| Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Sun, Sea and Boat Rides! These words summarize our vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia. In sun, I also include the fantastic sunsets and sunrises we saw there. And the boat rides include the scenic, tiny, uninhabited islands that we hopped around. We (I and my wife) spent 6 days and 5 nights towards the end of December 2024, vacationing in Langkawi, Malaysia. This is a travelogue from that trip. Langkawi is a small island (actually an archipelago of 99 tiny islands) located about 30km inside the sea from the coast of Northwestern Malaysia. The island is famous for scenic beaches, hills, watersports and boat rides, and duty-free shopping (the entire island is duty-free!). As usual, ours was a somewhat last minute plan when we got some free time away from our work schedules towards the end of the year. It helped that Malaysia has visa-free entry for Indian citizens now, and it also helped that there are direct flights from Bangalore to Langkawi now. So without much planing or preparation, we just booked our tickets, hopped on the plane and had a great time in Langkawi! We have been to other parts of Malaysia before, but this was our first time in Langkawi itself. We rented a car which we picked up from the airport immediately after arrival (more on the car later). Having our own (rental) car was very convenient for driving around there. The distances are small (it is a tiny island; the longest drive end to end would be some 40km) and traffic is thin. Of course, there are taxis available in Langkawi, and one could just use taxis too. However, we saw that people who had booked taxis would usually wait for a long time for their taxis to arrive. For a short 10 minute drive (typical drives there from place to place), if one has to wait 20 minutes for their booked cab to arrive, then it would lose the whole point. That is why having a car helped - we could drive around from restaurant to restaurant or shop to shop, with short 10-15 minutes drives, zero waits, and hardly any traffic. In this post, I will share some general information about our hotel, the rental car, the roads, and the food (yes we enjoyed the food there!). And then in the following posts I will cover the sightseeing and other experiences. We stayed in a hotel called "Resorts World Langkawi". The primary reason we chose this hotel was the location. The hotel location is absolutely fantastic. Situated in a very scenic and quiet seaside place, just 10 minutes away from the busy market area, with beautiful sea views from our rooms. Our resort there, right on the seaside, (this boardwalk with a few restaurants was lively in the evenings with multiple food stalls, live music, fantastic views and sea breeze): ![]() Another reason the resort location was so convenient is there is a jetty right at the resort, and this is the departure point for many boat trips, including the popular sunset dinner cruises. We had booked a sunset dinner cruise on the first day there, and it was super convenient to just walk down from our room and board the sunset cruise right from our resort itself. Another view of the resort, and the jetty right in front of it (this is where many boat trips and sunset cruises depart from): ![]() Although the resort location was perfect, the resort is a bit old, and some of the areas are a bit rundown. It is an old heritage property (with that iconic heritage tower that you see in the picture above) converted into a hotel. We had what was called a "Premium Sea-view Suite" and this was very good and we had a great time staying there. This sea-view suite was in a relatively modern and nicer wing in the resort building, directly above the boardwalk, with proper sea views from the room. It was also very spacious and well-appointed. However, the other room categories are located in the older wings of the resort that looked much more rundown and with no sea views too. Therefore, I would recommend this resort only if one gets the sea-view suites in the modern wing. Else it is not worth staying there in the older wings which need some renovation. Bedroom in our suite with sea views: ![]() A separate living room with a large balcony (and there was also a separate kitchenette area which we never used at all): ![]() Views from our balcony: ![]() Food: We love to explore local and other global (non-Indian) cuisine when we travel outside India. Not because we do not love Indian food (we love it actually), but because we love so many different cuisines and traveling is the best opportunity to enjoy different cuisines. Langkawi, being a globally popular tourist destination, is full of restaurants of all types and cuisines - Malay, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Continental, and of course Indian. We are vegetarians (well, technically eggetarian, because we do eat eggs albeit occasionally), and