Re: Chernobyl - A city forgotten by time

Superb TL. All I can say is Thanks !! Thank you for taking us to a place hardly seen by anyone & giving us such a great guided tour.

Your friend is an excellent photographer & has captured the abandoned town very well.

I am sure the real experience would have been surreal.

And yes, you should write more TLs

Regards,

Pawan

Man! What a Tlog. One of a kind. Sure you would have had one amazing time over there. This is not my regular stop but seeing your title made me read your Tlog in one single stretch. Rated *****.

Reminds me of this movie (Chernobyl Diaries). It was so creepy seeing the place, I can imagine how it would have felt seeing it in person. Am sure you would have seen/heard about the movie. Hope you saw the movie before going there - If so, oh it would have been a chiller .

Rating it 5 stars. One of the unique places to travel to and unique travelogue in team bhp. I think Hemant Anand mentioned that reading this gave goosebumps and it is so really true that i too experienced it.

Trust a Malayali to choose Chernobyl for a vacation!!!

Seriously, a riveting photologue there. Truly captures the tragedy of the human condition.

Re: Chernobyl - A city forgotten by time

This is a trip like no other, hope I can also make it sometime. Watched the videos posted on this thread and they are staggering to say the least. Its evident that this a thriving commercial venture for the locals, and in no small measure due to the fact that the former Soviet republics are not as prosperous as their west European counterparts. The guides are savvy and strike the right balance between striking an ominous note about the contamination while insisting that its safe at the same time, but only if you follow their lead! The photographs are striking and I could not help but wonder how some of the artifacts, especially the school text and notebooks, seem so well preserved considering that they were abandoned in the now derelict classrooms.

Long term exile penalty to human beings for excessive fiddling with nature.

Nature has reclaimed its due !

Had gone through this thread long time back.
Recently saw HBO Web Series - Chernobyl and immediately remembered this thread.
I read it once again from page 1.

Came across an interesting video about the Russian Woodpecker (mentioned in Post#6 in this thread).

Check it out if interested

Re: Chernobyl - A city forgotten by time

@TheInterceptor: excellent TLog, superb details, lovely pictures.

Oct-2018 I was on a solo multi-city trip - Antalya, Istanbul, Kiev, Yeravan. Kiev is a lovely city, and I did visit the Chernobyl site. Interestingly, both Kiev and Yeravan has many Indian students, medical stream being one of top.

Hope you dont mind if I post of my Chernobyl Tour specific pics:

I booked that trip via SoloEast (tourkiev.com), superb operators:

many robots and machines were built to transport and tackle the situation:

It has been occasionally reported that some "ill adventurous" people go deep inside the area just to have a "isolated party". Such area are really not safe, and radiation levels could be high. The tour guide explains to keep walking on the designated path, and not venture sideways, and many times shown radiation levels different even inches apart on the 'regular' path. Some information about radiation within the trip : https://www.chernobyl-tour.com/about_radiation_en.html

As of today, within the exclusion zone, there are few families still staying there - they have their own reasons to stay :

In Kiev, I was staying just 5 min away from the Independence Square, and at night the musical fountains and overall ambiance was really awesome.

Pranav
