Pics! My Mumbai - Udipi trip.

Here are a few pics of my trip to Udipi last week. Since this is my native place, we travel there very often and always by road (Bus or Car). This time we went by bus cos it would not have been feasible for 3 to travel in a Qualis. The bus as always was Volvo - Canara Pinto and the seat as always (again) was No 1 or 2 i.e. the one right behind the driver cos it gives a view of the entire road. We left at around 02:30 PM on 9th Nov from Mumbai (Andheri) and till around 05:30 PM we were still picking up passengers from Sion, Dadar, etc etc. The drive was good and we reached our destination (Udipi - > Kallianpur) at 06:30 AM the next day.
I didnt want to spend my day sitting at home and we went around visiting a lot of places. We didnt have our own vehicle so the only option was either a rick or the local bus. There were tourist vehicles too but then at almost twice / thrice the price of a rick, it was not worth it. So most of the times we travelled by rick although they can be a pain and very uncomfortable on bad roads.

Day 1 : We went to some places around Udipi - Kemmanu, Kallianpur etc. As was said to me Kemmanu or Udipi i'm not sure is made up of 7 islands which are connected to each other by hanging bridges (for pedestrain and even motorcycles). Needless to say I was looking around in all the houses which had a drive-in or a garage if I could spot anything unusual. In one of the houses I happened to spot 2 Ambassador's facing each other. On looking carefully I realised that one of them was a Landmaster (identified through the grille) I stopped the rick and walked into the house and I was surprised to see a "Dukkar" Fiat and a Morris Minor convertible standing next to them. I spoke to the owners wife who informed me that the owner has just purchased these cars recently. He also has plans to purchase any 50's Merc. Took some pics of the cars but have been requested not to post them on the Internet. I had a look at all the 3 cars and they were in pretty good condition. The car I had earlier identified as a Landmaster was actually an Ambassador. It had the Landmaster grille in the front but didnt have a rounded boot at the rear. The car had wipers, interiors, steering wheel with "H" logo like the Landmaster though. The car did not have Landmaster badge on the front fenders. It had an Ambassador badge on the front and rear. Since the owner was out of the country I have left him a note inviting him to join Team-BHP.

Malpe Ship building Yard - Tebma Shipyards Limited
I have no knowledge on ships and yards and dont know how long it takes to build any. Here are some pics of Tebma Shipyard in Mar 08 and Nov 08. In Mar, the place was just a skeletal structure but now they've built a proper body around it. It is said to have been built at a cost of around 30 crores and should be having an output of around 4 boats per year.

St Mary Island

We had been to Malpe beach earlier this year but because of time constraints we could not visit St Mary Island. I had heard that its a "must visit" place if your're visiting Malpe. The island is around 3 kms from Malpe port and there are ferries every hour starting from 10 AM to 4 PM. The tickets are sold for Rs 70/-. It takes around 30-45 minutes to reach the island. The trip to the island is a very scenic one as it passes by the gateway to the sea and the Light House. Once you reach the island, you have to hop onto another smaller boat since the waters around the island are too shallow for big boats to go.
The island itself does not have any facilities except for a few shed's where you can rest. There are no hotels, restaurants whatsoever so you have to carry your own food supply incase you're planning on a picnic or a long stay.

It is Udupi, I can barely read Devanagari, not done it since 10th grade. Although I have seen non-locals use Udipi, apparently it is one of the eariler variations. Really old people call it Od-Pu.

hey v12 thanks for bringing back some memories from my recent trip to Coastal Karnataka, they are still fresh in my mind. How is that you never posted a single pic of National Horror -17 ?

Also have the roads opp' the Udupi bus stand been done up ? I remember the road leading from the bus-stand to Manipal was in shambles.
