Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Having not gone for any trip during the whole summer, it was finally decided that we at least had to go for a short vacation to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and rejuvenate ourselves. Being stationed in Bengaluru gives one a lot of options in the form of hillstations to visit and explore due to their convenient proximity. So, after pondering over the various options like Coorg, Wayanad, Yercaud, Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal the finalized destination was Coonoor. Coonoor was given the upper hand because it being a smaller town would have lesser tourist population and besides this good accommodation at Coonoor was a little easier to find when compared to Ooty. That said every hill station is packed during the summer, news about huge traffic jams at these hill stations could be found often.

The main purpose of the trip was to relax and hence finding a good property that met your needs would be essential. We managed to get accommodation at Tea Nest, Coonoor for 2 nights which is the 24th and 25th of May. We booked our accommodation about twenty days in advance. With the accommodation booked the trip was finally confirmed. We started in the morning on the 24th of May and returned back in the night on the 26th of May.

Route Plan:
The plan was simple Bengaluru->Coonoor->Bengaluru albeit the routes we planned to take to and fro were going to be completely different.
While going to Coonoor, we took the NH44 till Salem and after Salem moved onto NH544 till Avinashi. From Avinashi to Coonoor is a single lane state highway.
While returning from Coonoor we took the route as follows:
Coonoor – Ooty – Gudalur – Madumalai – Bandipur – Mysore – Kanakapura – Bengaluru

Our Drive:
The Hyundai Creta Petrol

re: Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Day 1-Friday,24th May
Bengaluru-Coonoor via Salem

The initial plan was to start by 5:00 am from home, but finally managed to start only by 6:00 am. Initially the plan was to take the route via Mysore and Bandipur but considering that we were starting after 6, we decided to go via Salem because the traffic on the Bengaluru-Mysore highway was bound to keep increasing. Another advantage of taking the Salem route was that we did not have to pass through Ooty to reach Coonoor. While returning we came via Bandipur and hence had to pass through Ooty, which took us an hour and a half to cross, double the time it takes during non-peak seasons.
65 kilometres after the start of our journey, at 7:00 am we had our breakfast at A2B. After this we decided to stop only once for a fuel break before Coonoor. Till Avinashi, the road is a mix of 6 lane and 4 lane with the route till Salem mostly being 6 lane. Till Salem we were on the NH44 and at Salem we moved onto NH544. The road conditions are excellent and only as you near Salem the traffic density increases slightly.

After Avinashi, we moved onto the single lane State Highway. The traffic was not very heavy and it was smooth sailing till Coonoor.

We reached our hotel in Coonoor at 2:00 pm. The hotel was a beautiful property nestled among vast tea gardens and away from the hustle and bustle of the main Coonoor town, a good place to relax and get refreshed. The road in front of the property sees very less traffic and hence it is very calm and peaceful. We shifted our luggage into our room and then had our lunch and took some rest till 5 in the evening. Lamb’s Rock and Dolphin Nose were two viewpoints that were situated close to where we were staying. 4 kilometers away was Lamb’s Rock. Lamb’s Rock got its name from Captain Lamb who developed this place. The closing time was 5:30 pm and we just managed to reach in time. It was very sparsely crowded as it was almost going to close, and so it was easy to find parking there easily. It is a little walk to the view point. There were no clouds obstructing the view, but it was a little foggy.

From the Lamb’s Rock view point you can also see this mountain which resembles a woman in a sleeping posture and hence is aptly called the Sleeping Lady. When you observe the silhouette of the mountain from right to left you can see that the rightmost portion resembles hair and then as you move left you can see the face, throat, chest and legs. There are many mountains all around and each seems to resemble something or the other based upon one’s imagination!

It was easy to find parking at Lamb’s Rock.

Dolphin Nose View Point is situated a few kilometers away after crossing Lamb’s Rock. The tip of the peak resembles a dolphin, hence the name Dolphin Nose. Here the road meets an end and opens up onto a valley. The view point is a V-shaped cliff from which you can see the surrounding mountains and valleys. We could also spot the Catherine Waterfall from this view point. The view point was not very crowded making it a pleasant experience.

