Thank you guys for the appreciation. The paintings were brilliant. The attention paid to even the minutest of details by the artists was simply amazing!! We inspected some of their work under a magnifying lens. There was not even a single mistake!!!

@Advait, we heard about this school from the guide. We always wanted to visit one to learn about their techniques. Using solid gold and silver for painting was something unheard of!

Thanks Laluks. This is one area which is not mentioned in any of the travelogues.

It was a truly wonderful feeling seeing Iqbal make paint from stones!!!

Default The wonderful City Palace....

We reached Udaipur city after visiting the art school, by 3.30 pm. We were in a hurry as we knew that the city palace would close by 4.30 pm. We were appalled seeing the condition of the city streets. The road was very narrow and I had a terrible time driving there. There was hardly enough space for a rickshaw to go and in that, two MUVs were squeezing past!!! One false move and you are sure to scrape your precious vehicle. I was very unhappy that I put Chevy in such a messy road. The traffic was becoming worse because of the suicidal two wheeler riders.

We finally managed to reach City Palace after losing our way twice. Once we had to take reverse in the middle of the road and it was an embarrassing affair. There were absolutely no sign boards to lead us to the palace and we had to stop at every turn to enquire, inviting the wrath of motorists following us. We finally crossed the main entrance of City Palace by 4.15 pm, just in time to buy tickets.

The tickets to City palace was priced at Rs. 50 per head and Rs. 50 for our car. Reasonable, right??? No! Not at all!!! Their trump card is the charge they levy for taking cameras inside. A whopping Rs. 200 for anything with lens! Mobile phones included!!!!

I was shocked when I heard this from my wifey. But what to do! We did not drive 1000 kilometres to go back without photos of the City Palace!!! :-(

We grudgingly accepted this daylight robbery and went inside the gates. The first sight that struck me was how the doors were reinforced with sharp daggers! Does anyone know the reason for this??? It is to prevent the elephants of the enemies breaking open the door, with their heads or bodies! One look at the daggers and the mahout wouldn’t even think of taking his elephant anywhere near the door! A very ingenious idea!!!

We soon drove our Chevy inside the palace premises. The parking lot was overflowing with tourist taxis. But we somehow managed to find a good spot for Chevy. We were wonderstruck by the grandeur of the City palace. It was truly a beautiful work of architecture. This was one palace fit for the Kings in every sense!

Did you buy any painting or no ??

The best appreciation an artist gets is when some one buys his work of art. It is like serving the food to the hungry and needy.

Default The tour of City Palace...

When we started our tour of the palace, we were mobbed by three authorized guides from the palace. But we decided to ignore them and went ahead with our plan of enjoying the exhibits in peace.

The Armoury section was the first. I was thrilled to see the exhibits. But I must say that we were thoroughly disappointed by the lighting inside. It was very very dark inside the hall, with only some tube lights to provide illumination. It was a photographer’s nightmare!!! I had to increase the ISO to capture these images. Some of the exhibits were kept in complete darkness and some were in glass cages. So flash photography was out of the question. Still I managed to capture some images.

It was frustrating to see how badly they were treating the customers who paid Rs. 200 to take photos. For us, City Palace was absolutely the worst photography experience of the whole trip! They should have used spot lights to illuminate the exhibits and since they used tube lights, the whole area had intense shadows and I was left cursing my luck!

On an average day the City Palace has at least 10,000 visitors. And the average income will be a few crores. If they had used at least a fraction of the income on installing new lights, we would have been happy! But they are simply interested in making money through daylight robbery . My advice to anyone visiting Udaipur, think twice before paying for your camera!!!

Here are some photos from the first part of the Palace. All photos are named accordingly and are self-explanatory.

Default An evening at Fateh Sagar!

We exited the Palace gates by 6pm. It was getting dark and we were confused as to where to go, to spend the rest of the evening. After some debate, we decided to go to Bagore Ki Haveli and see the Pichola and the Lake Palace from the ghat there. It was just five minutes away from the palace and we reached the Haveli area after a short drive through the congested streets. Since Bagore ki Haveli was already closed for the day, we went to the ghat. But we were utterly disappointed to see the area near the bathing and washing ghat. It was very very dirty and we beat a hasty retreat.

We then decided to go to Fateh Sagar Lake and try to capture the sunset at the lake. We reached the lake by 6.20 pm. But we were disappointed seeing that the sky was very cloudy and we missed the sunset again. Soon it became freezing cold by the lakeside and we enjoyed spending time there, munching ice creams.

We returned back to our hotel at 7.30 pm. We were very tired after walking a few kilometres inside the two palaces and decided to have dinner early and retire for the night early. We parked our Chevy near our hotel and decided to walk to a restaurant at Surajpole junction.

We found a good restaurant by 7.45pm and had a tasty Indian dinner. We returned back to our hotel by 8.45 pm and again went back to the junction to have our beloved ice creams. We had a couple of cornettos each and finally returned back to our hotel by 9.30 pm.

We were very happy that the day was well spent and we had learnt a lot about art and architecture! We finally retired for the night by 10 pm and had a peaceful sleep.
