Gokarna – Murudeshwar – Udupi – Subrahmanya | Temples, beaches, a fort, forest and waterfall too

Gokarna – Murudeshwar – Udupi – Subrahmanya

Places visited

Gokarna main beach
Mirjan Fort
Yana Caves
Vibhooti Falls
Maha Ganapathy Temple
Mahabaleshwar & Tamra Gowri Temple
Murudeshwar Temple
Udupi Sri Krishna Temple and the Goshala
Udupi Anantheswaran Temple
Kaup beach and light house
Kukke Subrahmanya Temple
Aadi Subrahmanya Temple in Kukke

Routes taken

Bangalore – Davangere – Ranebennur – Haveri – Sirsi – Gokarna
Haveri – Sirsi is not a good option given the current road condition. Maybe other options on shorter routes are worse.

Gokarna – Murudeshwar – Udupi

This is a fantastic, scenic beach side NH and driving was sheer pleasure.

Udupi – Mangalore - Uppinangady – Subrahmanya

Roadwork on near to Bantwal for about 6 to 8 kms that slows you down considerably.
An alternative route could be considered.

Subrahmanya – Sakleshpur – Hassan – Nelamangala - Bangalore

Missed the Bisle ghat exit option, that takes one through Arakalgud, as there were no sign indicating that and by default took the Gundya – Sakleshpur route. Never take this route. After Gundya it is a mix of very bad stretch and some good ones. But the bad part experience far outweighs the good ones.

Day 1 Left Bengaluru at 6 am and reached Gokarna at 4 pm. Spent the evening in the main beach.

Day 2 Mirjan Fort, Yana Caves and Vibhooti Falls

As this is a full day programme please carry food packets – breakfast, lunch, snacks, small bites, whatever. Bathing is allowed in Vibhooti falls. So carry proper water wear to enjoy. Also, as the pathway is through forest (half to one km), proper footwear is a must.

Day 3 Early morning darshan at Maha Ganapathy temple and Mahabaleshwar temple. Thereafter, post breakfast set off for Murudeshwar.
Lunch at Murudeshwar after darshan at the temple and a visit to the top of the tower.

Post lunch set off for Udupi. Spent the evening at the Kaup beach.

Day 4 Sri Krishna temple and Goshala and some nearby temples.

Do not park the vehicles very near to the temple as the street that one traversed will get closed by 10 am and exit back to main road would be time consuming. It is better to park the vehicle little away and walk the distance.
Evening at the Kaup beach again, this time to the Light house. Climb to the Light house is quite steep especially the last 15 steps. So advise caution for certain individuals. Carry a small flask of water.

Day 5 Set off for Kukke Subrahmanya at 6 am and reached there at 9 am.

After a good darshan and breakfast took off for Bengaluru and reached at 6.30 pm with lunch break at Yediyur.

Few Points

1. As noted by many Apoorva Resorts at Davangere is good for food and bio break.

2. Four wheelers (other than a Nano) inside Gokarna is not a good option given the narrow alleys there. One can manage, but if the traffic is high, then it would eat up a lot of time, manoeuvring and giving way. Park the vehicle near the main beach and rent a bike. Taxis also available as a package.

3. Better to avoid beach side shacks and eateries in Gokarna and stay little away where roads would be wider and parking space and food options would be plenty. Hotel Gananjaya is a good option.

4. There are two routes to visit Yana caves. Go from Gokarna side and not Kumta side. This way one can visit both Yana caves as well as Vibhooti falls. On google maps put Yana caves as destination with stop over at Vibhooti falls.

5. At Udupi Sri Krishna Temple make a point to visit the Goshala, wherein they have native breeds that you don’t see any more outside.

6. In Udupi, as we stayed near Kaup, Saai Saagar turned out to be a great place for food.

7. At Yediyur, don’t try chaat items at Paakshala. The filter coffee is good, though. Swati Delicacy is a better option. This can be vouched by the fact that the number of cars at Swati was considerably more than at Paakshala on that day and time (3 pm). Paakshala was deserted.

Thanks for the travelogue.
Not sure what exactly is wrong with your post, the test is NOT wrapped to the page width and needs to scroll horizontally to read. This is causing inconvenience. I have checked with other pages from TBHP. They are fine.
Request you as well as mods to look into the issue.

No idea why?

On the mobile it is ok. I think mods need to check.

I guess the culprit is that one pano shot that extends the page width horizontally. Maybe mods can fix the width for that picture.
