukori early in the morning and enjoy there.

The road via Thal is actually the road suggested by local drivers. The road condition was good. We reached Chaukori at 11:00 AM. Checked in at KMVN Chaukori. The food in Chaukori was not as good as that of Kausani. We enjoyed our stay in Chaukori and explored the surroundings by walking around.

We found Ojaswi Resort just behind KMVN to be the best with nice rooms and better view. I would rather suggest this resort than KMVN.
Our stay was for a night in Chaukori but we enjoyed here more than in Munsiyari.

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Hello lovecars21 ,

Awesome snaps - enjoying your travelogue. Got a few queries, which can help me in planning this road trip next week.

1. Have you considered Allahabad > Unchahar > Raebareli > Lucknow via NH24B? I heard from other bhpians about this road.
2. Have you noticed any decent staying options at Sitapur or Shahjahanpur with car parking facility ?

I am all set to start for this trip over coming weekend. Instead of starting from Kolkata on Saturday morning, I am plnning to start by Friday afternooon around 3 and stay at Dhanbad for the night. The primary reason for taking this decision is my mom is 60+ and thought of giving her some rest on day1 instead for a real long haul. Otherwise, I would have planned for Kolkata > Allahabad on day1.
Day 2 for me would be Dhanbad to Sitapur / Shajahanpur and Day 3 to reach Mukteshshwar by noon.

Unfortunately I didn't know about Ojaswi Resort in Munsyari, which you've mentioned and booked at KMVN, both at Chaukori and Munsyari.

Thanks,
Abhijit

Thanks,

Abhijit

Hi Abhijit,

Yes, you can surely take the route via Unchahar-Raebareli to Lucknow from Allahabad. The route is fine. Just because election results had come out a week before so we didn't want to go via Raebareili.

Please go via Sitapur-Kheri-Gola-Puranpur-Pilibhit-Sitarganj-Haldwani to avoid the pathetic roads via Bareilly while driving from Lucknow to Mukteshwar.

While driving through Sitapur and Shahjahanpur we didn't find any good staying options.

Avoid going via Shahjahanpur.

Ojeswi resort is in Chaukori. KMVN is not too bad but considering better option to stay at reasonable price its better.

Best wishes for your trip.

Regards,
Arunasish

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Day 10: 7th June, As per scheduled itinerary we had to travel from Chaukori to Kathgodam via Nainital.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-day-10-chaukori-kathgodam-via-nainital.jpg

We started from Chaukori at 8:00 AM and took the route via Binsar and Almora. The road was scenic with forest fire all around.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_1162.jpg
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_1164.jpg
Reached Binsar at around 11:00 AM and after a short halt moved towards Nainital. Our plan was to have lunch at Nainital. Night stay was booked at Kathgodam due to unavailability of rooms in KMVN Nainital/Bhimtal.
The road was much better than that of Kapot and Dana. We reached Nainital at 2:00pm due to congested roads of Almora. While entering Nainital the road was full of Delhi crowd going for weekend. I was shocked to see their sense of driving on Ghat roads.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_1172.jpg
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_1173.jpg
Once we reached Nainital the toughest job was to find a place to park our vehicle. After an hour of fighting around we got a place near the Nainital Lake. We had to walk for a kilometre to find a proper restaurant. By the time we ordered for lunch we were half dead. Asked the waiter to serve whatever was ready within 5 minutes else we would collapse.
The waiter was good enough to arrange within 5 minutes a proper non-veg thali with curd. After having our lunch we went straight to the lake to enjoy the cool breeze of the mountain lake. No doubt the lake is beautiful but the city is too congested and crowded for a holiday.

Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-dsc_1180.jpg
At around 4:00 pm we left for Kathgodam. The road was perfect but was full of mad Delhi traffic. Reached Kathgodam to find that KMVN had arranged for a Non-AC room with 4 bed.
Alas! Coming down from the Mountains, Kathgodam was scotching with heat. We cancelled our booking but they denied refund. My Mom and MIL suggested that we should rest properly as we had a long drive scheduled for the next day. Searched for half an hour and finally got a proper hotel(Relax Inn) with decent AC rooms. Shifted our baggage and relaxed. We had a long day!

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Day 11: 8th June, Kathgodam to Lucknow was our plan but our experience of the road via Bareilly was haunting us. We did some research with localities and decided to go via Pilibhit, Gola, Kheri and Sitapur. Packed our breakfast and drove off.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-return-kathgodam-lucknow.jpg

The road was much better and we sailed towards Sitapur. Reached Sitapur at 1:00 PM and had our lunch at a road side dhaba. Food was good with taste of “UP ka acchar”. Reached Lucknow at 3:00 PM and checked into our hotel which we had booked through MMT. After taking some rest we went to Dr. Ambedkar Park. The temperature in Lucknow on that day was around 46 deg C. Outside the date of the park some kids were selling mineral water bottles in which the water was frozen. We bought one and asked him as to how will we drink the water. He smiled and said, “Wait for 15 minutes and you will get the answer by yourself”. Within ten minutes the ice had melted completely! Entry ticket was Rs.10/- each. The beauty of the monument was way beyond words but we could not enjoy much as the heat was unbearable.

Got back to our car and turned the AC to full and sat for a while before moving on. Did some quick research and finalized on Tunday Kababi as our restaurant for dinner.
We found a Bengali waiter and he immediately could understand that we were from Bengal. We had a quick chit chat with him and he was surprised to hear that we had driven all the way. We ordered for delicious Galawati kabab and parathas. On the bill we found he had arranged for a 30% discount and we had to pay just Rs.350/- . Bid farewell to him and gave him a small token as thanks.
Next day our schedule was to drive from Lucknow to Varanasi.

Re: Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park

Day 12: 9th June, Checked out from Hotel at 8:00 am. The route was via Sultanpur and Jaunpur, a total of 300 kms.
Kumaon roadtrip from Asansol (WB), via Jim Corbett National Park-lucknow-varanasi-return.jpg
This was the route through which the Lucknow-Varanasi buses plied. The roads had some potholes but were negotiable. We reached Varanasi at 1:00 PM and had our lunch on the outskirts of the city. Varanasi as usual was full of rickshaws and buffaloes. The city was included in the itinerary on request from the seniors. Stayed in a Hotel which was 10 minutes walking distance from Kashi Vishwanath Temple but had to park our car in a nearby Big Bazaar.
In the evening we went to witness the spectacular holy Aarti of River Ganga. Booked a Boat for Rs.900/- including guide.

Last day of our trip. We woke up to the alarm of our Mobiles at 6 o’clock. Took a quick bath and called up our guide. He guided us to the Mandir were we offered puja.
After Pujas we did the second round of shopping and then went back to our hotel. After having lunch we packed our bags. At around 1:00 pm we check out from the hotel. Reached Asansol at 8:30 pm.

Amazing pictures. We went to Binsar and the places around in 2011 December but never wrote a TL. After seeing your travelogue I thank myself for not writing one as the pictures I had taken would look like garbage compared to these. BTW you took a long time to finish the log :-)

Btw , in the last post with the day wise summary, would it be possible to put in the approx time it took for each leg?

You can get the details of travel time from the TL. Still if you wish to get the details in one post I can get it for you.

Sorry for the delay in completing the TL. As soon as the holiday ended work load crashed on me.
