3) And main thing, remember to keep your passport with you, because it will get you a sizeable reduction in price. Taxes will be waived off because you would be taking the product out of Japan. Sort of like the VAT exemption you get when buying products in EU and taking them out (re-export).
When I have been to Japan back in 1999, the shops at Akihabara used to sell the local "Jap only" versions in Ground Floors and the International versions used to be sold in the First floor and above. The duty exemption was only available when you buy the International versions.

I think now its not the case. It just depends on the type of visa you have on your passport. If its work visa, then you cannot claim those, but if it is visitors you can claim the duty exemption irrespective of the version you buy.

actually it has nothing to do with the type Visa. also you can not get deal discount and duty free discount together. and if you do some good research, you can get upto 20% discount deals on electronics.

1. Subway : appartment to Shinagawa Station.
2. JR Rail(Yamanote Line) : Shinagawa to Shinjuku
3. Romance Express Train : Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto.
4. Hakone Trozan Bus : Hakone-Yumoto. to Motohakone-ko
5. Cruise Boat : Motohakone-ko to Togenadi (on Lake Ashi).
6. Hakone Ropeway : Togenadi to Owakudani(eat smoked eggs on volcacno) and then Sounzan
7. Hakone Tozan Cable car : Sounzan to Gora
8. Hakone Tozan Train : Gora to Hakone-Yumuto
9. JR Line : from Yumuto to Odawara:
10. Another JR Line : Odawara to Shinagawa

Hakone Ropeway is the only dicy route as it depends on the Wind and they close it on high wind.

Bharat, I lived in Tokyo for a year during 2005/06. I did this route in the reverse direction with my family. one of the best trips that I had in Japan.

If you are going to Kamakura, don't miss to watch the sunset from the other side of Enoshima island. It is a tough climb down the steep steps but is worth it - especially if it happens to be a clear day!

Rajiv, Jango,

Some of the off beat places that I visited when I lived in Tokyo

1. Mt.Mitake - An excellent trekking area with a beatiful Buddhist temple on top of a hill. You take the Chuo line from Shinjuku - the yellow trains and travel towards Ome. It will be a 100 minute ride to Mitake station. From the station take a bus to the rope car station and then a chair lift to the start of the trek. Check this URL for more details - Tokyo Travel: Mitakesan (Mount Mitake)

2. A ride across the Chiba peninsula in single car mountain rail - this is best during fall or early spring. attached excel has the route plan that I used in early May 06.
Note: Kameido station mentioned in this plan is on the Akihabara - Narita Line.