we had absolutely no problem finding great vegetarian food in Langkawi. Let me share a few sample photographs of the variety of food we enjoyed. Local cuisine - rice rolls with vegetables and spicy sauce: ![]() Local cuisine - Malay curries with a couple of varieties of rice: ![]() In one authentic Chinese restaurant, fried rice with fried egg on top: ![]() Spaghetti Aglio e Olio with local twist (sort of a fusion dish): ![]() We love Italian food, and we found a couple of great Italian restaurants there. One top rated Italian restaurant was on the other side of the island, but thanks to having a rental car at hand, and great roads with very thin traffic, we could easily reach there in 20 minutes and we had some authentic and tasty Italian food there. Perfectly cooked ratatouille pasta: ![]() While walking around in the main market area, we came across an Arabic restaurant. Typically we stay away from Arabic restaurants because of lack of vegetarian options there. However, this time, the board outside caught my attention because it advertised some nice desserts, including my favorite, baklava. We went in just to try that baklava, and we found that they serve Turkish coffee too. And there we had the combination of a perfectly made Turkish coffee and delicious baklava. Turkish coffee and baklava, a delicious combination at an Arabic restaurant: ![]() Car: As I mentioned before, the island is very tiny and distances are very short. Even then, having a car at hand helped a lot because it avoided waiting for taxis (they have some local taxi apps there with dedicated taxi pick-up points; we noticed that people who booked taxis had to find these pick-up spots and wait there for a long time). Although distances are short, some of the roads are incredibly scenic and I enjoyed driving there. Since the purpose of renting car was only for short distance hopping around, I rented a basic and cheap car. Also, I wanted to drive a local brand there, just to try out something new to me. I picked up a car that was a local mass market favorite, Perodua Bezza. The size was perfect for just the two of us and it had large trunk that easily accommodated our luggage during to/from airport drives. My rental Perodua Bezza: ![]() While the size was perfect for us, the car was horribly underpowered. I do not know the exact engine specs to be sure, but from Wikipedia information, I assume that the variant we had was equipped with a 3-cylinder, 1.0L engine that made 67hp. This engine was coupled with a slow, lethargic and old-school 4-spped AT (from the terrible lag, I assume it was CVT, but not sure about that). The roads there are hilly, and on some of the inclines, the car struggled. On the other hand, speed limits there are very low. The highest speed limit anywhere in the island is 70km/h, even on the fast multi-lane highways. Thanks to these low speed limits, I was still able to drive at the speed limit and avoided further embarrassment. Keeping aside the underpowered part, the car was more than good enough for our needs. The rental process was extremely simple, quick, efficient and friendly, and overall it was a great experience dealing with the rental company and the process. Roads and traffic: Roads there are scenic and inviting to drive. There are some crowded city/market lanes in some pockets, but the rest are wide open, multi-lane roads with fantastic tarmac and proper lane markings and road signs (just like any developed country) and scenic views all around. Outside the small downtown area, at the rest of the places we saw almost zero traffic. And everyone followed the rules to the T, including speed limits. Basically exactly like what you would expect in any developed country! Thanks to those perfect roads and driving discipline, it was a breeze to drive around there, and I enjoyed the experience despite the underpowered car. One of the scenic sea-side roads that I loved driving back and forth on: ![]() Inviting corner with sea views and zero traffic (notice the speed limit here was only 30km/h): ![]() A windshield shot of one of the scenic roads, again with zero traffic: ![]() How small the island really is? After 6 days of driving around, including a couple of drives from one end of the island to another, the total distance I drove was just above 200km. Talking about the car and driving there, I had one comical and certainly unusual experience that I must share here. We drove to one beautiful rainforest resort restaurant for lunch, and parked the car there in their parking lot. It was a proper rainforest setting, with big, tall trees all around, a restaurant nestled in that forest, and again, zero crowds. Hardly anyone there. We parked the car. Went in the restaurant and had a relaxed, leisurely and delicious lunch, enjoying both the food and the serene forest setting. We had an open-air table with great views. There were plenty of birds, and even