Thank you buddy , thouroughly enjoyed the trip with you. Slowly getting obsessed with that region, sure will make it. Commendable to be able to remember so well and pen it after 5 years.

how much would you rate the difficulty level of Lahual and Spiti for an experienced rider?
Roads are nice in this region. There is a small patch of the road before and after Kunzum pass, which is a bit difficult. The road to Rohtang pass is notorious for heavy traffic jam and brown chocolaty mud and slush. This circuit can be done easily by any motorcycle.

Thanks manjumon.
Actually, I visited this region twice after this trip. Moreover, I always help friends to design their itinerary and other preparations. So, I am very much familiar with this region.

Re: Lahaul and Spiti : A Photologue

Amazing travelogue. You really gave us an immersive experience. Thanks for that. I did ladakh last year and not able to keep lahaul and spiti out of my mind since then. Mostly will be doing it next year. Can you pls share your itinerary?
Also, was there anytime you felt AMS or is it very gradual elevation gain? Also, any suggestion around grey ghosts (snow leopards) sighting? I have heard that its possible to track them in spiti region.

Thanks in advance.

I sent(by email) you a rough itinerary, which I designed for one of my friend's Spiti trip(Ahmedabad to Ahmedabad by SUV)

The route from Shimla is a gradual ascent and helps you acclimatize, however, if you are coming from the Manali route, you will need to take a day’s rest in Manali to acclimatize before heading to Spiti.

Yes, this region is famous for Snow leopard spotting. This season(winter) some of my friends spotted Snow leopards around Chicham village. However, normal tourist season ( May to Oct) is not suitable for Snow leopard spotting.

Re: Lahaul and Spiti : A Photologue

Thanks for the wonderful travelogue and amazing pictures. This place looks worth a visit.

In which month you did this trip? Which is the best time for Spiti?

Do you have any contact numbers of cabs in Shimla (for a Spiti trip from Shimla)?

Can you please share your itinerary?

We did this trip during August month. June to September is the best time for Spiti.

We stayed at Parasol Retreat in Kaza and Keylong. They also provide tent accommodation at Chandra Tal.

kunzum Pass is between Manali and Kaza, which is notorious for closing early and opening late. Normally, it opens after mid-June and closes late September.

Re: Lahaul and Spiti : A Photologue

With Atal tunnel opening in near future, i expect road conditions to improve significantly for manali leh route. I guess tunnel will help in travel from Manali to chandra taal lake as well. Will it mean all year connectivity for chandra tal lake from Manali? Any idea?

Re: Lahaul and Spiti : A Photologue

Well, theoretically yes. But Practically it can be very tough to reach Chandra tal during winter due to heavy snow fall in that region.

I feel that would be very difficult or to say might be impossible to traverse with car/bike. From Batal to Chandrataal it is about 15 kilometers but with couple of water crossing which would be frozen (if water is present) add to that, it would covered with snow so won't be able to differentiate between road and nalah.
