A great travellogue amip. It goes on to prive that Sex/ Age is immaterial, you just need to have the same interests. A bike trip to these areas scares the hell out of most people who take it on themselves to dissuade you at every step.

However, there is no "bachav" from this "keeda" once it has bitten you.

BTW most fuel stations in the area only sell premium fuels. They take full advantage of the fact there are hardly any options available .

Just don't ask me to get over my fear of bikes --- that would be too much all in one go. I'll just have to wait for the landslides to be bulldozed

JISPA

It was late evening by now. Even windier than earlier. I felt slightly dizzy when sitting down & chatting with other travelers but ignored it. We came down for dinner & in between the meal my dizziness got so bad that I started to have a blackout – alarmed I excused myself early & went back to the room. There, everything started to get worse – the nausea was almost unbearable, my stomach was complaining and as the night wore on there was absolutely no reprieve. I had anticipated a headache at best and had decided to ignore it if that happened – but this was far worse than I had imagined – with the bulk of the trip still ahead of us and the mighty passes yet to come. I couldn’t believe that I was getting strong symptoms of AMS at Jispa – an altitude which I didn’t really consider high at all!

The symptoms were just getting worse - & I made the worst decision of my life – I started to chicken out! All my reading on AMS came back to me about retreating to lower altitudes if the symptoms kept getting worse & if I had to die - I knew that I did not want to die in Jispa and definitely “another day”!

I somehow gathered up the courage to talk to Amit & he was extremely supportive saying that if I didn’t feel any better by morning – we would go back to Manali & then from there to Srinagar – trying the other route out. That cheered me up a bit – but by morning I could barely walk.

You were hit by AMS very badly, hope you recovered quickly .
What after the morning ?Did you manage to get through the day ?

Excuse me, but what is AMS? Even since the Yanks have spread their acronyms all over the world, things are getting real tough for an old-timer like me.
The first thing that struck me was the AMS contract for my water filter

Methinks now it has something to do with Altitude Sickness.

Ami, great travelogue with lots of suspense.AMS at Jispa will be a psychological blow and i too felt slight dizziness at Jispa.But amazingly from next day onwards i was pretty perfect through all those mighty passes.Hope you don't mind me sharing the same shots from different camera taken in Aug 5th 2009.

AMS, Acute Mountain Sickness is the body's reaction to a lower levels of oxygen, caused by ascent at a pace which is faster than acclimatisation.

Am sure you meant AMC !

Day 6

Surprisingly I started regretting my decision almost right away – the fresh air while riding back made me feel better – but I didn’t want to go back & do the same thing again. There was grim silence from both of us riding back – both crestfallen at the way things had turned out.

Rohtang was busier this time with horse riding going on. The weather ironically, had never been better with the sun shining brightly, lending a warm glow to the mountains. Mid way though, we started looking forward to riding to Srinagar & decided to stay on in Manali for a day or two before moving on for me to fully recover