monkeys jumping around the trees. We were a bit scared of the monkeys, but they did not come close to us nor troubled us while we were having lunch. So all fine then. After the lunch, when we got back to the car and I sat in the driver's seat, ready to crank the engine, I glanced at the right side ORVM and was shocked to see this. Right side ORVM gone: ![]() It was absolutely shocking. It was all fine when we parked there. Hardly any other car around (the car you see next in the picture is the resort manager's car which came later to help us), and no chance of anyone hitting the mirror. The mirror was also cleanly gone. Not a single piece of broken mirror anywhere. It was a big mystery. I was searching around for the broken mirror, wondering what happened. A couple of staff saw us in that confused state, and came out to check what happened. They were extremely polite, friendly, and wanted to help us. When they saw it, they instantly knew what happened. What they told us then was unbelievable but true - the monkeys stole the mirror! They called the resort manager who arrived there in his own car in a couple of minutes, and was quite friendly too. Apparently it is quite common there, and it happens all the time to cars parked there. They told us about multiple instances. Apparently monkeys sit on the ORVM and shake it violently till the mirror comes out cleanly, and they run away with the mirror. No wonder neither the mirror nor the broken pieces were found anywhere. The manager suggested I call the car rental company and he offered to speak to them on my behalf to explain what happened. When I called the rental company, they were not surprised at all. They knew it too. The manager spoke to them and explained the location and some other details. Anyways, not sure what to do, I drove back to our hotel which was just 10 minutes drive on an empty road with zero traffic. So I could drive back fine. As soon as I reached the hotel, I got a call back from the renal company. And this is where I was super impressed with their customer service! They asked me where I was headed next, and offered to meet me at the next location with a brand new mirror to install it. And indeed, their person arrived at the next spot, with a sealed box of the OEM mirror (with proper OEM branding), and installed it for me right there. He was a nice guy and we chatted a bit. He was also not at all surprised. He said monkeys stealing mirrors was common there. That is why everyone folds their mirrors when they park there (not sure how that helps to safeguard from monkeys anyway). In a funny tone, he said that monkeys in Langkawi love to steal three things from parked cars, mirrors, wipers and number plates! Later I noticed many cars with mirrors missing (which is very strange in a place with zero traffic, wide open spaces, and zero chances of mirrors hitting anything), and now I knew the reason. Further, I noticed that most parked cars fold their mirrors, I also started folding the mirrors (manually, my cheap rental car had no electric folding option) wherever I parked the car after that. However, the superlative customer service by the car rental company deserves a special mention here. They were extremely supportive, polite and helpful in the whole episode. Top-class customer service! A parting shot of the rental car from a scenic sea-side road: ![]() And finally, a late evening view of our resort from the sea-side road: ![]() With that general information out of the way, let me share the stories and photographs from our Langkawi explorations in the posts below. | Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Cruises, Boats and Island HoppingThe most popular activities there include watersports and all kinds of boating experiences - from speedboats to jetskies, and from kayaks to yachts to large cruise ships, all kinds of boats! In fact, as much as I was surprised with the empty roads and the lack of traffic on the roads, I was surprised to see the sea full of boats in all directions! The water routes were extremely busy all day with plenty of boats moving around everywhere. We did a variety of boat rides and loved all of those. In fact, we actually spent more time on the boats than in our car, during our stay there. From small speedboats racing ahead crashing against the waves to large yacht cruising calmly in the sea, we experienced it all and loved it. The first evening we were there, we had booked a "Sunset Dinner Cruise". This was a great experience for sure. It helped that this cruise started from the jetty right next to our resort. This cruise is a ride on a nice yacht, that starts at about 4:30pm and goes on till about 8pm, with unlimited drinks, snacks and buffet dinner, live music, and of course, great sunset views as the yacht cruises around in the sea. Aboard the sunset cruise: ![]() Cruising around with sunset views and refreshing sea breeze was a great