Enroute to our hotel we visited this shop that is called ‘Home Made Chocolate Factory’. They were selling eucalyptus oil and various varieties of chocolates and tea. They demonstrated to us how the manufacture of eucalyptus oil took place and also the chocolate manufacturing technique. We tasted a few varieties of tea like ginger lemon, chocolate, masala and the regular tea. A decent place to explore and make a few purchases.

After this, we straight away returned to our hotel. Freshened up, had a tasty dinner and walked around for a while. In Coonoor, during the evening it was not very cold but as night approached it became cold although it was quite warm inside the room. We went to sleep all excited for all we had to explore the next day. It was a wonderful start to this sweet little trip, just like the way we wanted it to be.

re: Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Day 2-Saturday,25th May
This was the day we spent entirely in Coonoor.

We woke up at 7:00 am in the morning and went for a relaxing walk on the road just outside the property. The road is lined with tea estates on both sides. These were the Singara Tea Estates. There was greenery all around. All the mountain slopes were covered by tea plantations. The road hardly sees traffic and hence there was no disturbance at all. One could hear birds chirping all around. A walk of around a kilometer and you could see the Singara Estate Tea Factory. It was a great way to start the day with a nice walk amidst nature.

A few photographs I captured

After our walk, we went back to our room, freshened up, had our complementary breakfast and were ready by 9:30 am. So, the plan for the first half of the day was to visit Sim’s Park here in Coonoor. There was a fruit show being held at Sim’s Park. The Fruit Show is an annual event in Coonoor. In this show, fruits from all the surrounding districts were to be showcased. It is held for 2 days, that is in this case the 25th and the 26th of May. It was just a coincidence that our time of visit to Coonoor coincided with this Annual Fruit Show. When we spoke to locals in Coooor they said that a large number of tourists would be coming from Ooty as well and hence suggested that it would be better to go to Sim’s Park early so that the crowd is marginally lesser and it would be easier to find parking as well. Our plan for the second half of the day was not finalised yet and we decided that we would take a call as to where to go after having our lunch. Hence, we first headed to Sim’s Park. Elaborate measures in place and the police were monitoring the junctions so that there would be no pile up of vehicles. A large ground was designated for parking. It was relatively empty by the time we reached but the inflow of vehicles was constantly increasing. Parked our car, bought tickets and off we went.

We continued roaming around the park for sometime and also tried out a few varieties of fruits. The park is maintained quite well and is home to some really old and unique trees that are often seen in other countries and also to some that are seen in the Himalayas. Many flowers are also showcased in the park. There is also a rose garden within the park premises.

The crowd was continuing to increase and we left the park at 12:30 pm. It was a decent experience in the park. One can spend around 2 hours walking around the park and exploring the various trees and flowers present within the park. The parking lot which was relatively empty when we arrived in the morning at 9:30 was packed by the time we were returning.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5042.jpg

We were a little tired after all the walking around and hence headed back to our hotel for lunch.

re: Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Day 2 Continued ...

We had our lunch and also relaxed for sometime while thinking about what to do next. We enquired with the hotel staff as to what other places we could pay a visit to in Coonoor. They suggested us to visit Wellington Lake which is in the cantonment area of Coonoor. There is boating available at Wellington and is not too crowded. It is not a very huge lake but its surroundings are neat. It started raining as we entered the lake and hence we could not do boating in the lake. We could not walk all around the lake as the rain did not subside completely. We sat near the lake for sometime and relaxed. The lake had a calm atmosphere which we enjoyed.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5086.jpg

After the rain subsided a bit, we headed to Coonoor market area which is situated next to the Coonoor bus stand. The area surrounding the bus stand was jam packed and finding a parking place was proving to be difficult. After waiting for about half an hour to 45 minutes we managed to find parking at the paid parking next to the bus stand. The parking space is very congested, so it is advisable that if one wants to pay a visit to Coonoor market then it is better that they come here in an auto rickshaw.
After roaming in the market for sometime and making some purchases we went to Bedford Circle which has some good options for eating snacks and also to buy some good quality shawls, sweaters or other similar items.

