If you are animal crazy this is the rite time to vist this place , in summer you know the inner forest will be dry and the animals will come out to feed themselves , it sbetter not to take families , its not a place that we can plan a family trip , its a dare to go place.

Foby, you are snaps are too inviting. I have been here sometime in 98, hardly any tourists were there then.. Enjoyed the drive from Pothundy in our diesel ambassador and the drive back at night.. Heard the roads were washed out during last year and vehicles got stuck etc.. Are the roads restored now?

Dear Foby,

This route looks really good. I have been to many places in my Gypsy but this route looks like worth exploring. It looks like much more challenging than the old Aluva-Munnar Road. Can we get any special permission to take our own 4x4s ?

Among many forest road in Kerala I think the Athirapally - Sholayar road is one of the best to spot animals, especially at right, though some times it is dangerous. My uncle has spotted two leopards crossing the road. I have taken this route (the tarmac road) many times. The route was: Cochin-Chalakudy-Athirampally-Sholayar-Aliyar Dam-Parambikulam. But never been through the off road route you have mentioned.

I really want to take my own vehicle; it gives you more freedom, gets the adrenaline pumping and boosts our spirit of adventure.

Great photos, foxy.sebastian.
vak, I doubt if you will be allowed to drive the Chalakudy-Valparai road at night (unless you are a local). I have been stopped at the Peringalkuthu Dam check post (after Athirapalli), and I think till the Malakkiparai check post (TN border, near Valparai), night driving between 9 pm and 5 am is restricted. In any case, the road is so narrow and the jungles teeming with elephants that I do not think it will be safe. I have heard some gruesome stories about vehicles being gored by tuskers on this route at night.