experience: ![]() Views of the sunset from the cruise: ![]() Views of our resort as the yacht returned to the jetty around 8pm: ![]() Another interesting experience was what is called "Island Hopping Tour". This is a half-day program in a speed boat, that takes you to multiple islands with some simple activity on each island. The islands were very scenic, and the boat ride itself was a lot of fun. Speeding down the sea, with the boat crashing on the waves and the wind blasting past you, and the cool water splashing all around, was an amazing experience in itself! Speed boats taking tourists around for island hopping: ![]() The boats followed some kind of unmarked lanes in the sea, and this nice cornering pattern is shows those lanes clearly: ![]() Also notice the traffic of boats on those lanes, and in the "parking lot" below. Boats parked near one of the islands: ![]() One of the many islands we visited and/or passed by during our island hopping, over multiple different trips there: ![]() Scenic views from one of the islands where the boat dropped us to spend an hour: ![]() Active watersports scene at one of the islands in the island hopping tour: ![]() Another unique boating experience was what is called "Mangroves Discovery Tour". This tour takes you in a boat, to explore the caves and mangroves, and some beautiful islands again, around an area known as Kilim Geoforest Park. This was a combination of boating and some wildlife exploration tour. The Kilim Geoforest area is home to many wildlife species. We were first taken to some bat caves, and then around thick mangroves. Of course, again, there are plenty of monkeys there (and almost everywhere in Langkawi), and those monkeys are quite bold and not afraid or shy at all. They snatch away water bottles or any visible food items. We were told they can even jump onto the boats. Overall a lot of care and precaution had to be taken to stay safe from the monkeys there. Boat rides through mangroves: ![]() We saw plenty of bats and birds there. However, what was more shocking was this sight of a pit viper on a tree, very close to our boat. Pit viper on a tree: ![]() It was a guided tour and our tour guide was an expert on wildlife and forests. He gave us a lot of information on the forest, the wildlife and the snakes. While he was telling us that there are many snakes there and that sighting of the pit viper was not rare at all, on another tree, just a bit ahead, we saw another pit viper. One more pit viper: ![]() We meandered through these mangroves, through thick trees, saw plenty of birds, and then entered open sea waters to see this iconic sign on a hill near the sea. The iconic Kilim Geoforest Park sign: ![]() Out of the mangroves, out in the open sea now, for another island hopping experience: ![]() Scenes from another island hopping leg now: ![]() And we reached this scenic island, which was apparently in-between the borders of Thailand and Malaysia, and technically in "no man's land" (international waters), according to our guide: ![]() The scenic island in the international waters (we got "Welcome to Thailand" message from Airtel on our phones there): ![]() While returning via a river merging into the sea, our lunch stop was at a "floating restaurant" in the middle of the scenic river. The floating restaurant, our lunch stop: ![]() The tables with river views: ![]() This restaurant served simple Malay food, and our vegetarian lunch had this simple but delicious combo (along with soup, fruits, and a nice lemonade): ![]() We absolutely loved all these boating experiences, and the scenic views we saw all around, all day long, certainly form a nice memory from this vacation. | Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Cable Cars, Skybridge, and other Tourist SpotsAmong all the "tourist places" we visited there, the highlights were the Cable Car ("SkyCab"), and the couple of thrilling mountain places called "Skybridge" and "Skywalk". Another place with mesmerizing 360-degree views from atop is a tower called "Maha Tower". However, before those places, let me comment on probably the busiest area of Langkawi, called "Pantai Cenang" (which translates to Cenang Beach). This is the main shopping and marketplace area alongside a busy and crowded beach, dotted with numerous hotels, resorts and restaurants. Most Langkawi tourism sites and online travel articles recommend one to stay in one of the numerous hotels and resorts dotted around this beach. However, we were glad we ignored those recommendations and did not stay here! While the streets are lively and nice, and offer good food options (from street food to cafes to fine dining) and shopping experience, and we enjoyed walking up and down these streets exploring the cafes and the shops, the beach itself was a disappointment. The beach was crowded, with tightly packed resorts and restaurants on the side, and it had no natural beauty