Some photos taken near Bedford Circle

After some snacks and shopping we decided to return back to our hotel.
We fuelled up our Creta for our return journey the following day. After fuelling up we went back to our rooms, had dinner and played badminton for sometime before going to sleep. This brought an end to day 2 of our trip. The next day was to be the final leg of our trip.

re: Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Day 3-Sunday, 26thMay

Route Taken: Coonoor - Ooty - Gudalur - Mysore - Kanakapura – Bengaluru

Once again headed out for a walk in the morning at 7:00 am. This time we spotted bisons among the tea garden. We were told by the hotel staff that one could spot bisons during the night in the area surrounding the tea gardens but they would not harm anyone. The hotel staff locked the gates of the property after a certain time to prevent their entry into the hotel compound. It was really nice to be able to spot them among the tea estates.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5121.jpg

We also spotted a hoopoe on one of the trees in the tea garden. It was the first time that we were seeing a hoopoe. The hoopoe is the national bird of the State of Israel.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5120.jpg

We freshened up and had our breakfast. This was the view from the hotel while leisurely having tea.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_20190526_092226.jpg

We loaded all our luggage into the car and cleared the dues that had to be paid. It was really good time that we had spent at Coonoor and it was time to head back to Bengaluru. The two nights that we had stayed at Coonoor had passed by so quickly. We had a lot of fun.

A parting shot before we headed out of the hotel

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_20190526_094207.jpg

We started from Coonoor at 10:00 am and managed to reach Ooty only at 11:30 am due to the heavy traffic enroute. I guess that the day being a Sunday, the traffic was heavier than usual.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5132.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5133.jpg

After crossing Ooty, we took the route via Gudalur to reach Bandipur. The route via Masinagudi was open for one-way traffic only, that is the one coming from Bengaluru to Ooty. Hence, we took the Gudalur route. The Gudalur route is lined with tall trees on either side of the road. It is a pleasant experience to drive on this road due to its scenic beauty. There was a small lake enroute that we stopped at.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5134.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5135.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5136.jpg

We continued on with our journey and after a while we stopped at a shooting point, whose name I am not sure of. It had tall trees and it opened up to a huge plain land. There were quite a few tourists there.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5139.jpg

Sheeps could be seen at a distance

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5142.jpg

We were back on the road by around 12:15 pm and decided to not stop at any more view points. There was increase in traffic density as we neared the 9th Mile shooting point. We decided to give this a skip as the crowd was heavy and there was a huge queue for parking as well. The sun was also beating down quite heavily and we were already slightly exhausted. The situation was similar even with Pykara Lake and hence we did not stop there as well.

Photo taken as we were passing by 9th mile shooting point

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5150.jpg

The Gudalur route is beautiful and scenic. A very beautiful scenery we saw along the way.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5162.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5165.jpg

We started searching for places to have lunch just after the ghat section ended. It was already 2:15 pm and we were starting to feel hungry. We stopped for lunch a few kilometers before entering Madumalai Tiger Reserve. After having lunch, we were back on the road. At around 3:00 pm we entered Madumalai Tiger Reserve. Within about 300 meters we spotted a huge elephant to our left that was very close to the road. We were pleasantly surprised to spot an elephant so early into the forest. I could not get a photograph of that elephant as we did not expect it to appear as soon as we entered the forest reserve.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5168.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5172.jpg

As we continued our journey through the forest reserve, we spotted deer, peacocks and elephants.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5175.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5178.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5180.jpg

As you enter into Karnataka from Tamilnadu you move from Madumalai Tiger Reserve to Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5183.jpg

The tree growth on either side of the road in Bandipur Tiger Reserve is not as dense as that in Madumalai Tiger Reserve. The effect of the forest fires that took place here in February were still evident. Never the less, we spotted quite a few animals in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5184.jpg

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_5185.jpg

We also spotted a bison and a few deer which I did not capture. After crossing Bandipur there was nothing much to see. We slowly continued on with our journey towards Bengaluru. At Mysore we took a diversion towards Kanakapura as the Bengaluru-Mysore Highway is known for its heavy traffic on Sunday evenings. Even google maps suggested the same. I do not know whether it was the right decision at that moment and time because there was still road widening work going in many places in the Kanakapura route. Besides this there was traffic in Kanakapura town as well. So, in the end I felt that we would have pretty much reached at the same time even if we had taken the Bangalore-Mysore Highway.
Just as we entered Bengaluru it started raining heavily. We had our dinner on the way and returned back to our home at 10:00 pm. This brought an end to our little trip of three days.

