Thanks for that detailed report in the spread sheet. It will come in very useful for our drive next month.

Cheers,

Is it required for private cars?

Odd-

Yes, apparently, it is required. The person I bought it from was a guy put there by the government. I got a receipt for the amount. It did seem odd that Orissa would require a special permit but I noticed other private cars behind me were also being stopped and asked to pay. Hurricane type winds and rain were beginning to hit the open checkpost/shack, so I did the payment and got the hell out of there.

Perhaps someone else who knows about it should clarify.

There is another thread on the entry/exit tax at the Jaleswar border.

It seems that the tax collection is not legal if you are just passing through OR. But even I had to pay the tax. I did lodge a complaint online but don't think there was any update on it. At least it will be useful next month when I am driving to Bangalore, as the permit is valid for six months.

Wonderful trip and a very detailed log! It will surely be useful for other members.

In the excel sheet for the return trip, Kharagpur seems to be misplaced. It cannot be at 15km, and comes after Bagnan (which is appropriate at 52 km). Kharagpur is normally around 130 km from Kolkata.

I like the panoramic photos!

Aroop

Edited-

Thanks for the pointer.
I had forgotten to enter the Km reading for it on the left ( 107 ), I've edited it now.

entry/exit tax at the Jaleswar border

How much was the cost for vehicle permit? was it a flat rate for cars or it classified on CC/price?

I think the cost is based on the vehicle size/price. Expensive cars pay around Rs. 1200 while smaller cars pay around Rs. 800.

How is the road condition in Orissa? Is it really bad like Digha - Jaleswar (no roads for few kms with big sandy craters)?

Not bad-

The log reveals all. Other than the specific points in the log where I've mentioned bad roads, the roads in OR are the same as roads anywhere else, no issues. But whenever I say bad- they are really bad, unless you have high ground clearance, you will have issues..

If you are crossing OR-WB, try to do it before 19:00, else the pile up of trucks will delay you by 1-2 hours easily. Since the roads near the checkpost are thin, you cannot move unless you get down, stop the trucks and drive in the opposite lane.

Hi Friend,
It is great you had a wonderful journey in the safari. The wide angle photos are great. You could have included some more scenic and historical places photos, apart from the given ones. The sight seeing photos will be of great attraction.
