Salamat Datang - Malaysia, Truely Asia...

When: 8th March 2009 To 13th March 2009
Where: Penang, Malaysia
Hotel: G Hotel

So, now I am back to a foreign land. This time its again the Asain country. Malaysia. Hmm, actually not a travelogue, but just thought of sharing the experiance I had in Penang during this visit.

Although I have already visited this country, I never had a chance to visit Penang. This time, I got the oppurtunity for that. I reach Penang through air via Kaulalumpur from Bangalore. You need to complete the Immigration procedures in KL itself.

Leaving Kuala Lumpur

Reaching Penang

Salamat Datang - Malaysia, Truely Asia...-temp1.jpg

Then take the domestic terminal and reach Penang. Its just an hour flight. By the time you finish the Wafer & Peanut they provide, you will asked to fasten the seat belt for landing!!!

There you go, Landing

I reach here at 10am. Passed through the customs and arrived the arrival hall. You have a prominent Taxi Service booth waiting to serve you. Went to the place and booked a taxi for my hotel. Its G-Hotel in George Town. They charged my 38MYR. Good system. Its a pre-paid service and you show the slip to the cab driver outside and he drops you to the destination. Hassle free trip.

Hotel Lobby

When I reach the hotel, initially the receptionist mentions that the room is not ready and will be available only by 2pm since its the Check-in time. I was wondering what to do. It was just 11am. Anyway, even before I complete the formalities, she said only one King size room is ready and I can check-in if I am ok. A big smile in my face. Get the key, Oops card, go the 11th Floor where my room is. 11'o clock in 11th floor

It was a wonderful room and had a good view to the ocean as well. Time to refresh. Called my home, informed about my safe arrival and refreshed myself.

Went out for a short walking in the hot sun. I noticed that the traffic even at this time (12noon) is too much. No space to walk or cross the road also. Probably because of the Sunday fever. Not sure.

Then joins my co-worker from US. Around 2pm, we both started to explore the location. We wanted to have something to eat on the road side and ence we walk along the beach. We found a good place called Coffee island for lunch. It took almost 1 hour to get our food. Then we again started to walk along the same beach and clicking the pics.

Some amature trying for the Panaromic view

We tried a little bit of this and that and some was really good. When we were really hungry we deciced to get to the hotel for the dinner. it as a pretty nice restaurant. Almost empty. We went and I had Cumin Fish Fillet. Umm, it was delicious. My friend had some Green soup with chicken. It was late night when we are done, went straight to sleep.

I go to Penang a lot on work

Check out gurney drive - seafood

Penang hill (I have not been there but it is worth a trip)

Evening - Batu Ferangi about 35-40 RM cab ride - beaches , eating and a night market. Bargain hard

Penang reminds me of Bangalore of old - quiet and peaceful. Try and see what is called Baba House in Geargetown - an old noble mans house

Shopping - good bargains at the complex behind KOMTAR and Bukit Jumbat (sounds something like that)

Awesome pictures especially the panoramic ones. The sky is looking so nice, perfect weather for photos, it seems.

Been to Malaysia 4-5 times but, never visited Penang. I somehow got stuck with Langkawi and other closer sojourn-Genting Highlands.

Yes boss. I stayed in G-Hotel, which is in the Gurney drive. Yes, awesome seafood restaurants. One famous one had everything under the sea in their tanks. You pick, they prepare
Visited Penand hill, infact my avatar pics was taken there. Could not get time for the Batu ferangi. May be next time.

I guess it should take around 1Hr 30min from Penang to Langkawi in ferry. But due to the fixed timing of the ferry and lack of time for us we could not try those. Mostly in next visit. Hopefully!!!

Penang is full of our famous Hindu temples. The Balamurugan temple near the Botanical garden is very famous for Thai Pusam. And seems its celebrated irrespective of the nationality. My clients who are mostly Chinese in there, mentioned they also participate in those festival. Great unity.

The next day was a Public Holiday there, Eventhough it was public holiday , we could not go out anywhere in the first part of the day. We were busy working for the demo to be shown the next day. Later in the afternoon, thought of exploring Penang. So decided to go to the Chinese temple called Kek Lok Shi temple.

It is around 10-12 KMs from the hotel where we stayed. We took a taxi and reached there in around 40min. There mostly none of the taxi puts meter. Its all flat rate for each palces depending on the area you are in.

The temple was having huge number of Buddha. Everywhere you turn and you will find these statues of different sizes. Said to be around 10,000 Buddhas.

Some pics from the temple.

There are 2 important places you need to see you visit here. One is the Pagoda and the other is the huge statue of Goddess of Mercy which was made of bronze and gifted by China to Penang. It is 30m in height.

Currently construction work is going on for providing a roof to this statue. The roof will be hold by 6 giant pillars. The temple is collecting funds for finishing that roof. So, if you pay 30RM, you can write the name on one of the roof slabs. So I paid and had my names and family member names in one of the slab.

Can you spot me in this?

Some arts around the temple

Then planned to visit Penang hill. We could not get any taxi from the temple. So, we need to walk down the hill and followed the signs to the Penang Hill station. But when we reached the station it was almost 6:30pm and hence we did not make it to the top. We thought we could have good view in day light and hence decided to give it a try sometime later of the week.
