Road Trip from Chennai to Trivandrum
Start from Chennai (Tambaram) at 9 am and reached Samayapuram (outskirts of Tiruchi) at 1.30 PM. The roads are 4 lanes with median and in excellent condition throughout this stretch. There are 3 to 4 toll booths along the path. Visited the Samayapuram temple (the road off the highway to the temple is under construction and in a poor shape). From Samayapuram went to Tiruchi town for lunch. Started from Tiruchi at 3.45 pm and reached Madurai at 5.30 pm. One tip here – If the hotel is on the southern end of Madurai (near Rly Station or bus stand) it is better to enter Madurai from the last exit from the highway (instead of the first).
Went to Kodaikanal and returned the same night. On the Madurai – Dindigul highway, take the exit towards kodaikanal (comes before Dindigul) and reach the ghat road. Stopped at silver cascade for photos and some masala tea and headed to Kodaikanal.
Went around the Kodai lake, took photos of mist covering the lake and of my car on the lakefront. Visited the pine forests and quaker's walk and then headed back to Madurai.
Start from Madurai to Tiruchendur via Tirunelveli. Start from Madurai at 7 am and visit Tiruparankundram (on the way to Tirunelveli). Leave Tiruparankundram at 9 am and reach Tiruchendur at 1 pm. The drive from Tirunelveli to Tiruchendur is enjoyable – it is a two lane road, road is in good condition and traffic is very minimal – need to watch the speed when passing through some small town / village. Visit the temple and headed to Tirunelveli for lunch (all hotels around the temple at Tiruchendur were very crowded and hence headed for Tirunelveli). Reached Tirunelveli at 4.30 pm and had lunch at a hotel near vannarpet junction.
Headed from Tirunelveli to Trivandrum via Tenkasi, tenmalai. Started from tirunelveli at 5 pm and reached Trivandrum at 10.30 pm. The road condition is tolerable, but it is very isolated after Ariyan Kaavu. Since my uncle's family joined us from Madurai, there were two cars on the road and we drove one behind another throughout this stretch.
21, 22 and 23 Dec 2009
Visiting local relatives and temples. Visited the Padhmanabhaswamy temple early in the morning at 6.30am – rush was minimal.
Started from Trivandrum at 10 am. Heavy traffic on the Trivandrum – Nagercoil road, moreover the road is only 2 lanes, and has slow moving lorry traffic too. Reached Tirunelveli at 2 pm for lunch. Left Tirunelveli at 2.30 pm and reached Madurai at 5 pm. Had some refreshment at the BP Ghar Dhaba restaurant, and left for Chennai. Reached Chennai at 1.30 am (25 December early morning).
