Re: Altitude - The PhotoLog. Ladakh, the wilder one

Mind blowing stuff mate. Waiting for more.

P.S. I heard Sony sensors are not good for celestial photography (star eaters). Have they finally improved the firmware?

Tanveer what next? I can deduce that you guys did not freeze over in the tent by lake side but how was the night photography? How "comfortable" was the night? Waiting for some more pictures and wisecracks.

Its a cold long night...

Two days back we set up camp in Zanskar, looking at the heavens, and all we got were clouds and rain.
Today looked very similar.
Dark clouds and drizzle.
Was it going to be a damp squib? South was scary. Dark clouds from the Horizon to the Zenith, and howling winds. And cold. Very very cold, the cold which can freeze your bones. Add headache to that, which comes from spending a long time at 5100 feet.

The north did show us some truly brilliant STARs, and I shot what I could

And then little past 8pm, magic happened. The southern clouds stated dissipating, the the galactic core peeked through

Fifteen minutes later, it was clear, that it was going to be a very clear night

It was time to shoot for the stars. From here you will find three timelapse sequences in the video

The skies were truly glorious, and made us forget the winds, the cold, and the blowing dust. This kind of show is visible from very few places in the world. Its like you are almost in space

Such beauty can make you forget everything. Luckily, I did not forget that the white elephant needed to be started, and warmed up, or we would have to stay here much longer than planned.

Time for some northern views, with the Andromeda Galaxy flanking our disc

Thanks to the thunderstorms, the Airglow was at its max, almost giving an Aurora like glow. Now surprising, since its also charged particles

It takes an hour of shooting get just 10 seconds of footage. And it was past midnight we decided to call it a day. I just could have gone on and on, but it was too cold. Temperatures were little below freezing, but the winds and the altitude.... Well

Time to hunker down in the tent, on the top of the world, and call it the cliches of cliches... "The Billion Star hotel"

Thanks a billion stars for one more post of your journey.

Yes it is these brilliant views that are truly out of reach unless you get on to road less travelled,

Will she start

One of the downside of camping for Noon sleepers like us is the brightness. At the crack of dawn, the Sun breaks down the thin walls of your tent, and washes the entire landscape with horrendously bright light, which is very beautiful for photographers.
Luckily with the clouds, it wasn't until past 6am that it got really bright. However this time it was not the brightness which was our wakeup alarm. It was mere discomfort. The howling winds, the biting cold, and the high altitude.
Its never pleasant sleeping at this altitude, even after acclimatization, though I believe, a month here would make you get used to it.

That said it was beautiful outside

But my more immediate worry was, will she start. Off comes the Tarp, and one long crank later, its purring. Well thats an overstatement. In reality its a very very rough 600rpm idle. But she started, and soon everything is going to settle down. Time to pack up

And make a timelapse sequence of course. Daytime timelapses can go really fast. Just a few minutes of shooting get get you seconds of footage
Altitude - The PhotoLog. Ladakh, the wilder one-20160831dsc08293x3.jpg

And its really beautiful

Our target is Khoksar today, so haste must be made, the road must be hit. We are about to embark, on our longest journey, and eventually get very lost, in a marshland

The unseen Ladakh has some really amazing views. And the best part is that there are no record setting passes here, so its out of the route map of the number seekers, and therefore still in reach of most of us.

....again and again you leave us holding the proverbial >1#7 in our hands waiting for the next dose of your travelogue. Not fair at all.

What a landscape!! I though I had found a lovely place to camp deep in to the valley's to the west of Debring before Tanglang La. But this takes the cake.

Thanks for those beautiful photographs Tanveer Sir

You are a great influencer and yes, I know how much you love your photography and exactly what kind of effort it takes to click those marvels! The satisfaction it gives when you comeback and relive those moments thorough these photographs.
