| Beaky flies north A Spiti Travelogue Day 13: 02-Oct-2019 - Tabo to Kaza (Continued...) We reached there around lunch time and had lunch at the restaurant called “Hotel Tashi Khangsar” which is under Dhankar Monastry. We even took a room so that we could dump all our goods and park the bikes safely before proceeding to Dhankar Lake. @Dhankar Monastry  Parking Lot @Dhankar Monastry  We started our trek by 2:45 pm which we did it in a very slow manner and did not want to stretch our-self as we had plans to ride and reach Kaza for our night halt. The scenery in and around the lake is wonderful but the water level was quite low. It looked more like a big pond than a lake. I felt it was more beautiful to watch from the mountain to the valley than just the lake. And by the time we started from the monastery to Kaza it was almost 6:30pm and quite dark. We took a shorter route (as suggested by the hotel guy), but after riding a few hundreds of meters we started getting scared due to pitch dark and no roads (I don’t think I would do that again in a bike). As we all had Bluetooth communication devices in our helmets it was quite reassuring (that was the time when I realized the advantage of having one – I was quite reluctant on investing on that). Once we crossed the big mountain (short cut) and landed into the main road, the ride became smooth and relaxing except for the biting cold (I had removed the thermals as I had felt quite hot after the trek). Detour or shortcut which was a mistake  By 8:30pm or so we reached Kaza and the first thing what we did was filled the bike to the brim and parked it safely in the hotel as we did not have any plans to do the sightseeing in bike at kaza. | Beaky flies north A Spiti Travelogue Day 14: 03-Oct-2019 - In and around Kaza As we were running short of days we decided to hire a local cab to see all the tourist places. The cab was booked to arrive @7:30am and would be a full day tour, covering all the important tourist destination in Kaza. So we woke up early and got ready pretty quickly (no packing today). Had some hot ginger lime tea with honey and visited the Tangyud Monastery (nothing to write about, except that it is supposed to be highest Monastery of India). The post master is quite friendly and helpful. We all got couple of cards to be sent home and friends. We were offered some hot tea which was very welcoming and some Prasad (dried fruits) too. The monks were very kind/courteous. We did take a bit long break to visit the rooms/places of the Monastery. I liked the smooth stairs made out of stones. The rooms were small but quite warm/cozy inside. Some rooms were quite dark too, which had only natural light and it was getting late and the sun was set. After that we just went to the local market to inquire about the road condition and climate at Chandrataal. | Beaky flies north A Spiti Travelogue Day 15: 04-Oct-2019 Kaza to Batal via Chandratal Woke up early as we had planned to start as soon as possible so that we can reach Kunzum pass before it gets hotter and snow melts which would create rivers. Got things ready and packed everything by 6:30AM and started before 7AM. On the way we stopped at chicham bridge to take photo with the bike. @Chicham Bridge  Beyond Chicham the condition of the road deteriorated quite a lot and speed was reduced to less than 20KMPH, but the scenery was awesome so we stopped at couple of places to enjoy but with very few photos as it was too cold to remove your gloves (I had two gloves - inner and riding). Mesmerizing  Mesmerizing  Mesmerizing and Imposing  Mesmerizing  Slowly but steadily by 9:30AM or so reached Losar. As the roads were very bad it started to take tolls on our body and started to get hungry too, hence stopped at a local hotel in Losar. Had some hot tea and hot water with hot parotta which was quite filling. Hungry Ajay?  Started again by 10am and on the way met few people who said that the roads are bad and the possibility of going to Chandratal is quite low. After couple of kilometers we reached a checkpoint where BRO discouraged us and said not to take the route. He said it is quite risky and even said that some persons had met with accident previous day who lost his life too. We had to sign the register stating that we undertake the ride at our own risk. This made us bit uncomfortable and we were the only people who were going to Batal that day. On the way we saw some bikers who said that the roads are very bad and they did slip/slide on the way but can be managed if we are careful, which was quite heartening to hear. We reached Kunzum Pass by around 11:30AM. After taking the mandatory selfies we decided to proceed to Chandratal. @Kunzum Pass  The roads were quite horrible with some big river crossing which we could cross without much difficulty. But to add to our woes, we found that there were