Day 4

The maps for day 5. > DWARKA > JAMNAGAR > MANDVI
Coastal Gujarat and the Great Rann of Kutch-scan0005.jpg

Coastal Gujarat and the Great Rann of Kutch-scan0006.jpg

We leave from Dwarka for via Jamnagar for Mandvi where we stopped for the night.
We stop by the road just after crossing a small bridge about 100 meters long. There is a small pond and there’s a whole bird fest going on.

Towards Jamnagar

Coastal Gujarat and the Great Rann of Kutch-dsc_1164.jpg

Enroute to Jamnagar we turn right to Narada marine national park. We arrive to find no one there. The office is shut and the guard tells us to get permission from Jamnagar. So we say OK TATA BYE BYE, as I wonder, if this was somewhere in Europe or the western world, they would have fully well developed facilities in such places to promote nature tourism. Sadly, I remind myself that im in India... and here, the wheel does not turn till the politician does not see vested interest in it.
Lots of bird sightings since this place runs along Khijadia bird sanctuary.

We pass Jamnagar and pass a huge Reliance retail where we stock up with some more supplies and then head out towards Mandvi. The road to Mandvi too is beautiful, though under construction in some places, but nothing too bad.

We reached Mandvi at 9pm. The town was almost asleep. We enquired a bit and out of the options spread around town, we found ourselves at Hotel Mandvi. Quite a shady looking place. No grills on any windows and we were on the first floor where you could jump to the ground floor and vice versa. The owner/manager, a young boy proudly said, “yahan chori nahin hoti”. They also did not have a tradition of giving receipts. Anyways, we went off to sleep with windows and balcony door ajar. The room was quiet stuffy to turn on the ac and the cool breeze put us off to sleep in a few mins. God’s watching us and the car... áur yahaan chori nahin hoti’!!

We were out of the hotel at 7am. The town was just about waking up.
A few sights around the town.

The shipyards are just off the road. A wonderful sight. A work of art, and a tradition being carried down from centuries. Maybe someday when I get the opportunity to visit again, I shall go inside and find out exactly how they go about building these fascinating ships in wood.

We then headed to Mandvi palace. Undoubtedly one of the best ive seen. Apparently, some songs of HDDCS(damn.. hum dil de chuke sanam) were shot here. There is a huge plantation and a garden inside. It also has an entrance to a private beach, which we did not visit but im sure mustve been superb. A very very quiet and beautiful place where we spent almost 3 hours... and time just flew. Its a must see for anyone going to Mandvi.

Entrance to the property.

The entrance to the palace. One leaves their vehicle here and proceeds to the palace via the royal garden on foot. A small fee for entry and camera is to be paid at the office.

Views Of The Palace

Its less of a palace and more like a kings, palatial farmhouse. Very beautiful nevertheless. The entire place is very well maintained in a ready to use state for the Raja who occasionally visits.

Dear Jaysmokeleaves- Please accept my congratulations for the awesome pictures. Very well shot. You seriously could take for professional photography. I would certainly rate this thread 5 star for detailing and quality of photos.
Infact the snap on Pg 1 showing the traffic jam reminded me of last month when i had visited Poush Dhabha ahead of Dahisar. Got stuck in the jam and they car simply begged to run. She was an Ikon 1.6.

Mandvi palace to Narayan sarovar & Koteshwar. The road has very sparse traffic. No puncture shops and no food dhabas either. The drive is very sedate and pleasant. The road has sudden dips/drops which can cause a vehicle to take off and crash land. We almost crashlanded once and were very careful thereafter.

It was lunch time and we were getting very hungry and there were no dhabas in sight. So we spotted this one lone shaded tree after a long search and stopped for lunch. Noodles, eggs and MTR food.

Narayan Sarovar. The temple was closed since Lord Narayan sleeps in the afternoon. So we went ahead to Koteshwar and returned later to see the Narayan temple. The Sarovar is DIRTY. The water is green... but I guess it might be cleaner than the Yamuna river.
