Re: S-Cross'd : Gokak

16th September 2018

After enjoying the taller falls we went back
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_141958panoedit.jpg

If there is an overflowing river here the secondary falls just would become inaccessible or too difficult to reach
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_142044panoedit.jpg

We found a doggy (a shepherd dog) cooling down
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_142255edit.jpg

He enjoyed the dip in water and the breeze!
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_142339edit.jpg

Godachinamalki Doggy!

We left the falls by 14:30
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_142932edit.jpg

We drove all the way to Hidkal Dam

We also stopped by to check some crops.

Is it Jowar or Bajra are they both the same??

Re: S-Cross'd : Gokak

16th September 2018

We drove from Hidkal Dam to Hidkal Reservoir

I thought I could drive on the tank bund

But that was not to be
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_150820_01edit.jpg

So I clicked the reservoir

Peaceful environments
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_151010panoedit.jpg

Hidkal Reservoir

By then 21 guys got out from a tempo trax , and we decided to quit.

Hidkal Reservoir to Hattargi Toll Plaza on NH.

Had we continued onward from Sankeshwar on the same NH, we would have reached this toll plaza by 11:15, a cool drive of 15Kms, now after our circuit we have reached by 15:15, after about 90Kms inside. Which means, the time factor is about 4 hours for this loop. Probably on the right season with lots of water and birds, you could spend more time. Absolute minimum budget for time would be 4 hours to start a planning NH - NH for this loop.

And as usual, fast tag lanes are blocked for fast tag! And are forced to hybrid lane. Since there were no one in the queue we did not mind!

Fast tag lane not allowed at Hattargi

We then continued on our journey to Belgaum

We stopped by on seeing Ghataprabha River

Big River
S-Cross'd : Gokak-dsc_0242edit.jpg

I guess the reason for no water in the loop could be that all that is dammed here at Hidkal

Re: S-Cross'd : Gokak

16th September 2018

It was 16:00 by the time we entered Belgaum. Immediately went to check Belgaum Fort area, which has evaded me in my innumerable visits to Belgaum.

Driving into Belgaum Fort and stopping by Kamal Basadi

Kamal Basadi

Quote:
Kamal Basti is one of the two bastis situated within the walls of Belgaum Fort which is encircled by a Moat. There are two Jinalayas in later Chalukya style. One of them is Kamal Basti. This Jain Temple was built in 1204 AD by Bichirja, a minister of Kartavirya IV of the Ralta Dynasty. Two of its pillars have Kannada inscriptions in Nagari scripts, one of 1199 of Ratta King Kartaveerya IV and another of 1261 of Sevuna (Yadava) Krishna. The temple has Kadamba Nagara Shikara. The other Jinalaya is almost a ruined one. This 10th Century AD Basti is under the protection of Archeological Dept. This temple is nearby to Belgaum Main Bus Stand. The two temples in the fort are known as Kamal Basadi (Mandir) and Chikki Basadi.

Kamal Basadi is so called because of the Gumbaj of the temple as the masterpiece here is the "Mukhamantapa" with a well-executed in the form of the Lotus of 72 Petals on the ceiling. Outside the Kamala Basti is another ruined Jain temple called the Chikki Basti. The Belgaum Fort is the ancient architectural pre-Muslim monument is one of the best and shining examples of communal harmony with both mosques and temples co-exist in perfect harmony, though not much of the original structure remains.

In this temple, the past present and future Tirthankars 24 for each period are shown on the 72 petals of the lotus flower. The Sanctum Hill has the stone carved Sinhasan with seated Idol of Bhagwan Neminath and is very artistic. The pillars of the temple are decorated with carvings and brightly polished. The Idol of Bhagwan Neminath was found in the Jungle about 200 years ago. The Idol and other statues are of 11CAD.

There are Idols of Bhagwan Sumatinath in standing posture, Idol of Bhagwan Adinath in Padamasan, Idol of Bhagwan Parsvanath under the shade of 7 hooded Nagraj.

Also the only single Masterpiece in the world is the Idol of Navgraha which is also worth seeing. This temple is under active puja.

This could be the lotus petals

Re: S-Cross'd : Gokak

16th September 2018

It was already 17:00, and then since we did not have lunch, decided to stop at our favorite all day running Sankam Residency restaurant. Idea was to have Linner

All girls looked famished and happy at the break for Linner!

Pasta Arabiata for Jr. PPG

Gulab Jamun for the sweet ladies
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_180440edit.jpg

Fruit Salads too
S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_180501edit.jpg

S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180916_180505edit.jpg

After a great Linner, we started our return journey home. It was almost 19:00 by then.

Super Belgaum Dharward NH

With not so spirited driving we reached home after dropping Sr. PPG at her PG by 01:30AM.

Odo says 2554 Kms for the whole of MSH4 drive, and that means some 800 Kms from Karad for the day

S-Cross'd : Gokak-img_20180917_013526edit.jpg

After taking our luggage out hit the bed for the night, and a good drive is completed.

The End.

Now, that's a sequel in the making

Well narrated travelogue with beautiful pictures. Kudos to the supportive family for staying strong all through out your tarmac adventures. Hats off to Kungfu Panda!

During our last year's south India drive (Kochi - BLR - Goa - Hampi), we (me and my better half) thought of visiting Gokak falls, however had to drop the plan at the last moment. Now we see, what we have missed out

Thanks bhp_maniac.

That can be done in next your drive towards Mumbai or MH. Budget a minimum of 4 hours for this loop.

If it looks like this budget more

Re: S-Cross'd : Gokak

Excellent photography

You brought back my childhood memories - when we used to visit the villages around Gokak during our summer holidays, where my relatives stayed. Those were the days when we used to travel via KSRTC bus / trucks / bullock carts to reach these villages. It used to be a day's affair just to travel 100 kms. Now some people in these villages are owning SUVs.

The last I visited Gokak falls was 30 years back. I still remember the hanging bridge which used to have some missing wooden planks and used to oscillate sideways. When we looked down, it used to scare the wits out of us when we imagined what would happen if the bridge gave way and with massive boulders way down waiting for us

It used to be fun. Is the bridge still the same?

...and yes Gokak kardant. I will get some when I go there next month.

30 years back! Oh my, I guess the place would have been so beautiful back then. Bridge still remains, but now we are not allowed to walk on this bridge. Its closed, and a board says the mill guys are allowed at certain timings. I can only imagine looking down at the gush of water running to the falls from the bridge. Could have been really scary.

Kardant was very nice

Both are millets. The one in picture is Jowar.

Jowar (Sorghum) is called as ಬಿಳಿ ಜೋಳ (=White Jola) in Kannada.
S-Cross'd : Gokak-sorghum.jpg

Bajra (Pearl millet) is called ಸಜ್ಜೆ (=Sajje).