The final reading on the odo

Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta-img_20190602_171211.jpg

We made a lot of great memories during the course of this trip. We enjoyed our stay in Coonoor thoroughly and also got a much needed break from our everyday duties. Such trips help in rejuvenating oneself and give the mind and body a break. The memories from this trip will be etched in my mind for a long time to come. Thanks for reading through.

Nice travelogue Futurestan and nice pictures as well.

Any place in the Western Ghats is great for a weekend getaway. But places like Coonoor have lesser tourists and can be enjoyed more.

I have eaten these chocolates and they are yum. Do you have more pics/details on how these chocolates are made? I hope you had some .

I dint seen bisons when I visited Ooty and Coonoor but did see these magnificent creatures when I was in B.R.Hills.

Yes, that's true. One can enjoy more if they visit a place that has a moderate tourist density or if possible, make a visit during the off season.

No, I do not have anymore pictures. We were just shown the machine in which the various ingredients were mixed. We did not get to see the step by step procedure that takes place in the manufacture of these chocolates.
And yes, we did buy a box of chocolates. They are indeed very tasty!

Nice travelogue. The pics were great. Esp the SIMS park fruit festival ones.

I wanted to know about the Fuel Efficiency achieved during this trip. If you have a breakdown based on fueling-up like Bangalore -> Getting out of the city Vs, Highway -> Coonoor and Coonoor - Ooty, taking into fact that there was traffic within Ooty city, etc and vice-versa, it will help.

I am a recent owner of a pre-owned Creta Petrol Manual from July, 2018. And so far have only been able to drive within in the city for short (7-8 kms one-way) commutes. In two tank-fulls so far, the city mileage has not overgrown 10 kmpl. Except for a drive to airport and back which was roughly 80+ kms where I seemed to have achieved around 15+ kmpl.

Well described travelogue with awesome photos to tell stories! I am sure you must have achieved the purpose of Rejuvenation.

Could you describe bit more of the road conditions from Ooty to Mysore via Bandipur? It's in my list this year during Deepavali / Diwali holidays. Very much interested to drive via the ghat road.

I had done this trip a couple of times, once in 2016 and once in 2018.

Mysuru to Gundlupete (a town where you take a diversion towards Bandipur) - Mostly a State Highway with 4-6 lanes and a divider in place, etc. You should be able to go through this pretty much like any highway.

Bandipur to Theppakadu - 2 lane state road without a divider. But mostly driving on plains with little elevation to cover. There are a lot of speed-breakers inside Bandipur and for the right reason. This drive is thoroughly enjoyable during any season. This is one route where one can best utilize the sunroof of their cars. Even in hardcore summer, this is pretty cool and pleasant.

Theppakadu - Ooty - 2 lane state road but mostly climbing atop the mountain. The drive is enjoyable to the core if you are an enthusiast driver. There are 36 hairpin bends. Care and precaution need to be taken as this is ghat road and you will have a decent amount of opposite traffic. The good thing is since you would be the one climbing, most of the traffic from the other side would ideally give you a clear path. But Diwali can be a busy time in Ooty. Expect a lot of traffic once within Ooty.

Re: Coonoor: Sweet little trip in a Creta

Futurestan, thanks for a nice travelogue. Coonoor is a beautiful place and ideal if you want to get some quiet time. In fact, going to Tea Nest is an annual affair for our family. We have been going there for the last 6 years and never tire of it.

Once you have done the tourist circuit just go to Coonoor and Kotagiri to enjoy the serenity, the company of awesome people and endless drives with your windows rolled down .

Nice two day trip and a simple but enjoyable travelogue. Just one disappointment. Food Photos, details of restaurants and the review of food is missing. For us, this is one important aspect of our travel...

I have not monitored the city mileage recently but the last time we had checked it was around the 10 kmpl mark. It hovers around the 10 kmpl mark.
When I checked on a 300+ km highway drive, we got 15+ kmpl.

That is great to hear. Yes, one will never get tired of going to Tea Nest due to its serene and quiet atmosphere.

Thanks for your feedback. I will include these aspects in future travelogues.
Coming to our recent Coonoor trip, we had all our meals during our stay at Tea Nest itself. Though the varieties may be less, the food here is very delicious and one will not be disappointed.
