Wow, i am getting nostalgic. I remember my school taking us for a picnic here long back. Haven't been to Malshej since. The MTDC resort is pretty neat too. Too difficult to get a room on weekends in this season though.

Thats nice pic. That place in varandha ghat is near vaghjai devi temple where lot of tea stalls are placed.
The pinackle spot is the border of pune and raigad district.
At that exact place, there is fort named kavlya.

Day 2

After completing morning rituals, we were ready to go Naneghat.
I had made sure that everyone had heavy breakfast as i was aware that lunch was not possible in the remote area where we were heading.
Our original plan was to go to Vaishakhere village at the foot of Malshej ghat by bus, from there climb the naneghat by trek, call the bus via other route at the top of Naneghat and head toward Baramati.
We scraped this plan as visibility was very low due to mist.
We planned to head directly at the top of neneghat by bus.
We started at 9:30am toward naneghat.
I was aware that there is shortcut to naneghat via morgiri but status of road was questionmark.
Enquired about road condition at village madh.
People there assured us that though road is not good, our bus will manage the road.
Started our bone rattling journey toward naneghat via morgiri, anjanawale.
It is internal road at very remote place.
One advice, people coming from malshej ghat to naneghat by car, don't ever try this road or be ready for car insurance claim.
Reached to the village ghatgar which is gateway to naneghat.
Naneghat is just 4 km from this village.
Uptill, the road was tared with lot of potholes and rough surface.
See the pics.

It was 10:30 am and we were at the junction of road leading to naneghat and ghatghar.
one oldish man was standing there. Inquired about further road to him.
I requested him to show the route and naneghat and he happily agreed.
During conversation, he suggested us to trek the jivdhan fort, climb down to other side and head to naneghat.
All people happily agreed to this plan.
We ordered food to that farmer.
He sent his nephew to accompany us as guide.

Little about jivdhan fort.

Quote:
From Ghatghar village, one way goes to Naneghat and the other goes to the fort. Its much better till one reaches the steps. Some of the steps have been destroyed and it has become slippery. From here we can reach the eastern part of the fort in 2 hours.
The terrain in Maharashtra is highly uneven, and is primarily divided as coastal plains and eastern plateau. These are connected by ghats. Sixty such ghats exist in Sahyadri, and they have played a major role as commercial routes. Huge forts guarded each of them. The whole range that has been guarding the ancient commercial route of Naneghat for thousands of years includes the forts of Jeevdhan, Hadsar, and Mahishgad & Chavand. Jivdhan lies at the mouth of Naneghat, and is a quite tougher one. Moreover it is famous for the pinnacle Vandarlingi.
The whole range of these forts originated during the rule of Satvaahan era. This is clear from the entrances carved out in stone. The fort stands at an important position and most important guard of Naneghat. From here any help to Naneghat could reach in less time. It was under Bahmani control and after that it went to Nizamshah. In 1636, Nizamshahi declined. Shahajiraje rescued Murtiza, the last Nizam from Jivdhan and took with him to the fort of Pemgiri. But he was trapped by Mughals and had to hand him over to them. This was the end of Nizamshahi. In 1818, the British captured all the forts here and destroyed them. Jivdhan too became a victim and the main entrance was destroyed. Even today the marks of those wounds cannot go unnoticed as we climb the fort....source: sahyadri.com

Our plan was climb the fort from eastern side[left in pic] and come down by western side[ right in pic].
Everyone was ready for this trek.
Everyone carried one waterbottle.
We started this trek exactly at 11:15am.
Now, lets pic talk.

At 1:30pm, we started to descend the fort from western side.
There is one tower like pinnacle adjacent to fort named khada parsi or wanarlingi[ penis of monkey].
I was eager to see that natural wonder.
Guide told me that i can get close look in between while going down.
This route is tough to negotiate.
It has sheer angle of descend, rock patches, jungle trail and what not.
Look at the pics.

We all were too tired to walk.
Everyone took rest at that point.
It was plane land in between main cliff of sahyadri and fort.
We still had to walk some 3 to 4 km to reach naneghat.

After short rest, we started toward naneghat.
We were walking at the edge of main cliff of sahyadri.
To our left side, we were overlooking Thane district.
Look at the pic.
Small guest house at the top right corner of pic belong to the actor Mr. Milind Gunaji.
Monsoon masti: Malshej ghat, Jivdhan fort and Naneghat.-h-264.jpg

Guide told us that its just 10 min walk upto naneghat but it turned out to be more than 3 km walk.
Uptill now, one thing i missed was snakes.
But.... one 8 to 10 feet long cobra appeared and disappeared quickly. I could not get pic.
After tiresome walk, at 3:45pm, we were at the mouth of naneghat.

Little about naneghat.

Quote:
Naneghat (Marathi: नाणेघाट) is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats range near Junnar in Pune district of Maharashtra, India. During the reign of the Satavahana (200 BCE–190 CE), the pass was extensively used as a trade route between Kalyan and Junnar.[1] Literally, the name nane means "coin" and ghat means "pass". The name is given because this path was used as a tollbooth to collect toll from traders crossing the hills.Located at @#19#19°18′23″N 73°40′48″E / 19.3064°N 73.6799°E / 19.3064; 73.6799, at an altitude of 750 m (2,461 ft), the non-motorable pass still serves as a shortcut between the Konkan region and the Deccan by inhabitants of the area. A number of ancient man-made caves have been crafted in the vicinity of the pass. The nearest inhabited area on the Konkan side is Vaishakhare 14 km (9 mi), and the village of Ghatghar 6 km (4 mi) on the plateau side......source: wikipedia.
Naneghat is India's first toll road.
Anyone who uses this route had to pay one coin as toll.
That toll is collected in one large stone pot at the start of this pass.

It was almost 4:15 pm.
Now, we realized that we are hungry, thirsty and tired.
It was time to run back and grab some food that was ordered to that farmer.
