Sunday 20th December 2009

We're in Frankfurt. All has gone well, immigration almost smiled -- bags are on the belt -- everything is perfect.

Happy smiles are waiting for us in the waiting area. We're here.

Wow it is really snowing heavily I say, peering out of the airport glass panes.
Ja! I'm making full use of the 4 wheel drive says a beaming brother-in-law.

He's another Petrolhead. Loves his cars and always has plenty.

The parking lot is not heated and the cold stings, coming out from the nicely warmed Fraport. We put our bags into the spacious Mitsubishi Pajero and drive out of the parking lot.

This drive is going to take MUCH longer than usual he adds, grinning.

Holy Crap!

Off the highway soon enough and we're in lovely Bad Nauheim again.

As I said, everything went well. Kuwait Airways handled our baggage perfectly and it reached at the right place and the right time.

30 kilos each. Unlike both Lufthansa and Air India that are sticklers for 20 kilos and try and charge you for every extra kilo. It is really stressful to fly with only 20 kilos, especially if you're bringing back food and books from Germany, lol.

Do you need chains on the tyres for that type of snow? Do they use snow tyres as well.

What speeds are you doing on motorways?

Sam bhai, let it come fast.

About flying with Kuwait or any other airline based in the Middle East, there is an opinion that they are safer compared to the airlines from Western world. Especially from t********s!

Yes, it is important to use Winter Tyres and almost everybody changes for the season.

However those with 4X4 vehicles do not change their tyres. Motorway speeds are around 40-60 kmph unless visibility and driving conditions get very poor.

No - one does not use snow chains in the city and the motorways, only for hill climbing in heavy snow.

However do not be fooled, this is drifter's paradise, lol. Slipping and sliding ALL over the place. Amazing if you've never seen this before.

Back to my story:

-------------------------------------

We drive though Bad Nauheim, I am truly amazed. It isn't the snow, just the the snow but the fact that I've never really seen a city snowed over. And to think the last time I was here, it was in the peak of summer. So to speak, lol.

A warm welcome in a freezing land. I am so happy to be inside the warm house. I peep out at the kid's play area.

YetiBlog® - Snow, Germany and a Rather Blocked Nose-dsc_4112_l.jpg

Unbelievable. It has only started snowing and it looks like this. I think back to my last time here in April.
YetiBlog® - Snow, Germany and a Rather Blocked Nose-1_l.jpg

How things have changed. The kids are playing while the others try to clean up the entrance to their home.
I stare in shock.
YetiBlog® - Snow, Germany and a Rather Blocked Nose-dsc_4113blur_l.jpg

Why is this lady trying to clean up the snow outside her house when it is still snowing heavily. These Germans are crazy.
While we laugh, I am also given to understand one important fact.

It is your own responsibility to provide safe access to enter your house. If you have water, dirt or snow outside your door and it causes a danger to someone visiting you, they can sue.
So basically the Postman can sue you for not cleaning the snow outside your door?

These Germans are crazy, lol.

We goof around all day and play.
YetiBlog® - Snow, Germany and a Rather Blocked Nose-dsc_4119blur_l.jpg

It doesn't feel that cold and there is a logic to it. I am going to devote a whole post to that.

Today is the last Advents Sunday and the girls set up the house ready for X'mas while we do, uh, other things.

I wish we had similar law in here, especially for the places in and around these shops, stores and hotels.

I've had a fitful night. I am not sure what it is - sleeping with the heater on, or new bed or just the general excitement, I simply have not slept well.

It has snowed all night. I wouldn't have thought it possible but everything is a lot whiter than it was yesterday. The temperature is rising steadily, it has climbed up to minus 10 now.

Just saying Minus 10 is enough to send a shiver through your spine. Try it.

And to think we had a warm and wonderful 33 in sunny mumbai! I exclaim dramatically to the rather amused family.
I miss the sun. It is morning and it looks uhmm dusky and cloudy.

Take a photo of me in the garden!

I reach for the snow and try to make a snowball. PFFFF.

Huh? What the? It turned into powder? What's going on?

TheOne® laughs and runs over huddling. She hates the cold.
You CAAN'T make snowballs!
Why?
It's too COLD!!
She laughs again.

You can't pack the snow. It has to be like 0 or minus 2 then you can melt the snow and pack it into a ball. In this weather you can't make a snowball or a schneemann or anything

A what?
Schneemann. Do you say - Snowman?
She is giggling at my face, all wondrous.

Ahh. It is too cold to make a snowball. I shake my head.

Too cold to make a snowball. Whatever next?

LOL - my favorite nightmare during connections on all "unknown" Airlines! Though the only time my bags were ever left behind was at Heathrow when I had a five hour layover on British Airways!!!

Keep 'em coming, Sam! So far so good!

I've witnessed snowfall for the first time in my life so far only a week ago. But yesterday, Washington DC got the highest snowfall in 100 years---nearly 24 inches, per news reports.

I took a leisurely walk this evening, only to find mounds of snow all around, making it difficult to discern where the sidewalk ends and the road begins.

The streets were deserted, except for a handful of SUVs moving at snail's pace, and drifting on and off. I could walk in the middle of K Street aaram se--considered the busiest in DC.

Here's what the White House looked like an hour ago :

Yeti saab,

Lovely log - I was expecting high drama at Kuwait but tchhah. Just wanted to clarify a few things:
a. Kuwait Airways normally flies a rickety ancient A310 out of Delhi. Safe yes, but banned in Europe for example - they're predominantly an Airbus fleet. You got a 747/777 that day?
b. Most smart hub carriers will prioritize baggage for through checked in passengers, including loading it in particular bays. So on a decent day - your baggage would reach first!
c. Sorry to say, but Kuwait airways' vegetarian food is horrible. They're probably the only airline out of Delhi which take three veg meals for a flight of 200 pax! Their biz class meal was the shittiest biz class meal I've tasted!
d. I'm surprised as perceptive as you are - you didn't contrast the DEL-KWI and KWI-FRA flight more! I found the Cairo flight to be newer (A340), less snootier attendants, and hardly any labor (unlike the 90% labor from Delhi).
e. As they fly labor junta predominantly, you can get away with murder when it comes to checked in luggage. I remember seeing 2 folks - each not able to read/write english, had over 40 kg in "502 pataka beedi" type bags - and not pay a paisa extra
f. And mind you, they are safe. No fatalities till date!