at all. 20 minutes is all we could spend there and we never went back to that beach again. I am so glad we did not stay in one of those crowded beach resorts there. The resort we actually stayed at was an order of magnitude more quiet, clam, and more scenic than any of the hotels or resorts in this main area. Anyways, in those 20 minutes we managed to spend there, one thing that I found interesting was presence of so many 4x4 vehicles on the beach. Some of these 4x4 trucks were for the water sport activities, while some of them appeared private vehicles driven down by their owners. Lot of people were towing their boats using their 4x4 trucks. Saw many nice 4x4 trucks (some new and some quite old) while walking around on that beach. An old Nissan Pathfinder: ![]() Toyota Hilux, which were the most common 4x4 trucks there: ![]() Nissan Navara, another common sighting there: ![]() And older Hilux towing a boat: ![]() An old Mitsubishi Pajero (loved the timeless design): ![]() Apart from these 4x4 trucks, there was nothing interesting on that crowded beach. One place that we actually enjoyed, and spent a memorable evening at, was a tall tower called "Maha Tower". This is a popular tourist spot, with a tower offering a sky-deck and 360-degree views from the top, and a buzzing marketplace at the bottom. A concept that is very common in many other cities too. For example, it reminded me of the Kobe Port Tower, in Kobe, Japan (covered in my old travelogue on Kobe). Night view of the "Maha Tower", with a popular night market at the bottom: ![]() This tower had a very interesting "sunset view ticket". The ticket included a couple of hours time (specifically during sunset) in a lounge on 18th floor with breathtaking sea and sunset views all around, and some snacks and soft-drinks arranged in the lounge. Further, it also included a tour of the sky-deck on 33rd floor, with glass flooring and even more breathtaking sea views from 33rd floor. Lounge on the 18th floor, with amazing views, snacks and soft-drinks included: ![]() Sea views from the 18th floor: ![]() Sunset views from the lounge: ![]() The sky-deck on the 33rd floor (with a scary glass floor): ![]() Mesmerizing sunset views from the 33rd floor sky-deck: ![]() View of the popular night-market at the bottom (this had plenty of street food stalls; almost half the stalls were food stalls): ![]() The other major tourist attraction in Langkawi is a mountain point consisting of SkyCab (cable car), a Skywalk and a Skybridge. Typically we avoid tourist places but this was one of those rare tourist places which was indeed very good and we loved the experience. The "SkyCab", cable cars that take you up the hill, while offering amazing sea views: ![]() The cable car ride itself was thrilling enough, and offered thrilling views of the hills and the seas all around. However, the major attractions are two places this cable car takes you to, one is a glass flooring, "floating" walk called "Eagle's Next Skywalk", and another is the famous landmark - the Skybridge which is a small walking bridge high above a valley in the hills. The Eagle's Next Skywalk, which is one of the in-between points in the SkyCab ride: ![]() This Skywalk was a super thrilling experience. You walk around on a glass floor, many hundred feet above the deep valley below, and offering 360 view from the glass sides of the Andaman sea. The thrilling Skywalk: ![]() The glass flooring was super scary; you feel like you are stepping directly into the valley several hundred feet below, and it was indeed a scary experience to walk here: ![]() The next stop, the cable car station on the top of the hill, from where you hike down to that bridge known as Skybridge: ![]() A closer view of the Skybridge, a walking bridge across the valley: ![]() Views of the Andaman sea and the cable cars (the view from the cable cars itself was magical for sure): ![]() Walking on the Skybridge: ![]() Another view of the hanging Skybridge: ![]() Finally, the last tourist spot we visited was the famous "Dataran Lang" or the "Eagle Square", with that large Eagle Statue which has become sort of the identification sign of Langkawi now. This statue is located a sea-side park complex, with again good views of the sea, a jetty terminal with multiple small boat rides and even some large long distance cruise services, and a shopping center. The "Eagle", the most identifiable place in Langkawi: ![]() Last edited by Dr.AD : 14th January 2025 at 11:41. |

| Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Epilogue (and Sunrises)While we did visit the tourist places mentioned above, one of the most memorable experiences from this vacation was just enjoying the views from our resort itself. Our room had a fantastic sea view from our balcony. And the resort had an infinity pool right outside our room, offering even nicer views. Our balcony and the infinity pool both faced east, and that meant these were ideal spots to watch the sunrise. Every day we were there, we woke up early and spent an hour enjoying the cool, calm and serene sunrise from these vantage points. Watching the colors in the sky change from before sunrise to past sunrise was a mesmerizing natural show. We loved it every day we were there. Best seats for the sunrise show, right outside our room: ![]() Colorful skies several minutes before the sunrise: ![]() Boats started their day early, and the skies and the boat offered nice landscapes: ![]() Could not resist sharing one more photo of pre-sunrise sky and a boat: ![]() Finally, the actual sunrise moment: ![]() Overall we had a great vacation in Langkawi, and loved the variety of experiences we had and the sights we saw. | Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Lovely photos indeed. I visited Langkawi 2 years ago and it was a memorable two days. I had got myself a self-drive car and it was so convinient to move around the island and cover most of the important landmarks. I had got a Nissan Sunny automatic. It was sluggish to perform but it was good overall. I was shocked that fuel was so much cheaper in Malaysia in general. For those planning to visit , one can get good deals on chocolates since it is a duty free island. So you can buy lots of chocolates and other items at really cheap prices. In general roads in Malaysia (mainland and islands) are very well maintained and road discipline is fair. I highly recommend visiting Malaysia especially Penang and Langkawi apart from Kuala Lumpur. |

| Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Lovely pics and travelogue, reminded me of my trip in 2001 and coincidentally I stayed at the same hotel and it still looks the same. Only downside no beach. Good thing you have a lot of options now at the restaurants i suppose, earlier we only had Roti Kanai and fruits as we were veg. Been planning for a trip and your travelogue just accelerated that. Will remind to keep the mirrors closed when i park my car, that was funny indeed. Senior - BHPian ![]() | Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Wow super refreshing pics. Langkawi is a laid back place and i am glad it has stayed that way. I went there 10 years ago and had a rental Proton Saga. It was solidly built and we used it for 150 kms in 2 days. We had taken a ferry ride from Penang to Langkawi and it was beautiful as we neared Langkawi islands. Cable car ride to top of hill was the best attraction 10 year ago. Langkawi has evolved and its good to see new attractions added there. I would highly advise this over Penang. After KL this is a must visit destination IMO. | Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Thanks everyone for liking the pictures and for sharing your experiences! Agree with all of you that it is a nice place for vacation. Yes, Penang is also a very nice place. I have been there earlier and had a great time there too. Quote:
However, in practice, it is not required if you have your home country license in English. Anyways, IDP is now merely a certified English translation of your domestic driving license. In my case, I had taken an IDP (booklet format in multiple languages). However, the car rental company never asked for it or even saw it. They asked only my Indian driving license, which is a smart-card in English, and they said that is enough. Hope that answers your question. Last edited by Dr.AD : 15th January 2025 at 16:01. | |

| Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Thanks Dr. AD for the wonderful travelogue and a photologue. In all honesty, when I see one coming from you, I can safely use the same line every time. Its a pleasure to read through your write ups always. What a wonderful way to start the new year and what a beautiful resort to spend the first weekend. Amazing views of the vast seas. That part of the world is really beautiful especially when it comes to the sea view for sure. And what a funny incident with Monkeys stealing the mirrors. I wonder what happens to all those stolen mirrors, seems the monkeys would have a "Sheeshmahal" of their own by now ![]() Thanks again for sharing the trip with us. Looking forward to many more from your side. Deb |

| Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia Lovely Travelogue. Brought back memories of Langkawi - Penang - Kuala Lumpur trip i did last September. The eagle square was closed during that time, luckily on last few days of our trip it opened ! Coincidently we stayed in the same resort, have some nice drone footages which I will share later ![]() |

| Re: Sun, sea and boat rides! Vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia I was there from 24th to 28th December as well. Nice laid back place. Stayed at Casa Del Mar, pretty good but a bit overpriced. I did not rent a car but did hit up Grab rides a few times Overall it is a great place to visit. |