no active tents and most of the tents/accommodations were in the process of closing for the year. There were few tents but that was already booked. The persons there said that it is going to snow heavily (it had started to drizzle/snow and the visibility was poor even when we were talking) and it is better if we hurry and reach Batal as soon as possible. He even added that the roads from batal to Rhotang is also broken/blocked and no vehicles have reached them for past 24 hours. This news actually worried us. So we started immediately as we had to cross all the nalas which would have swelled by the hour on the way to Chandratal. On the return journey to Batal the water rose quite more and water started to flow in torrents (just 30/45 minutes made so much difference). This time we crossed one by one with other persons overlooking the crossing. We made it safe and sound and reached Batal before 2PM To get an accommodation it was quite a challenge and we did bargain with the person at the HP guest house guy and he was reluctant but ultimately we got a single room where we rested for a while. Later we went outside to cover the bikes and have lunch at dhaba (run by the same guy). @HP PWD Guest house  It was so cold that V-Strom started to show "Snow" icon  Bikes Covering in process to protect it from Snow/Ice  Cooped up!!!  It started to snow heavily so we took shelter and decided not to venture out. As we had nothing to do, dozed off and got up around 7pm had dinner at the same place and prayed to god for a better weather next day. | Beaky flies north A Spiti Travelogue Day 16: 05-Oct-2019 – Batal to Manali via Rohtang La Woke up bit early to a cold open sky which was a great relief for us. Previous night some trucks had arrived to the nearby dhaba which comforted us quite a lot (meant that the road block is gone). The local people at the dhaba advised us not to venture out early as there would be ice on the road and to wait for couple of hours, so that the four wheeler will create tracks. That was a good suggestion as on route we drove on the tracks created by trucks (which as applicable for couple of kilometers only). First we readied the bike by clearing the snow/ice stuck. Mutistrada’s lock was stuck as water had seeped in and frozen. Got some hot water from Dhaba and poured near the lock area to get it stuck. Packed/tied the luggage to the bike and proceeded to take photos of nearby place (to kill time). Ice, Ice Baby  After removing the initial layer of ice (was easy removed the plastic sheet)  Iced beaky  Chilled MS1260  Random Shots  Random Shots  In and around Batal  In and around Batal  In and around Batal  In and around Batal  In and around Batal  Ready for Marathon  By 10am we started for next marathon to reach Rhotang Pass as soon as possible, hence decided to stop only for nature stop and not for food anywhere (here chocolates came handy - but the water in the bottle was too cold for my liking). The drive was quite uneventful except for few water crossing and slushy roads and some rain for company. By around 1:30 or so we reached Gramphu (the place where Leh-Manali road and Batal-Manali road meets). From Gramphu onwards we reached proper tarred road and by 2pm or so we reached Rhotang, where we took a small snack break and some photoshoot. | Beaky flies north A Spiti Travelogue Day 17: 06-Oct-2019 – Manali to Gurugram Slept peacefully till day break as we had decided not to rush and next day was going to be rest day (bike service day). After breakfast we started our return journey to Delhi by 10:30am or so. The climate was cool and not cold so we removed all our winter clothes (thermals/inners etc) which was a wise decision. But the start timing was very bad as we encountered road block and the pace was very slow. By 1:30pm we could reach only upto Kullu, where we had our lunch. By the time we reached Mandi It was almost 4pm, Bilaspur by 06:30PM, New Nalagarh by 09:30PM where we had our dinner. We felt quite drained due to the bad conditions of the road so dinner break became a long break. By 11:00PM we crossed Ambala and in another one hour crossed Karnal. We had decided not go fast as it was night and we were feeling quite tired even sleep was creeping in (disaster in the offing). Thanks to the walkies-talkie we started to sing, scream, talk nonsense to get us motivated and not think of sleep. With one more coffee break (actually it was to give our bums a good rest and not for sleep busting). At last by 3:00 am we reached Gurugram and decided to fill the tanks before hitting the bed. All-in-all a “BUM/BUTT” tiring ride. We decided to go to the same Bikanervala as the place was just a stone’s throw from the hotel and we had liked lassi. Enjoying Lassi  After heavy lunch we just rested till 5PM which was the appointed time for collecting Ajay’s bike where my eyes