Hassan route is the best. Take that, agree with the others here.
But do your research, the sign boards are misleading or missing once you get off the major highways.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I did the Bangalore-Tumkur-Birur-Kemmangundi-Chikmagalur route on the onward journey and the Chikmagalur-Hassan-Neelamangala-Bangalore on the return. The trip was fantastic with some breathtaking scenary even in summer. Will come up with my detailed travelogue soon. The roads definitely better on the Hassan route as suggested by a lot of team-bhpians above.

Any advise on options to stay in/near Chikmagalur?

Most places i've seen online are really around 1500 types per person per night. I'm looking for something like 500-750 per person per night or so... basically a clean decent but not exhorbitantly priced place, neither a seedy place... Good enough for a family.

Any tips will be appriciated.

Thanks

Ravi

Just back from Chikmaglur, dont have to tell about the scenic beauty there...my driving just got improved
narrow roads lots of curves and to top it all when it gets foggy driving would be a big challenge!

Thanks :)

Hi akroy

Thanks as usual - maybe i should just drop you emails instead of writing to this forum Why don't you just write a book on your travels.
I'll be the first to buy it as an indispensable road-guide.

Let me take the opportunity to ask more questions ...
As part of my Chikmagalur/Kemmanagundi trip (whenever it finally materializes) which would be a more advisable route:

BLR - Kunigal - Channarayapatna - Hassan - Belur - Chikmagalur (then maybe Kemmanagundi)

OR

BLR - Tumkur - Tiptur - Arsikere - Kadur - Chikmagalur

OR

BLR - Tumkur - Tiptur - Arsikere - Kadur - Tarikere - Kemmanagundi - Chikmagalur

My apologies for such basic questions - this is the first really (potentially) long drive on indian roads..

Regards

Ravi

I would suggest, go via Tumkur route if you are staying in Kemmanagundi or otherwise too...visit Muliyangiri and then come back to Chikamagalur and return via Belur - hassan route...
By doing this, you will see most of the scenic views of the district...

I am going to Kemmanagundi next weekend.

Is 2 days enough or should I book room for monday also, considering the travel?

Good places to stay in Kemmanagundi/ Chikmagalur?
