Well, I never planned for things to go out of control. They just happened & I would attribute all of it to lack of proper planning from my side. But yes, I fully agree with "MX6" - the kind of adrenalin rush that I experienced during this drive was unparalleled to anything else that I have done till date. I really feel like "Been there Done that" and have emerged a better driver. I feel bonded to my Punto (People who have seen Avatar can relate to this "bonding"). I know what it is capable of doing & what it is not meant to do.
Well, its not an SUV so it possibly can't take any road that it is challenged with. However, the worst roads on earth cannot deter a Punto given that the GC is kind of ok. This car is one solidly built car.

I shall try to complete the return journey soon with lot more pictures. Till then . . . Happy Driving
That's the SPIRIT! May the force be with you (and your wife as well)!

Re: A lengthy long drive in our Punto - Bangalore > Rourkela > Kolkata > Puri > Banga

Hi Kaustav,

A fellow bong I guess. Nice write up. Although Sukma was quite scary. As I was planning on a similar trip (bangalore - kolkata - chandannagar) with my 'would be' next year, bumped into your thread loved it! Why don’t you complete the write up with rest of the pictures would be great.

Cheers

Re: A lengthy long drive in our Punto - Bangalore > Rourkela > Kolkata > Puri > Banga

You did good. You took a nonconventional route (albeit thanks to Yahoo Maps) but you did really good, showed presence of mind and completed the journey. That is what matters. Agreed that preparations must be done thoroughly but one cannot prepare for bad luck. So, when it happens do what you can and this is exactly what you did. Many of us would have lost it in such a situation.

My hometown is Bhawanipatna, which you crossed, and I can safely say that past Nabarangpur till Rourkela the roads are okay okay type but not unsafe.

In your second leg also you covered some Maoist infested areas of Jharkhand. So, please go ahead and tell us about the roads from Rourkela to Ranchi and then Kolkata.

You are the new Maoist specialist of T-bhp.

Re: A lengthy long drive in our Punto - Bangalore > Rourkela > Kolkata > Puri > Bangalore

How is the condition of road from Kolkata to Diamond Harbour now? I suppose the distance is only around 50 kms and an afternoon visit is possible. Can anybody guide me? Or is there any further place one can visit from there taking the full-length of the day?

Vipin.

Planning to do Bangalore-Rourkela this year. Also planned for Rourkela- Kolkatta. Any tips on the recent road conditions especially after the monsoons.