feasted at the exotic bikes (did not take much photos though). @Ducati, Gurgaon  Evening was spent at a local mall and by 9:00pm we hit the bed. We took a longish lunch at somewhere near Bhilwara by about 12:30PM. Once the heat was up our pace reduced and crossed Udaipur by 7:00 PM. We decided to ride till we were sleepy and by about 9PM we decided to end as sleep was creeping in. Checking the route? As usual we started by 9AM and had planned to reach Mumbai as Ajay had some errands to be done in Mumbai (Dadar) and Lovelin some others at Vasai which meant that Fellowship of the Trip would end today. After that Lovelin would depart to Hyderabad as he had some errands there and we (Ajay/Me) decided to head back home. In about 3 hours time we reached Godhra with just one stop. Stopped by 1:30PM for lunch and in another2 hours or so we crossed Vadodara and could reach Bharuch by 3:30PM. With a big halt at Surat we could reach Naigon by 9:00PM. Here we had to take long break as it started to rain cats and dogs, add to it the roads were bad and the mountainous roads looked dangerous with lots of potholes. By the time rain gods showed some mercy it was way past 10:30PM. Here we parted ways as Lovelin decided to take shelter nearby as his errands were quite near from this place. Ajay and me continued to Dadar and could reach there by 12:00AM. Took the hotel nearest to the location where Ajay had the errands and we hit the bed. This was the only hotel that we took which did not have closed parking, so we were quite uncomfortable. We did pay handsome tips to security guard and that did the magic. As I was quite uncomfortable to park the vehicle on the roadside, decided to move on to Lonovala. The advantage being to explore the Ghats of Lonovala and stay at some place where there is closed parking. Even without having breakfast which was free and before the maddening crowd started I left for Lonovala. On the way had my breakfast and before I could reach lonovala, it started to drizzle, because of which I had to take the first hotel that I could reach which had closed parking. Took a good rest and prayed to god for the clouds to clear so that I could explore Lonova. By about 2PM Lovelin reached the hotel where we had lunch together and Lovelin proceeded to Hyderabad. As my plans of exploring Lonovala was again thwarted by Rain Gods, had to be contended walking down the streets with borrowed umbrella (from hotel). By 5PM Ajay joined after which we decided to have some local food (Pav/Kachori and lots of Chikki too). With many stops we reached Tumkur by night and decided to stay here rather than thundering into the apartment in the dead of night. From Krishnagiri onwards we decided to go 2 ways as I had to go to Trivandrum which could be reached via Madurai, Tirunelveli faster than riding through Kerala with small roads and signals. As Ajay had to reach Alleppy he decided to take Salem, Walayar, Palakkad road. Being exited to reach home the sleep was broken very early and we could start by 4AM. We drove together till Salem where we had breakfast and we parted ways. Being alone I decided to ride continuously till the fuel gauge goes into reserve or to say fuel warning icon starts blinking. With just one fuel cum standing coffee break, I could reach Tirunelveli by 12PM. Had my early lunch and decided to ride non stop till home. Crossed Nagarcoil by 1:30PM and before 3:30PM reached home. The only delay was one road block (it was some kind of Kaavadi Aatam crossing the highway). That's the only place I missed in your pics. Thanks for the very detailed day logs, someone could use these to plan the same trip. I did spiti in 2016 on hired RE classic and though that was over powered on some of the dirt ghat sections. How did you feel with rides so powerful one wrong twist of get wrist to send down hundreds of feet? I imagine the scare. Kudos on an awesome thread! Rated 5 stars! |

Also I think he made a mistake in saying breakfast @Pooh, it was at Nako. Also @kozhissery says it was pretty uneventful from Batal to Manali, but on the contrary I felt that was the most challenging ride in this entire trip. Route was full of slush and mud, 23 water crosssings with 2 big ones, Steep climbs in slush e.t.c;. I was talking to him regarding this and he told me his mind completely conked out due to freezing temperature at Batal and the day before Chandratal ride. Just two questions. 1) What care did you guys have to take for getting the bikes started in the sub-zero temperatures please? 2) Did you notice any significant difference in the power delivery of the bikes at those higher altitudes? With Quarantine and Lockdown Team BHP is flying with new threads everyday. How are you guys managing to keep up with this flurry of threads and keeping the content top notch. Kudos to the members and the mods for this. |
