an epic for sure

as per tanveer his journey is only 1/3rd done but its already taken a shape of a "grand epic". Interestingly today my parents forgot reading the 'Ramayana'(a ritual during navratras at our home) while being glued to the pics of Hanle.

someday i hope us mortals will be able to go where you have gone

Thanks Tanveer for sharing such awesome pics.

To be precise, after Nubra and Pangong Travelogue was 1/3 done, now its 1/2 done. After this leg, it will be almost 2/3 done.
And thanks for your complement. I never thought this log could make people forget stuff to do!!

Good morning Hanle

Unlike the cloudy windy night, the morning is pretty clear. Well almost.
Clouds are scattered all over, but sun does manage to shine.
Inspite of this, its very cold. Today its going to be the coldest and highest start for the white elephant.
But before such tasks, its time to feed ourselves.
Todays plan is sketchy and we do not know where we will get food etc.,
So its time to stuff ourselves up with heavy breakfast. Since its served at 8:30am, our start is delayed slightly, and its around 9am, that I crank the behemoth.

Surprise of surprises, she starts on first crank, but knowing whats in store for the whole day, she decides not to really start
So she sounds like a diesel bullet now, lumping at 500 rpm.
black smoke belches out of the exhaust, and all the onlookers run away scurrying for cover.
I let her idle
Slowly slowly the rpm starts rising, 600-700-800. Its almost 2 minutes after she starts her grrr grr routine, the needle dancing all the way from 700-1200

The road is waiting. Today is going to be the longest ride up here.

And with a prayer and hope of lakes, we start the journey.....

TO BE CONT..........

The road to Nyoma

Sun shining, albeit intermittently, we set off for Nyoma. Today it was not raining. So progress will be slow, as there will be more photogrphy breaks

First shot of the day
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-655332970_sja2yl.jpg

Remember the small red spec yesterday, here it is, in it full glory. Its a red bulldozer, and its clean. Going by the condition of the road, it has never been used
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-655333828_wchhzl.jpg

We also see a few Changpa Tents. Changpas are the guys you should thank for your Pashmina shawls. Pashmina does not come from Sheep ,but Goat. Our goats are not hairy enough, but these goats can give the best sheep a run for their money, and they do so. The Pashmina shawl retails for much more than your top of the line sweater, and it does not have to rely on some designers sticker to do so, the material itself is enough

Meanwhile the scenery remains the same, a riot of colors. The camera actually falls short in covering the actual view. Hanle is like another planet.

More scenery

The white elephant
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-656639861_nmqnnl.jpg

Finally its time for some wildlife. Though we do not see the crane, the Kiangs oblidge us

One even goes cantering forward across the path. Too bad we did not have a video camera. The grace with which these asses trot will make a Persian horse weep in shame. Their walk is more like a dance.
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-656642962_xf64ml.jpg

The clouds paint pictures in the sky
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-656643631_rwscfl.jpg

And the road goes on and on. Black silky Tarmac finally, 20kms of pain are over!

And then we see the next animal. The Yak. 55mm reach is simply not enough
5000kms and 12 Passes, a 20 day wild wild ride to the roof of the world!-657140143_qzyvll.jpg

Its time to go 300mm, but as they as there is no end to reach in wildlife photography!

The road to Nyoma CONT....

The Kiangs seemed to me as very "rangeen" animals. Colorful, if you understand what I mean.
Mostly they were a couple, with some Kinkier ones being in groups of 3.
There were a few lone samples too, but mostly it was twosome or threesome

More Kiang, one Kiang chasing other. Male chasing female? I dunno, Need 600mm lens for that.

the Wildlife was not the only interesting thing. Even more wonderful was the landscape.
You must have heard of nilgiris, the blue mountains, but have you seen Blue, red, green, brown, white and black mountains together?

The road!

Remember what I said about groups of 2 or 3. Even when there is a large herd, they congregate in groups of 2 or 3. This is one esp kinky group

you know, in this region, its difficult to select what to click, and what to look at. Everywhere you look, its different

Inspite of not losing way like yesterday, its takes us little less than 2.15 hours to reach Nyoma.

From here, its time to head to Kyun Tso...... Time for some adventure, and time to leave the lovely paved road.....

Do go on....

This is not fair

Hey TSK,

This is not fair - I mean leaving us in the lurch like this till Tuesday. I agree with @Bapu and am sure you will hear more voices like us. You should at least finish upto Kyun Tso.
